Paul Abbott & Alex Roberts: What Hat am I Wearing Today?:MOCA London, 3 - 23 September 2017
One of the two-person partnership and exhibiting artists for the duo-exhibition at MOCA London, Paul Abbott and Alex Roberts: What Hat am I Wearing Today? A multi-media installation exploring the non-stable identity-reality of living and working in the second decade of the 21st century."Abbott and Roberts have worked together before. They are interested in how the site-specificity affects their separate and joint work. They are interested in process and the formal aspects of their individual and joint media; from the play with paint (Roberts) to a way of framing with the camera (Abbott); looking at the edge of things; observation in all forms". Roberto Ekholm, Curator.Alex presented five paintings alongside Paul's series of videos to create their combined install amongst a linked armature of metal industrial tubings.MOCA London - Museum of Contemporary Art Project Space

Gamblin' Man
I am a rovin' gambler,
I gambled all around,
Wherever I meet with a deck of cards,
I lie my money down.
I gambled down in Washintin,
I hadn't been there many more weeks than three,
Till I fell in love with a pretty little girl.
And she fell in love with me.
She took me in her parlor,
And she cooled me with her fan,
She whispered low in her mothers ear,
I love this gamblin' man.
Oh dear mother oh dear mother
What makes you treat me so,
To leave your dear old mother,
And go with a gambler go.
Oh dear mother oh dear mother,
I'll tell you if I can,
The love I have for a gamblin' man
N o human's, tongue can tell.Funding for digitization provided by the Arkansas Humanities Council and the Happy Hollow Foundation

Walter Orr Roberts letters to UW President Raymond B. Allen concerning the firing of communist affiliated professors, March 4, 1949
Document related to the Canwell Committee hearings.
In this series of letters Walter Orr Roberts, Director of the High Altitude Observatory, corresponds with Raymond B. Allen, President of the University of Washington, concerning the dismissal of three professors due to their communist affiliations. Roberts writes “…I find myself in doubt, even after reading your statement thoroughly, as to whether all of the people in question have been protected by their stated right to hold their positions during ‘good behavior’ and ‘efficient and competent service’…In no way can I see that the charges brought against them have been discussed primarily in the light of the competence of these teachers to render efficient teaching to their students.” Roberts continues in another letter “…I wish to express my considerable distress at the action taken by the University of Washington to dismiss three faculty members because of their admitted or alleged membership in the Communist Party.” Allen responds to these letters by stating “…I am sending you a marked copy of the University of Washington Record for February, 1949, which contains a recent statement of mine to the faculty of the University of Washington, pointing out the error in some of the reports of the situation.” Roberts then states in his next letter “…I shall look forward to receiving the full report of the Tenure Committee and of your recommendations in these cases which you say is now being prepared for distribution…”Raymond B. Allen received his Ph.D. and MD from University of Minnesota. He became President of the University of Washington in 1946 until 1951. While President of the University of Washington he dealt with the Un-American Activities Committee and subsequently dismissed three professors for their affiliation with the Communist Party. He served as the first Chancellor of University of California, Los Angeles from 1951 to 1959.
Walter Orr Roberts (1915-1990) was an American astronomer and atmospheric physicist. He received his PhD in astronomy from Harvard University in 1943, later Roberts was the founding director of High Altitude Observatory. He passed in 1990.
The Interim Committee on Un-American Activities (Canwell Committee) operated from 1947-1949. It was a special exploratory committee of the Washington State Legislature which investigated the influence of the Communist Party in Washington State, most notably at the University of Washington. During the years the committee was active it subpoenaed and took to trial 12 of the University’s professors, three of whom were dismissed from the university for having Communist affiliations and three of whom were put on probation for years after the incident occurred
