    Robert Parris (1924-1999) was known both as a composer and music critic. He earned his B.S. in composition from the Julliard School of Music in 1948, continued studies at Tanglewood from 1950-51, and went on to complete a Fulbright Scholarship from 1952-53. Parris studied with a number of composers including, Peter Mennin, William Bergsma, Jacques Ibert, Aaron Copland, Otto Luening, and Arthur Honegger. Local to the Washington, DC metro area, Parris worked as music critic for both the Washington Post and Washington Star from 1961-1975. After teaching at Washington State College and University of Maryland, Mr. Parris joined the music faculty at George Washington University in 1963. A large number of Parris compositions were published by the American Composers Alliance. This collection consists of original scores, sketches, and printing masters of works composed during Parris career

    The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Robert E. Mills. Mills joined the Marine Corps in 1939 and trained at Parris Island, South Carolina. After training, Mills was assigned to 4th Defense Battalion and sent to Cuba in 1940. Late in 1941, Mills was transferred out to Pealr Harbor and describes the Japanese attack. He manned a machine gun until he ran out of ammunition, then went aboard a small vessel and rescued folks from out of the harbor. Shortly thereafter, Mills was sent to the Solomon Islands where he discusses building an airstrip at Vella Lavella. Mills then speaks about getting communications established at Nagasaki after the war ended. He also shares an anecdote about assisting a chaplain with the baptism of several men on Iwo Jima. He also describes the time he was wounded by a Japanese shell

    Robert Barnwell wrote from Beaufort, South Carolina to Susan Ursin Niemcewicz. His discussed his health and how he had been unable to use his hands and thus unable to write for several months.     The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Gabriel Robert Caggiano. Caggiano joined the Marine Corps in 1943. He completed boot camp at Parris Island in South Carolina and provides details of his training. He was assigned to Company G, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division. They traveled to Pavuvu in the Solomon Islands for additional training. Over the next 2 years Caggiano participated in the Battle of Peleliu and the Battle of Okinawa as a Private First Class. He provides vivid details of his experiences throughout these battles. After getting wounded in battle he was sent back to the U.S. and honorably discharged from the service in November of 1945

In 1957 John Parris (at podium), popular author and columnist from Sylva and honorary member of Snug Harbor, joined the annual potato roasting festivities and entertained with storytelling.
