James "bought a great deal of land" (8,000 acres) at Mount Rouse. Run capable of grazing 40,000 sheep. Describes how he has discovered a method of "washing and dressing" (drenching) sheep so that he can do as many as 8,000 per day. In 1842 James Ritchie took out a license covering the area that became the Blackwood run. Freehold was secured, and the ownership successively passed to James' brothers Daniel (a doctor who had previously served nineteen years as a Royal Navy surgeon) and John, then to Daniel's son Robert (also a businessman and politician, his son Alan and grandson Robin Ritchie. Much of this relates to business e.g. running R.B. Ritchie and Son or his own personal business e.g. corresponding with government departments, banks, accounting companies, solicitors, equipment suppliers etc. Personal correspondence with prominent people about broader agricultural issues and world affairs such as with former Prime Minister Stanley Melbourne Bruce (who Alan wrote speeches for in the 1920s) and Professor S. Wadham . A.B Ritchie and Wadham featured in an ABC Broadcast "is the pastoralist his own worst enemy?" Other notable correspondents include R.G Casey, Professor Douglas Copeland with whom Alan discussed Australian political and economic issues and various economic and pastoral societies and the C.S.I.R.O A.B Ritchie’s appointment diaries and personal journals kept by Lillian Ritchie, wife of Robert Blackwood Ritchie and mother of Robin and Alan Ritchie. Daniel Ritchie’s diary during his time as Surgeon Superintendent of the "Pestonjee Bomanjee" a hired transport transporting convicts to Van Diemen's Land. A.B Ritchie’s diary documenting his overseas travels and time with Royal Navy in Liverpool during World War 2. Ritchie and Son Pty. Ltd. farm and A.B. (Alan) Ritchie’s personal affairs. It includes a volume with the title “Super and Fencing” which was used to record statistics for the management of the farm including for hay making areas, farming, super spread, odd weights and costing of trial paddocks. It also includes the “Blackwood Paddock Book” which was used to record observations and statistics re: paddocks, silos, sheep counts, studs, wool. Cattle, horses, sales purchases sheep, cattle sales and purchases. The series also includes 3 financial journals which were used to record to record Alan Ritchie’s personal business affairs such as drawings from the R.B. Ritchie account and his personal share interests. There is no arrangement apparent in the order of the volumes. Within the journals (units 1,2 and 5), transactions are listed in chronological order by date. The Super and Fencing book (unit 3) contains a series of alphabetical tabs for each section e.g. farming under “F”, Super Spread under “S”, Odd Weights under “W.” Tabs are used within the Blackwood Paddock Book to separate the various sections.
