Oral history interview with Shane Riley
Shane Riley, born in 1971, enlisted in the Oklahoma Army National Guard at the age of seventeen and completed college degrees before being deployed in 2002 to Egypt. He shares about his background, his decision to enter military service, and his military training. He details his multiple deployments and his duties during each time. He discusses the differences he has noticed in the military over the years and in the communities that he was working in overseas. He explains the impact his service has had on his life and his time in society outside of the military. He comments some of the challenges and discusses how he thinks war has changed. He mentions the role the National Guard plays in comparison to the U.S. Army. He gives his opinions on the state of the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq.The Armed Forces in Oklahoma Collection is a series of interviews with Oklahomans who have served or are serving in the United States military.
