Rival Queens : Actresses, Performance, and the Eighteenth-Century British Theater /

Historians of British theater have often noted that the eighteenth century was an age not of the author but of the actor. In Rival Queens, Felicity Nussbaum argues that the period might more accurately be seen as the age of women in the theater, and more particularly as the age of the actress.Historians of British theater have often noted that the eighteenth century was an age not of the author but of the actor.

    No full text
This paper offers a reading of what Nussbaum called her «literary-philosophical project» that aims to show the contribution and the distinctive perspective that the author brings to the field of «law and literature». Based on this reading, it proposes three «uses» of literature in the world of the law, or three points in which the dialogue between law and literature can be productive.

Consensus in high-power multiagent systems with mixed unknown control directions via hybrid Nussbaum-based control

    No full text
This work investigates the consensus tracking problem for high-power nonlinear multiagent systems with partially unknown control directions. The main challenge of considering such dynamics lies in the fact that their linearized dynamics contain uncontrollable modes, making the standard backstepping technique fail; also, the presence of mixed unknown control directions (some being known and some being unknown) requires a piecewise Nussbaum function that exploits the a priori knowledge of the known control directions. The piecewise Nussbaum function technique leaves some open problems, such as Can the technique handle multiagent dynamics beyond the standard backstepping procedure? and Can the technique handle more than one control direction for each agent? In this work, we propose a hybrid Nussbaum technique that can handle uncertain agents with high-power dynamics where the backstepping procedure fails, with nonsmooth behaviors (switching and quantization), and with multiple unknown control directions for each agent.Accepted Author ManuscriptTeam Bart De Schutte

    Who's afraid of Martha Nussbaum?

    No full text
The author of the article takes us to the world of Martha Nussbaum, one of the most important and controversial feminist personalities of philosophy nowadays, using the interview “Who Needs Philosophy?”, by Robert S. Boyton. Unlike many intellectuals, Nussbaum is not satisfied with studying just one particular period or thinker, nor does she want to be a mere theoretical philosopher. Her idea of a better world is one in which philosophy has relevance as a practical, intellectual tool to improve mankind, a world in which everyone is equal and has the right to choose his or her way of life. Despite being the target of a lot of criticism, Nusbaum is determined to achieve her ideal of a “practical philosophy”

    No full text
This work deals with emotions from a rational perspective or, more precisely, from a cognitive perspective. It presents, fundamentally, some articulations that Robert Solomon and Martha Nussbaum have done in this regard. To further develop the issue, the following brief is divided into three chapters. In the first chapter, two important aspects are analyzed, namely: what is a theory of emotion and what demands has a true theory of emotions. In the second chapter, emotions are explained as evaluating judgments and the fundamental text of the analysis is the text Emotional Ethics of Robert Solomon. In short, what is sought is to propose to the emotions as intentional and deliberative judgments about the world, this according to the way in which an individual apprehends phenomena In the third chapter an analysis of the emotions centered in the work Landscapes of the thought of the author Martha Nussbaum is made. This section has the following structure: first, emotions are worked as judgments and the reflexive nature of emotions is emphasized based on experience, beliefs and cognitive structure. Second, we study how emotions determine human relationships, how they attach importance to certain issues or objects in the human being, and also shape the character of people
