Reshaping the border. Informal zones of concentration as a ground for migrants’ agency.
No full textThe paper is aimed at discussing informal zones of concentration - those spaces where forced migrants gather in transit countries waiting to trespass the border and continue their journey - as sites where sheer survival becomes the ground for migrant’s political claims and incorporation in local societies.
These zones lack physical barriers, official recognition and control but are generated as direct effect of border management policies (Sciurba, 2009) and depend on the same principle at the basis of camps and detention centers. Here, arbitrariness of rules and institutional procedures confronts migrants’ tactics of resistance, in a tacitly recognized mutual misunderstanding that generates self-organized ’gray spaces’ (Yiftachel, 2009).
The self-organized space plays a key role in border conflicts of transit migrants as alternative to institutional spaces, where the taking in charge of migrants does not correspond to a real possibility for them of accessing territory and rights connected to it.
The settlement in hidden places is the spatial component of a broader strategy of intentional invisibilization (Marconi, 2010) and of other strategies of existence that migrants adopt, being in constant fear of violence, internment and deportation; this condition disarticulate and deterritorialize aspects of citizenship (Syrri, 2012), and can enable the emergence of migrants’ political agency, escaping dominant narratives of criminalization and victimization.
Moving from the idea of autonomy of migration as social and political movement (Papadopoulos and Tsianos, 2008), the paper argues that the negotiation of gray spaces at the border reshapes power relations and creates a margin where migrant flows can challenge the liberal notion of citizenship and access political membership

No full textThis essay is an introduction to three archival documents relating to as many naval operations of the Italian Royal Navy at the beginning of the Second World War. In details, the present study aims to historically and critically frame three missions accomplished by Italian submarines Mocenigo, Micca and Argo in the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean during the last five months of 1940. For this purpose, the study firstly provides an overall picture of the Italian submarine operations in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic war theatres throughout 1940. Then, it focuses on the three said missions, attempting to analyse them in the light of the information provided by the previous historical overview. No full textShanghai è oggetto di una letteratura che può dirsi classica. I contributi che la riguardano, infatti, sono piuttosto numerosi, considerando che la medesima città è stata analizzata da molti studiosi sotto svariati punti di vista. Cionondimeno, molti temi meritano ancora di essere debitamente approfonditi. Questo libro intende affrontare proprio una delle questioni ancora aperte rispetto al passato di Shanghai: il ruolo degli stranieri nello sviluppo socioeconomico della città tra la seconda metà dell’Ottocento e la prima del Novecento. Per questa ragione, l’insediamento internazionale, ossia il più grande spazio coloniale mai esistito a Shanghai, è qui adottato come punto di osservazione privilegiato, con l’intento di condurre un’analisi che mescoli storia, economia e sociologia. Nella cornice appena descritta, la trattazione si dipana in un discorso che, partendo da una disamina dei porti di trattato in Cina, si addentra nel passato precoloniale e coloniale di Shanghai, con l’obiettivo di scoprire in che modo le istituzioni dell’insediamento internazionale contribuirono al successo economico e non solo di Shanghai fino alle prime decadi del secolo scorso

No full textShanghai has experienced several political and social crises throughout history. This paper aims to reconstruct fully one of the most disruptive of these occurrences: an undeclared war – known as the Shanghai incident – fought by Japanese and Chinese armies over five weeks (28th January – 4th March 1932). In particular, the essay intends to address this matter from a military point of view and therefore tries to retrace all the events of the war carefully (from the initial pretext to the final armistice) and to identify accurately the actual causes and ultimate outcomes of the conflict. Moreover, in the interests of completeness in adding new information, the study considers a broad series of Italian archival documents neglected by the scientific literature
