No full textAs a Korean war veteran and boxing champion, Robert Harris Jr., has accomplished much in his life. Harris' years of service as a teacher and coach within the Milwaukee Public School System resonate the most with him and to those he has reached. In spite of the difficulty for an African American student to acquire a college degree in the 1950s, Harris was determined to follow his dream to teach and coach high school students. With great perseverance and determination, he obtained his goal, majoring in secondary education. His years of teaching at Fifth Street Elementary and North Division High School also made him a trailblazing teacher; and he was recognized as a pioneer by the Historic African American teachers of the Milwaukee Public School System. Even though he is retired, Harris continues to volunteer and serve on boards and committees to reach out to the local community he loves and knows so well

No full textThis photograph from the Ohio Penitentiary in Columbus is of 44-year-old Robert Griffin. His formal attire suggests that the photograph was taken during his trial or sentencing. Griffin was the 314th individual to be executed via the electric chair in Ohio. The caption at the bottom reads: “No. 314 Robert Harris Griffin Cuyahoga County Legally Electrocuted February 15, 1963, for the murder of Mattie Benjamin and Mary Lee Williams”
In 1885 the Ohio Penitentiary in Columbus, Ohio, became the location for all executions, which previously took place in the various county seats. In 1896 the Ohio General Assembly mandated that electrocution replace hanging as the form of capital punishment. The Ohio Penitentiary regularly offered tours as well as souvenir photographs and postcards of the building and prisoners on death row.
A total of 315 prisoners, both men and women, were executed in the electric chair known as “Old Sparky” between 1897 and 1963
