This thesis reports on the aspects of microsecond flash photolysis, from the construction and design of the apparatus to its application in two photochemical fields of interest aa-unsaturated nitro compounds and tryptophan degradation. The generation of 511s light pulses from a 200 Joule discharge source is described in detail. The optimisation of the lamp design is specifically considered within the given working parameters. A system for obtaining an improved signal to noise ratio is developed using a second synchronised pulsed source for the analysis of the transients.E-1-(9-phenanthryl)-2-nitroprop-l-ene on irradiation in solution undergoes isomerisation to the Z isomer. The Z isomer on photolysis behaves differently and yields 2-methylphenanthro-9,10-b furan and phenanthrene-9-aldehyde, via intermediate transients. Flash photolysis and low temperature NMR studies were used to demonstrate the presence and character of this transient. A probable structure for this transient is suggested.A model peptide, N-acetyl-tryptophan methyl amide was prepared to investigate photo-degradation of tryptophan amino acids. Evidence for the participation of singlet oxygen in the direct sensitisation by the model using the deuterium enhancement method of the singlet oxygen lifetime is presented.</p

Robin Baker was born to parents Doug and Patsy Baker in Phoenix, AZ, where he spent most of his youth. He graduated from Grand Canyon University in 1980 with honors in history and political science. His love of history led him to puruse a masters in history from Hardin-Simmons University and a doctorate in history from Texas A&M. He excelled in academics at all of these institutions, getting high honors. In 1999 Robin Baker came to George Fox University as the Provost. During his eight years as provost he oversaw the addition of 13 new undergraduate and 9 graduate programs. He is passionate about the globalization of education and helped institute the Act Six scholarship at George Fox. In addition to his work as provost Robin Baker has taught classes in history at the University. His research primarily focuses on American Civil War and Reconstruction, 19th-century American political/ quantitative history, and the history of the southern United States. He also takes a great interest in the works of C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. Robin Baker was sworn in as the twelfth President of George Fox University on March 6, 2008.https://digitalcommons.georgefox.edu/noteable_individuals/1063/thumbnail.jp

Imanta is a cultural support organization formed on March 8, 1947 in Edmonton, Alberta. Imanta was founded by Ted Baker and Latvian people previously established in Alberta. Ted Baker's wife Viola Baker, also supported Ted's belief in the value of a formal organization that would serve as a contact point for new Latvian immigrants. Imanta originally helped immigrants connect with other Latvians and settle in the province. Imanta has continued to remain a vital cultural part of Latvian society in Alberta. The Edmonton Latvian Society "Imanta" meets regularly, through many social and cultural gatherings and formal events. The Imanta resource network remains a vital part of Latvian society in Alberta today.Imanta 1.
