An Introduction to Python for Computational Science and Engineering, developed by Hans Fangohr (2003-2021). The content and methods taught are intended for a target audience of scientists and engineers who need to use computational methods and data processing in their work, but typically have no prior programming experience or formal computer science training. The book is available: As a web page (html) As a PDF Interactively as Jupyter Notebooks on MyBinder (or use JupyterLab instead of the traditional Notebook.) The book is based on Python 3.</span

A postmodern reading of Ninotchka Rosca\u27s twice blessed

    No full text
Twice blessed, another achievement for Philippine literature. This is the only term to best describe the second novel of Ninotchka Rosca. The author has shown that even the most despised Philippine Characters can be described in a reverent manner. Moreso, Rosca\u27s novel exhibited a style with postmodern virtues. This thesis evaluates the characters, setting and style which are reflective of the tenets of post-modernism. It is an attempt to use post-modernism as literary approach. Lastly, this study attempts to show that the novel is a true example of post-modernistic writing. A discussion of the history of post modern literature, postmodern analysis, and other corollary minor approaches are presented. Also, four major characters, eight minor characters, plot and style have been chosen for analysis. Conceived as the fictional rise of the Marcos couple to power, the strength of Rosca\u27s creations lies not only in her portrayal of characters but also in her style of writing. This greatly contributed to the mythopeia of the story where it was based upon. Also it is most evident in the fictionalization of power relations in the story. She did this by giving events in which contributed to the imagery giving a rather sympathetic view of the past. It can also be seen that Rosca\u27s character are reflective of previous or even existing social realities of the Philippines. Through this, Ninotchka Rosca achieves her intent to serialize one of the most controversial couples of Philippine history, and at the same time giving us some insights and concerns of the feminist movement

Digging up the frequency of phrasal verbs in English for the Police: the case of up

    No full text
The present study focuses on the frequency of phrasal verbs with the particle up in the context of crime and police investigative work. This research emerges from the need to enlarge McCarthy and O'Dell's (2004) scope from purely criminal behavior to police investigative actions. To do so, we relied on a corpus of 504,124 running words made up of spoken dialogues extracted from the script of the American TV series Castle shown on ABC since 2009. Based on Rudzka-Ostyn's (2003) cognitive motivations for the particle up, we have identified five different meaning extensions for our phrasal verbs. Drawing from these findings, we have designed pedagogical activities for those L2 learners that study English at the Police Academy

Excerpt: Published in 1988, State of War entered the Philippine literary scene like a vehement force of nature. Lauded for its striking and elegant prose and its unabashed attempt to address national wounds that have yet to heal, the novel gave readers a glimpse into the lives of ordinary men and women as they struggled with the country’s colonial heritage, the restrictions on democracy wrought by the government, and the role of violence and sexuality in the history of Filipino women. The book overflowed with courage, sincerity, and a much needed revolutionary sentiment, much like its author, Ninotchka Rosca
