Community Immersion for Homegrown Teachers: Learning “There are Never Just Negatives…”

    No full text
The authors describe an initiative between an urban public school district, a city college, and a college of education to establish a pipeline of teachers of color from and for the school district. The qualitative research occurred during the teacher candidates’ participation in a community immersion program. Centering the teacher candidates’ experiences and reactions to the community immersion highlights their identity, commitment to teaching, and the importance of exposing homegrown teachers to communities beyond their own. The authors discuss community-based curriculum in the preparation of teachers and consider how the experiences of teacher candidates of color impact program implementation

Higher Education's Use of Course Management Software

    No full text
This chapter explains what course management systems (CMS) are, lists the features of the most popular CMS, describes the advantages and disadvantages of CMS, reviews the literature on the effectiveness of learning with CMS communication tools, and discusses the future of CMS. It discusses how CMS have become an important means of computer mediated communication in higher education. CMS are not only used for distance education courses, but for traditional courses as well. Increasingly, many teaching faculty are integrating CMS to enhance communication in the traditional class making it a hybrid course. CMS provide instructors the ability to enable various modes of communication to simulate the same experience as a real classroom. The author hopes that this chapter will provide information about what CMS can do now, and what they will perceivably do in the future.</jats:p

Standing in a crooked room: Black feminism and traumatic legacies within contemporary African American literature

    No full text
This dissertation was born out of noticing a recurring theme in African American literature, which is the historical continuity of slavery on African Americans. Furthermore, this project seeks to advance scholarly discussions in the field of trauma studies in conjunction with Black Feminist studies, specifically how trauma studies can transcend its Eurocentric roots and encompass traumatic experiences of other cultures through intersectionality. The project expands on an African American literary tradition where other Black writers articulate the impact of slavery’s traumatic legacy over time. This dissertation examines four novels: Tayari Jones’s An American Marriage (2018), Jesmyn Ward’s Sing, Unburied, Sing (2017), Colson Whitehead’s The Underground Railroad (2016), and Yaa Gyasi’s Homegoing (2016). The first chapter analyzes Jones’s novel by identifying mass incarceration as an extension of slavery for African Americans and misogynoir as a microaggression that Black women experience as another source of trauma. The second chapter continues with Ward’s novel and much of the same traumatic circumstances that plague characters in Jones’s novel. The third chapter emphasizes the roles of traumatic testimony and witnessing play in articulating slavery’s psychological impact by placing Whitehead’s novel in conversation with key trauma studies concepts. The last chapter not only explores traumatic experiences from slavery to the present, but also focuses on various descendants of the same family separated by distance and circumstance. Aside from articulating traumatic experiences associated with slavery, the project’s chapters utilize the crooked room theory from Melissa Harris-Perry’s Sister Citizen (2011) to argue that the traumatic legacy of slavery is the crooked room that Black people, especially Black women, are forced to navigate in order to facilitate healing. Much like trauma, healing is not a linear concept, and healing is more about reclaiming oneself in the aftermath of traumatic experiences. Overall, this project utilizes trauma studies and Black Feminist studies as critical lenses to explain the significance of trauma and traumatic experiences that stem from slavery and how this advances scholarly discussions about African American literature.Embargo status: Restricted until 06/2026. Ethics in the Details : Communicating Engineering Ethics via Micro-Insertion

    No full text
Work is described on a National Science Foundation grant that supports the development, assessment, and dissemination of “micro-insertion” problems designed to integrate ethics into the graduate engineering curriculum. In contrast to traditional modular approaches to ethics pedagogy, micro-insertions introduce ethical issues by means of a “low-dose” approach. Following a description of the micro-insertion approach, we outline the workshop structure being used to teach engineering faculty and graduate students how to write micro-insertions for graduate engineering courses, with particular attention to how the grant develops engineering students’ (and faculty members’) ability to communicate across disciplinary boundaries. We also describe previous and planned methods for assessing the effectiveness of micro-insertions. Finally, we explain the role that technical communication faculty and graduate students are playing as part of the grant team, specifically in developing an Ethics In-Basket that will disseminate micro-insertions developed during the grant.IEEE Transactions on Professional Communications Vol. 52, Issue 1, pp. 95-108

