Apart from the Symphony no.3, ‘Collages’, none of Gerhard’s electronic music is published. This paper will discuss aspects of Gerhard’s electronic music, focusing on Audiomobiles (1958-59) and Sculptures (1963)
The political meaning of informal urbanization
No full textMany countries in the Global South are relatively young democracies. The resilience and legitimacy of their political systems rely largely on their ability to integrate and represent millions of citizens who are ‘excluded’ from formal social, political, and economic structures. Exclusion from those formal structures has deep-reaching consequences and is reflected in the built environment, as many of the so-called excluded are also excluded from formal housing markets and must ‘help themselves’ in order to inhabit the city. They often build informal settlements, mostly characterized by insecurity of tenure, poor infrastructure, and lack of basic services, though in time, and mostly through public intervention, some of those neighborhoods might develop into liveable places. We argue that democracy’s success depends not only on the ability of formal institutions to respond to the legitimate demands of its citizens. It also depends on how these citizens are able to enter the political realm in order to claim their rights. The toils of people struggling to inhabit the city have different consequences for their empowerment as citizens in different contexts. In this sense, informal urbanization is often a short-term, last-resort solution for the lack of affordable housing in developing countries, and it is simultaneously the mark of non-inclusive political systems and of a deficit of rights.Accepted Author ManuscriptSpatial Planning and StrategyDesign and Politic
Teaching spatial justice: Four exercises on communicative rationality & justice
No full textThis chapter investigates why a focus on justice should be included in planning and design education. The central argument, based on the ideas of moral philosopher Alasdair McIntyre, is that justice is a 'internal and necessary good' for the successful practise of spatial planning, without which it is meaningless. It contends that spatial planning can be publicly justified only if it produces (perceived) just outcomes using (perceived) just procedures. It challenges the notion that justice is solely a subjective feeling, arguing that various justice claims must be resolved through public communicative exercises, of which spatial planning is but one manifestation. Although competing justice claims are frequently legitimate in and of themselves, they must be contrasted and evaluated against each other in context in order for justice claims to be appraised and some sort of agreed justice to be reached, albeit in imperfect ways, to ensure policy legitimacy, sustainability, and adherence. This chapter suggests four exercises to address communicative rationality and competing justice claims in the classroom, inviting students to argue their way through those claims from a variety of different perspectives.Spatial Planning and Strateg
Roberto Gerhard’s Sound Compositions: A Historical-Philological Perspective. Archive, Process, Intent and reenactment
No full textThis research advances the current state of knowledge in the field of early tape music both empirically and methodologically. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact that the electronic medium exerted in the musical thinking of Roberto Gerhard, one of the most outspoken, prolific and influential composers in the Spanish diaspora whose musical legacy, for the most part unknown, is a major landmark in the early history of electroacoustic music. Gerhard’s personal tape collection, one of the largest historical archives of its kind reported in the literature, is exceptional for both its antiquity (50+-year-old tapes) and its abundance of production materials. Through the digitisation and analysis of the composer’s tape collection this research argues that the empirical study of audio documents sets out a basis for a broader understanding of textual processes. More specifically, the research demonstrates that the reconstruction of works based on magnetic tape sketches is a powerful method to advance the understanding of early tape music. This research also examines Gerhard’s sound compositions in relation to the post-war context in which they were composed. Finally, this research presents performance documentation that proposes an approach to the electroacoustic music repertoire in which creativity is not at odds with rigor and critical discernment demonstrating that archival study can be closely aligned to the concept of re-enactment

No full textThis chapter seeks to describe the concept of spatial justice and to unpack its implications for spatial planning and the role of planners. It addresses spatial justice as a crucial dimension of sustainability, especially of social sustainability. It argues that justice buttresses public reasoning and public justification and therefore reinforces the social and political structures and institutions that allow for sustainability to exist. It argues that spatial planning is one of those socio-political institutions buttressing sustainability. It argues, furthermore, that Justice is a good “internal and necessary for the successful realisation” of spatial planning, without which it is meaningless.
