L’influsso dell’arabo sulle varietà di turco-ottomano parlate un tempo nel Nordafrica
The recent editions by L. Rocchi of Pietro Ferraguto’s and Arcangelo Carradori’s Turkish dictionaries from the 17th century ‒ the former based on Tunisian sources, the latter on Egyptian sources ‒
have cast new light on varieties of Ottoman-Turkish once spoken in North Africa and very little known so far. The paper examines some phonetic, morphological, syntactical and lexical features of Arabic origin that are found in the material of these lexicons and document a kind of Turkish peculiar to arabophone areas

Memories. On the westward journey of Chinese migrants from Zhejiang to Europe in the 1920s
This is the main essay in a book that resulted from a collaboration with the artists Ciaj Rocchi and Matteo Demonte, with whom the author has participated to a call for projects promoted by the University of Padua and the Royal Holloway University of London. Our project, entitled "Pearls from China", won a grant to carry out research on the early years of the Chinese migration from Zhejiang to Europe, which was started by itinerant peddlers of fake pearls who travelled to Germany, France, Spain and Italy in 1925-1926. Many of them had actually migrated from China to Japan a few years earlier, as we were able to show thanks to records found in Japanese, Chinese and European archives, as well as documentation and oral testimonies gathered among the descendants of the earliest Chinese migrants to Italy. The book is thus an innovative mixture between an academic essay, written by the author and a graphic essay, illustrated by the splendid artwork of Rocchi and Demonte. The early mobilities of Zhejiang migrants across Eurasia have been documented graphically by sourcing contemporary maps and illustrations, which have been the prime source materials for the volume's artwork
A Historical-Etymological Dictionary of Turkisms in Albanian (1555-1954)
In contrast to previous monographs on Turkish elements in Albanian, the present work by Bufli and Rocchi has the express aim of giving historical depth to all the Albanian Turkisms attested in written (especially lexicographical) sources in the four centuries between 1555 (publication of Gjon Buzuku’s Meshari) and 1954 (publication of the first monolingual standard Albanian dictionary). Every entry in our dictionary comprises all the documented variations, if any, of its headword, and each form is provided with the date and source of its first occurrence. This establishes a precise chronological stratification of the Albanian lexicon of Turkish origin, which to date has not been available. In addition, we have also paid special attention to the etymology and dating of the Turkish words from which the Albanian loans are derived. We, therefore, consider that this study may be a helpful resource both for Albanologists and Turkologists
Arcangelo Carradori from Pistoia, a Franciscan Friar, carried out a missionary work in Egypt between 1630 and 1637 and, after returning to Italy, waited for the preparation of an Italian-Turkish and Italian-Nubian dictionary, both contained in a manuscript kept in Forteguerriana Library of Pistoia and dated 1650. While the part concerning the Nubian was subject to various studies, the Turkish had remained unpublished so far. This work by L. Rocchi aims to fill this gap by providing scholars with a richly scientific and richly commented edition of this part, which is very broad (includes 269 cards written on the recto and verse) and of great interest. Indeed, while many of the limbs are covered by the Carradors by "Dittionario italiano-turchesco" di Giovanni Molino (Rome 1641), there is also a very large number of sources for us unknown, supposedly constituted largely by Egyptian informants, with distinctive phonetic and morphosyntactic characteristics. It is therefore certain that the Carradorian dictionary will occupy a prominent place among the 'Transkriptionstexte' and it will become an important reference text for anyone interested in Turkish XVII century and Ottoman historical lexicography.
Identification of distinct characteristics of postural sway in Parkinson's disease: a feature selection procedure based on principal component analysis.
We selected descriptive measures of the centre of pressure (CoP) displacement in quiet standing, by means of a procedure based on principal component analysis, in two groups particularly different in terms of postural behaviours, such as subjects with Parkinson's disease (PD) in the levodopa off and on states. We computed 14 measures of the CoP: 5 measures of CoP trajectory over the support surface, 3 measures that estimated the area covered by the CoP, 1 measure that estimated the principal CoP sway direction, 1 measure that quantified the CoP total power, 1 measure that estimated the variability of CoP frequency content and 3 measures of characteristic CoP frequencies [L. Rocchi, L. Chiari, A. Cappello, Feature selection of stabilometric parameters based on principal component analysis, Med. Biol. Eng. Comput. 42 (2004) 71-79; L. Rocchi, L. Chiari, F.B. Horak, Effects of deep brain stimulation and levodopa on postural sway in Parkinson's disease, J. Neurol. Neurosurg. Psychiatry, 73 (2002) 267-274]. The feature selection, independently applied to the measures obtained in the two groups, resulted in different principal component (PC) subspaces of the 14-dimension original data set (4 PCs in the off and 3 PCs in the on state to account for over 90% of the original variance), but in the same 5 CoP measures (selected features) needed to describe the different postural behaviours: root mean square distance; mean velocity; principal sway direction; centroidal frequency of the power spectrum; frequency dispersion. The five selected features were found to provide insight into the postural control mechanisms and to describe changes in postural strategies in the two groups of PD subjects, off and on levodopa. Thus, the five selected features may be recommended for use in clinical practice and in research, in the direction toward the definition of a standard protocol in quantitative posturography
Herophydrus reticulatus Pederzani & Rocchi 2009
Herophydrus reticulatus Pederzani & Rocchi, 2009 Herophydrus reticulatus Pederzani & Rocchi, 2009: 84 was transferred to genus Hygrotus subgenus Hygrotus (s. str.) by Villastrigo et al. (2017b). Thus, this name became a junior secondary homonym of Hygrotus (s. str.) reticulatus (Fabricius, 1792: 200) which was originally published in the binomen Dytiscus reticulatus and is accepted since long as subjective junior synonym of Hygrotus (s. str.) versicolor (Schaller, 1783). Since no synonym of reticulatus Pederzani & Rocchi exists, the name must be substituted by a new replacement name. This is why I hereby substitute the invalid name Hygrotus (s. str.) reticulatus (Pederzani & Rocchi, 2009) by the new replacement name Hygrotus (s. str.) laticollis nom. nov. The new specific name is an adjective in the nominative singular and relates to the broad pronotum of the species. Notes: Thanks are due to the authors of Herophydrus reticulatus, Fernando Pederzani (Ravenna, Italy) and Saverio Rocchi (Florence, Italy), for agreeing in the substitution name being published herePublished as part of Fery, Hans, 2017, Substitution of some species-level names in the tribe Hygrotini Portevin, 1929 (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae: Hydroporinae), pp. 425-427 in Zootaxa 4341 (3) on page 426, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.4341.3.8, http://zenodo.org/record/104010
