This collection contains Arkansas-related materials collected by Ron Robinson. These
materials include restaurant menus, musical recordings and sheet music, matchbook covers,
political campaign hand-outs, postcards, and other postal items such as first-day covers of
stamps, postmarks from assorted Arkansas communities, and unique cachets (artwork
appearing on mailed envelopes). Audio/visual materials present a virtual history of the
recording industry, ranging from wax cylinders through 78 rpm and 80 rpm discs, 33 rpm
and 45 rpm vinyl discs, magnetic tapes on reels and on cassettes, VHS and Beta cassettes,
and compact discs.
Biographical Information/Historical Information
Ronald Allen "Ron" Robinson was born April 3, 1943, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to
Edgar Fulton "Putt" Robinson and Martha Corinna (nee Reid) Robinson. He attended and
graduated from Glencoe High School in Glencoe, Oklahoma, and then the University of
Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas. At the University of Arkansas, Ron earned a bachelor's
degree in journalism, graduating in 1965, and he also served as editor of the student
newspaper, the Arkansas Traveler. Orville Henry, sports editor of the Arkansas Gazette,
hired Robinson as a stringer to cover Razorback sports. Robinson later studied public
relations at Boston University Graduate School of Public Communications. In the late
1960s, Ron served in the United States Air Force, rising to the rank of captain. He was
awarded a Bronze Star for service in Vietnam and also received the Air Force
Commendation Medal for his support of the Apollo 11 mission to the moon in 1969.
While attending college in Fayetteville, Robinson served as an intern at CJRW--the largest
advertising agency in Arkansas, formed by Wayne Cranford, Jim Johnson, Shelby Woods,
and Wayne Woods. In 1970, Robinson joined the firm full-time and remained employed
there until his retirement in 1996. He became chairman and chief executive officer of the
firm. Following retirement, Ron remained "of council" to CJRW and, in 2009, was named
chairman emeritus of the firm.
In 1986, Robinson arranged for the writing and production of "Arkansas, You Run Deep in
Me," written and sung by Robinson's college roommate, Wayland Holyfield. The next year,
the state legislature named the song an official song of the state. In 1993, Robinson was
appointed to the United States Postal Service Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee, which
led to fifteen years of involvement in the creation and production of more than 1,750
postage stamp issues. He was named "Business Executive of the Year" by Arkansas
Business and received many other honors and awards for both professional work and
volunteer service. In 2014, the Central Arkansas Library System (CALS) dedicated a $10
million, 315-seat state-of-the-art theater in Little Rock's River Market, naming the venue
Ron Robinson Theater. In 2005, Robinson was honored as a "Distinguished Alumnus" of
the Fulbright College of Arkansas and Sciences of the University of Arkansas. A
scholarship bearing Robinson's name was established for journalism students at the
university.
Robinson was an avid collector of many kinds of items, particularly those with an Arkansas
connection. He amassed nearly 18,000 movie posters, as well as postage stamps, political
memorabilia, and other items. Robinson was a member of the Board of Directors of CALS'
Friends of the Library for three terms, provided pro bono consulting to the library system,
and contributed grants and memorials to CALS as well as material donations, such as 200
movie posters, hundreds of volumes for used book sales, and the items in this collection.
Ron Robinson married Bonnie Bumpers March 23, 1984. They have a son, Reid Robinson,
and two granddaughters. Ron died August 14, 2018. He is buried in Mount Holly Cemetery
in Little Rock. In 2022, the Forest Park Station Post Office on Kavanaugh Avenue in Little
Rock was renamed for Ron Robinson.

A Framework for Studying Organizational Innovation in Research Libraries
No full textThe objective of this paper is two-fold: to propose a theoretical framework and model for studying organizational innovation in research libraries and to set forth propositions that can provide directions for future empirical studies of innovation in research libraries. Research libraries can be considered members of a class of organizations referred to here as institutional nonprofits. As such, these organizations inherit many of the innovative properties that are associated with the broader sector of service organizations. However, institutional nonprofits have unique characteristics that distinguish them from other service organizations such as government agencies and for-profit service firms. In this paper, institutional theory is used to explain the forces that are acting on the research library. Research from organizational learning, structural contingency theory, and typologies of service organizations are used to establish a more encompassing innovation framework. Based on the literature review, the theoretical framework, and empirical studies, this paper presents a process model and propositions that characterize how the research library might innovate. Information Retrieval in Domain Specific Databases: An Analysis to Improve the User Interface of the Alcohol Studies Database
No full textAcademic libraries are becoming more directly involved in the design and publishing of electronic information resources, including bibliographic databases, electronic journals, and digital archives. As a result, librarians are dealing with many user interface design issues that computer scientists and information specialists in other fields have encountered. Transaction log analysis can provide a rich source of information on user behavior and insights as to how user interfaces can be improved. This article describes the methodology and results of the log analysis for the Alcohol Studies Database (ASDB), a domain-specific database supported by the Center of Alcohol Studies and Rutgers University Libraries (RUL). Unifying Frameworks for Library and Information Science: An Analysis of Three Perspectives
No full textThis article argues that there are emerging new roles for academic librarians and that a more focused discussion on the theoretical foundations of Library and Information Science (LIS) will provide guidance for both the discipline and the profession. The analysis herein examines a possible theoretical foundation or framework for LIS from three perspectives: the philosophy of information, social epistemology, and cybersemiotics. The primary advocates of these three perspectives are L. Floridi, J. Shera, and S. Brier respectively. This analysis addresses three questions: how does each perspective view LIS?, can the perspectives clarify the relationship between librarianship and information science, and can one of these perspectives suggest how the profession of academic librarianship should transform itself to meet the demands of the scholar in the 21st century? The analysis will proceed along four dimensions: a) knowledge and information, b) the focus on society and the individual, c) the meaning and structure of information, and d) how a unifying framework of LIS might deal with the practice of librarianship.Paper submitted for the course Communication, Information, and Media Processes (Professors Mokros, Kantor, and Pavlik), December 13, 2007

The capabilities and the limitations of the e-book and related technologies are therefore used in this paper to provide a framework for examining the implications of this technology on service in academic libraries.
