BioSTEAM: The open-source bioprocess simulation and techno-economic analysis modules in Python
Preliminary techno-economic analysis (TEA) of a chemical process provides critical information on the economic feasibility, technological bottlenecks, and venture risks due to process uncertainties. Current TEA methods generally rely on proprietary software to evaluate two to three design configurations with single point sensitivity analysis. Such classical methods neglect the effect of process uncertainties and fail to evaluate the complete landscape of design decisions. The limited scope of current literature obscures comparisons between process evaluations and makes it difficult to predict how possible technological developments can impact the sustainability of a process. The main difficulties in adding rigorous uncertainty analysis is high computational time and low rate of successful convergence. Additionally, relying on proprietary software presents both an economic and intellectual barrier for evaluating emerging and conceptual processes. The Bioprocess Simulation and Techno-Economic Analysis Modules, BioSTEAM, is an open-source steady state process simulation package in python for preliminary TEA that will enable rigorous uncertainty analysis through its fast and flexible platform. BioSTEAM presents an intuitive toolset of objects that handle thermodynamic properties, material flows, unit operations, recycle systems, and process specifications. The applicability of BioSTEAM is demonstrated here in the context of a design for the co-production of biodiesel and ethanol from lipid cane. The evaluation of the lipid cane biorefinery in BioSTEAM closely matches a previous evaluation of the design using SuperPro Designer (a proprietary process simulation software). BioSTEAM is well documented and readily available at the Python Package Index, a repository for published Python packages. Although BioSTEAM has not yet incorporated many of the unit operation models presented in proprietary process simulators, its extendable and transparent architecture offers users the power to build new unit operation models and share their designs without any barriers. Made in America : American goods - American jobs : A cluster based business development project
Made in America, American Goods, American Jobs was designed to provide business development support to a cluster of locally owned small garment manufacturers in Washington State. This sector had been negatively affected by global competition and trade deficits with foreign markets, resulting in business closures and job losses. A community economic development project with the goal of retaining local garment manufacturers, the Made In America project supplied assistance to companies to increase competitiveness; and to create 50 employment opportunities for low-income residents. Through customized technical assistance and resource development, the project was successful in assisting twelve (12) companies to increase their sales and market access; and created 69 jobs for low-income individuals. Right Brain Ventures, LLC : creative tools for community businesses
Right Brain Ventures, LLC (RBV) is a for-profit small business technical assistance center, whose mission is to serve arts-based and women-owned businesses in and around Montclair, New Jersey.
Montclair has decided to focus on The Arts as a centerpiece of its economic development efforts. Thus, in collaboration with various community groups, RBV's program of advisory services has been designed to be particularly responsive to the needs of visual, fine and performing artists, designers, writers and craftspeople who wish to create or develop businesses based on their art. (However, other businesses with job generation potential are welcome as well, especially women owned businesses.)
Right Brain Ventures officially opened its doors in its new home in January 2006 after operating informally since September 2005.
As of April 1, 2006 RBV has acquired 7 clients who pay monthly retainer fees for business development consulting services, and 4 clients for whom RBV has executed short term assignments. A pilot program for low-income homeowners
The Weatherization, Rehab and Asset Preservation (WRAP) Pilot Program for 503 households located in 4 specific census tracts of West Brighton, was developed whereby low-income homeowners will enjoy lowered energy cost through increased energy efficiency and reduced energy consumption in their homes, resulting from WRAP education, weatherization or rehabilitation.
The Pilot was administered under the auspices of Neighborhood Housing Services of Staten Island, Inc. (NHSSI). The organization has many programs and services geared toward pre and post-purchase housing, as well as home maintenance and safety, which were used to complement this pilot. NHSSI offers Homebuyer Education, Mortgage Facilitation, Mortgage Restructuring, Financial Fitness, Home Maintenance Training Programs, Landlord Training, Insurance Education, Low-Interest Home Improvement Loans and Grants.Operating costs totaling 100K, SI Bank & Trust Foundation - 50K. An additional $1M was set aside as bricks and mortar funds.
NHS evaluated the success of the program by evidence of (a) increased asset value of participants' homes, (b) homes brought up to code, (c) reduced cost of home maintenance and monthly energy bills, thereby increasing discretionary income and (d) improved appearance and conditions of targeted neighborhood. Gate City Community Development Corporation
The Gate City Community Development Corporation (GCCDC) project involves the development of a faith-based community development corporation by the same name serving the Nashua, NH region. GCCDC operates from buildings owned by Grace Fellowship of Nashua Inc. (GFNI) on Franklin Street in downtown Nashua. GCCDC is an independent organization whose mission is to provide training and services designed to meet the needs of immigrant and low-to-moderate income residents of the Nashua region.
During this project, GCCDC was formed, and became a sustainable community development corporation in its first year of operations, and is now comprised of a community technology center, AmeriCorps Vista program, and a furniture donation center. The host organization, during startup, was Grace Fellowship of Nashua, Inc (GFNI), which is a church-run nonprofit in Nashua. GFNI provided space and limited funding for GCCDC startup costs and provided technical assistance related to forming the CDC. This project is evaluated in this document by determining (a) was a CDC successfully formed as a Board run 501(c)3 Corporation and (b) was the CDC able to perform at least one appropriate community economic development project.
