In January 1943, Gustave Guillaume published an article entitled: “Is there a deponent in French?”. By using the binomial “analytical voice – synthetic voice”, the author sheds new light on the transformation of the Latin verbal system in French: he isolates a small group of intransitive verbs (such as ‘mourir’, ‘naître’, ‘entrer’, ‘sortir’ etc.) pertaining to the category of Latin deponents, which have formed in French a new synthetic mixed voice, and are a direct legacy of Latin. Since then, the behaviour of intransitive verbs has been an area of some interest for other linguists (cf. split intransitivity). Within the framework of relational grammar, Perlmutter (1978) introduced the Unaccusative Hypothesis, showing that the subject of these verbs has the typical characteristics of an object. On the other hand, semantic approaches have put forward a set of criteria like agentivity and telicity in order to stress the semantic basis of the syntax of unaccusative verbs.
A study of the behaviour and interactions of the novel FERM protein Willin
Willin is a novel member of the Four-point-one Ezrin Radixin Moesin
(FERM) protein superfamily, containing an N-terminal FERM domain most like the
Ezrin-Radixin-Moesin (ERM) family but also the closely related protein Merlin.
Willin was initially discovered as a yeast two-hybrid binding partner of
neurofascin155, and this interaction has now been confirmed by both co-localisation
studies and the use of two different biochemical methods. Like neurofascin155,
Willin also localises to detergent resistant membranes, and like the ERM family, it is
able to bind to phospholipids. The expression of Willin appears to be toxic as the
production of cell-lines stably expressing Willin proved to be not possible and this
appears to be because it induces apoptosis in cultured cells. This is a proliferation
control function consistent with the suggestion that Willin is the human homologue of the Drosophila tumour suppressor ‘Expanded’. Three antibodies to Willin were also characterised and a novel splice variant, Willin2, subcloned into a GFP-tagged
plasmid for comparison with the original form
Major element geochemistry of sediments from the Ross Sea, Antarctica
Indicates the silicate composition of the examined sediments. The different concentrations of the major elements, their geographical distribution and inter-relations allowed the distinction of three populations of samples with specific geochemical characteristics and locations. -from Author

Fundamental differences in the radio properties of red and blue quasars: kiloparsec-scale structures revealed by e-MERLIN
Red quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) are a subset of the quasar population with colours consistent with reddening due to intervening dust. Recent work has demonstrated that red QSOs show special radio properties that fundamentally distinguish them from normal blue QSOs, specifically a higher incidence of low-power radio emission (1.4 GHz luminosities L1.4 ≈ 1025–1027 W Hz−1) that is physically compact when imaged by arcsecond-resolution radio surveys such as FIRST. In this work, we present e-MERLIN imaging of a set of intermediate-redshift (1.0 2 kpc). We report a statistically significant difference in the incidence of extended kpc-scale emission in red QSOs. From an analysis of the radio size distributions of the sample, we find that the excess radio emission in red QSOs can be attributed to structures that are confined to galaxy scales (10 kpc). Our results indicate that the primary mechanism that generates the enhanced radio emission in red QSOs is not directly connected with the nuclear engine or accretion disc, but is likely to arise from extended components such as AGN-driven jets or winds. © 2021 The Author(s) Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of Royal Astronomical Society.DJR and DMA acknowledge support from the UK Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) through ST/T000244/1.
