    Fibras ópticas, transporte óptico (DWDM), transporte TDM (SDH), redes ATM, IP y MPLS, con distintos grupos de operación brindándose servicios entre sí. Los overlays tanto tecnológicos (distinto tipo de equipos) como administrativos (distintos grupos de operación), son una realidad instaurada desde hace un buen tiempo en las redes. Ya sea por: razones históricas, conveniencia organizacional (distintos negocios de una misma empresa que se arriendan recursos entre sí), justificación económica (una empresa que arrienda recursos de otra de mayor escala o penetración) o imposición regulatoria; esta situación es presente y debemos acostumbrarnos a pensar que las redes se brindan servicios entre sí. Este trabajo da una aproximación para resolver el problema de como desplegar una red, haciendo uso de recursos de un overlay inferior, en forma robusta1 y a costo óptimo. Adelantamos que los resultados obtenidos han colmado ampliamente nuestras expectativas. En lo económico; de poder llevarse a cabo la mitad de los cambios propuestos, este proyecto se pagaría con los ahorros generados en 2 semanas. En lo académico, hemos encontrado diversos resultados teóricos interesantes. En lo estratégico, hemos identificado algunos problemas estructurales en las redes del cliente, que suponemos dispararán su análisis y solución, antes que representen un problema importante

    Using GRASP and GA to design resilient and cost-effective IP/MPLS networks

    The main objective of this thesis is to find good quality solutions for representative instances of the problem of designing a resilient and low cost IP/MPLS network, to be deployed over an existing optical transport network. This research is motivated by two complementary real-world application cases, which comprise the most important commercial and academic networks of Uruguay. To achieve this goal, we performed an exhaustive analysis of existing models and technologies. From all of them we took elements that were contrasted with the particular requirements of our counterparts. We highlight among these requirements, the need of getting solutions transparently implementable over a heterogeneous network environment, which limit us to use widely standardized features of related technologies. We decided to create new models more suitable to fit these needs. These models are intrinsically hard to solve (NP-Hard). Thus we developed metaheuristic based algorithms to find solutions to these real-world instances. Evolutionary Algorithms and Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search Procedures obtained the best results. As it usually happens, real-world planning problems are surrounded by uncertainty. Therefore, we have worked closely with our counterparts to reduce the fuzziness upon data to a set of representative cases. They were combined with different strategies of design to get to scenarios, which were translated into instances of these problems. Finally, the algorithms were fed with this information, and from their outcome we derived our results and conclusions

    When Latency Matters: Measurements and Lessons Learned

    Several emerging classes of interactive applications are demanding for extremely low-latency to be fully unleashed, with edge computing generally regarded as a key enabler thanks to reduced delays. This paper presents the outcome of a large-scale end-to-end measurement campaign focusing on task-offloading scenarios, showing that moving the computation closer to the end-users, alone, may turn out not to be enough. Indeed, the complexity associated with modern networks, both at the access and in the core, the behavior of the protocols at different levels of the stack, as well as the orchestration platforms used in data-centers hide a set of pitfalls potentially reverting the benefits introduced by low propagation delays. In short, we highlight how ensuring good QoS to latency-sensitive applications is definitely a multi-dimensional problem, requiring to cope with a great deal of customization and cooperation to get the best from the underlying network

    En este artículo se analiza el problema de diseño a costo mínimo de la red eléctrica de un parque eólico, a saber, la responsable de agregar la potencia de los aerogeneradores para luego entregarla a la red de alta tensión. El artículo presenta el problema de diseño, un modelo exacto simplificado, y explica cómo se usaron algoritmos heurísticos para resolverlo en instancias reales. Los resultados de este trabajo ayudaron a reducir los costos en un proyecto concreto en Uruguay, logrando ahorros en las inversiones de la red en cifras superiores al 30 %

    Routinely, practitioners and academics alike propose the use of trading strategies with an alleged improvement on the risk-return relation, typically entailing a considerably higher return for the given level of risk. A very popular example is “A quantitative approach to tactical asset allocation” by the fund manager M. Faber, a real hit in the SSRN online library. Is this paper a counterexample to market efficiency? We reject this conclusion, showing that a lot of caution should be used in this field, and we indicate a series of bootstrapping experiments which can be easily implemented to evaluate the performance of trading strategies

    MS-VAN3T-CARLA: An Open-Source Co-Simulation Framework for Cooperative Perception Evaluation

    The CARLA simulator stands out amongst available open-source simulators providing life-like rendering of vehicular scenarios. While several frameworks, such as OpenCDA [1], have extended CARLA capabilities for the evaluation of cooperative perception applications, a significant gap remains in the use of accurate communication models. To address this need, we present an extension of the ms-van3t simulation framework, based on the ns-3 simulator. It integrates CARLA's high-fidelity sensor and vehicle physics, OpenCDA's data fusion and control automation, with ns-3's advanced communication models. Ms-van3t-CARLA offers a comprehensive tool for researchers working on the evaluation of the effects of vehicular cooperative perception under different communication technologies

    Platoon-Local Dynamic Map: Micro cloud support for platooning cooperative perception

    Platooning is a popular vehicular application for autonomous driving on which the Platoon Leader (PL) manages all maneuvers using context information from Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) messages. However, redundant context information from nearby vehicles in the platoon can increase computational costs for the PL. To solve this issue, vehicular micro-clouds can be formed to enable collective data processing and aggregation, thus reducing the PL's perception workload. The proposed solution, called Platoon Local Dynamic Map (P-LDM), creates a single database of context information, distributing the data aggregation load among all members of the platoon. Simulation results evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed solution and compare it to typical Cooperative Perception mechanisms

    The paper focuses on the forms of cooperation between authors and their translator(s) in all cases in which the two operate simultaneously. This issue is explored on the example of the Trieste-born author Claudio Magris, who cultivates a very close relationship with most of his translators. Writing and translation have been coexisting in this author throughout his career and have resulted in the heightened sensitivity of Magris the author with regards to translation, as the first part of the analysis shows. The second part describes the dialogue between Magris and the translators of his works, and ends with the more general question of the significance and role of such a form of exchange
