The paper examines some phonetic, morphological, syntactical and lexical features of Arabic origin that are found in the material of these lexicons and document a kind of Turkish peculiar to arabophone areas

No full textArcangelo Carradori, nativo di Pistoia, fu un missionario francescano, che, dopo un lungo soggior-no in Egitto, al suo ritorno in Italia redasse un manoscritto, datato 1650, contenente due repertori lessicali, uno italo-turco e uno italo-nubiano. Il primo dei due è stato reso accessibile agli studiosi solo ultimamente in virtù dell’ed. Rocchi (2011). Si tratta di un dizionario di mole ingente, che occupa ben 269 carte (538 pagine) del manoscritto, per un ragguardevole totale di circa 16000 lemmi. Nel presente articolo si prendono in esame i vocaboli italiani più interessanti registrati dal Carradori, sia per non risultare documentati altrove e costituire quindi degli hapax, sia per consentire di retrodatarli rispetto alle informazioni fornite dagli usuali repertori storico-lessicografici di riferimento (abbiamo però dato conto di eventuali attestazioni precedenti rintracciate in base alle nostre ricerche), sia per presentare significati particolari che sembrano ignorati dalle altre fonti

Il dizionario turco-ottomano di Arcangelo Carradori (1650)
No full textArcangelo Carradori from Pistoia, a Franciscan Friar, carried out a missionary work in Egypt between 1630 and 1637 and, after returning to Italy, waited for the preparation of an Italian-Turkish and Italian-Nubian dictionary, both contained in a manuscript kept in Forteguerriana Library of Pistoia and dated 1650. While the part concerning the Nubian was subject to various studies, the Turkish had remained unpublished so far. This work by L. Rocchi aims to fill this gap by providing scholars with a richly scientific and richly commented edition of this part, which is very broad (includes 269 cards written on the recto and verse) and of great interest. Indeed, while many of the limbs are covered by the Carradors by "Dittionario italiano-turchesco" di Giovanni Molino (Rome 1641), there is also a very large number of sources for us unknown, supposedly constituted largely by Egyptian informants, with distinctive phonetic and morphosyntactic characteristics. It is therefore certain that the Carradorian dictionary will occupy a prominent place among the 'Transkriptionstexte' and it will become an important reference text for anyone interested in Turkish XVII century and Ottoman historical lexicography.Arcangelo Carradori da Pistoia, frate francescano, svolse opera missionaria in Egitto tra il 1630 e il 1637 e, una volta rientrato in Italia, attese alla redazione di un dizionario italo-turco e di uno italo-nubiano, entrambi contenuti in un manoscritto conservato alla Biblioteca Forteguerriana di Pistoia e datato 1650. Mentre la parte concernente il nubiano è stata oggetto di vari studi, quella turca era rimasta finora inedita. Il presente lavoro di L. Rocchi si propone di colmare questa lacuna fornendo agli studiosi un'edizione scientifica e riccamente commentata di questa parte, che è molto ampia (comprende 269 carte, scritte sul recto e sul verso) e di grande interesse. Infatti, se è vero che molti lemmi il Carradori li ricopia dal "Dittionario italiano-turchesco" di Giovanni Molino (Roma 1641), ce n'è pure un numero assai elevato tratto da fonti per noi sconosciute, presumibilmente costituite in buona parte da informatori egiziani, con caratteristiche fonetiche e morfosintattiche del tutto peculiari. È perciò certo che il dizionario carradoriano va ad occupare un posto di primo piano fra i 'Transkriptionstexte' e diventerà un importante testo di consultazione per chiunque si interessi del turco del XVII secolo e di lessicografia storica ottomana

Memories. On the westward journey of Chinese migrants from Zhejiang to Europe in the 1920s
No full textThis is the main essay in a book that resulted from a collaboration with the artists Ciaj Rocchi and Matteo Demonte, with whom the author has participated to a call for projects promoted by the University of Padua and the Royal Holloway University of London. Our project, entitled "Pearls from China", won a grant to carry out research on the early years of the Chinese migration from Zhejiang to Europe, which was started by itinerant peddlers of fake pearls who travelled to Germany, France, Spain and Italy in 1925-1926. Many of them had actually migrated from China to Japan a few years earlier, as we were able to show thanks to records found in Japanese, Chinese and European archives, as well as documentation and oral testimonies gathered among the descendants of the earliest Chinese migrants to Italy. The book is thus an innovative mixture between an academic essay, written by the author and a graphic essay, illustrated by the splendid artwork of Rocchi and Demonte. The early mobilities of Zhejiang migrants across Eurasia have been documented graphically by sourcing contemporary maps and illustrations, which have been the prime source materials for the volume's artwork
A Historical-Etymological Dictionary of Turkisms in Albanian (1555-1954)
No full textIn contrast to previous monographs on Turkish elements in Albanian, the present work by Bufli and Rocchi has the express aim of giving historical depth to all the Albanian Turkisms attested in written (especially lexicographical) sources in the four centuries between 1555 (publication of Gjon Buzuku’s Meshari) and 1954 (publication of the first monolingual standard Albanian dictionary). Every entry in our dictionary comprises all the documented variations, if any, of its headword, and each form is provided with the date and source of its first occurrence. This establishes a precise chronological stratification of the Albanian lexicon of Turkish origin, which to date has not been available. In addition, we have also paid special attention to the etymology and dating of the Turkish words from which the Albanian loans are derived. We, therefore, consider that this study may be a helpful resource both for Albanologists and Turkologists