How close can you go? : A discourse analysis how the use of creative writing as a method to disclose personal experience of sexual trauma has changed with #MeToo

    No full text
The thesis is written in the context of Creative Writing at Umeå University, Sweden and compares how the discourse regarding sexual violence is used by two survivors in their creative writing. The writers, Apryl Pooley and Thordis Elva, have written about their experiences. Elva wrote her book together with her perpetrator, Tom Stranger. The purpose of the thesis is to see if the discourse has changed, and if so in what way, between Pooley´s book that was published before #MeToo, and Elva/Stranger´s book that was published soon after #MeToo. It also aims to study the author´s thoughts about publishing and the consequences that may have. The result shows significant differences in motive for writing the books, how the discourse was before/after #MeToo and how the disclosing was recieved. It also shows that, although much have changed, there are still large problems regarding the subject, especially for survivors.

The Writings of Jesmyn Ward:Matters of Black Southern Life and Death

    No full text
Since the publication of her first novel in 2008, Jesmyn Ward has established herself as arguably the most important U.S. author of the twenty-first century. This book considers the full range of her career thus far, including National Book Award–winning novels Salvage the Bones and Sing, Unburied, Sing, as well as Ward’s widely acclaimed memoir, Men We Reaped.Martyn Bone thoughtfully examines key themes running throughout Ward’s writing: Black life in the U.S. South; the legacies of slavery and segregation; neoliberalism as the contemporary form of capitalism; environmental crisis in the Anthropocene; and human-animal relations. Bone also connects Ward’s work to major figures in the U.S. literary canon, with particular focus on William Faulkner, Zora Neale Hurston, and Toni Morrison.Reviews“It is wonderful to read a book that takes Jesmyn Ward seriously as a writer in our time and engages her work critically and respectfully. Bone manages to give an accounting for the major thematics in Ward’s work to date, and yet also opens up space for further consideration, dialogue, and critique (no easy feat, that)—all in teachable, sparklingly clear prose. This book is critical for scholars in many overlapping fields—southern studies, Black studies, American studies, C21 studies, and beyond.”—Joanna Davis-McElligatt, coeditor, Narrating History, Home, and Dyaspora: Critical Essays on Edwidge Danticat“A timely, scholastic endeavor that pays careful and incisive attention to Ward’s depictions of neoliberalism in relation to racial capitalism, human-animal dynamics, environmental disasters, and slavery’s traumatic aftermath. Bone’s ecocritical perspective adds to a growing collection of scholarship on Ward’s writing while also emphasizing the impact of her work along local, regional, and global scales.”—Apryl Lewis, author, Black Feminism and Traumatic Legacies in Contemporary African American Literature“The Writings of Jesmyn Ward offers a set of rich and complex readings of Ward’s works in the context of the neoliberal present. Through these meticulous and erudite analyses, Bone rightly positions Ward’s writing at the center of twenty-first century literary studies.”—Arin Keeble, author, Narratives of Hurricane Katrina in Context: Literature, Film and Televisio

The greatest dangers sited were: ozone depletion, air pollution, waste of water, poisioning of the ocean, damage to farmland, deforestation, loss of plant and animal species and population growth. Industrial countries are the worst polluters. They informed us that the trend can be reversed, but must come within the next decade or so. Six areas for action were suggested. One area; 11 the more efficient use of energy, water and other materials", our grade six students at Magrath School are addressing. The Magrath School has set a goal to become a "Green School". In an effort to increase environmental awareness, citizens are invited to recycle their newspapers through the school. The PROCEDURE is simple: 1- Use string to bundle your own newspapers. 2- Deliver them personally or send them with any student willing to help. 3- Stack the bundles outside Mr. Alston's room. Use the East door of the elementary wing. The School and the Magrath 3rd Ward Scouts will transport papers to Lethbridge for recycling. PLEASE help us achieve this worthwhile goal!!! ###"I do not believe in a fate that falls on men however they act; but I do believe in a fate that falls on them unless they act". Peter Lee faced 45 shots in the net, of which 9 made it past him. Jim Balderson & Chris Chatwin did their best at shadowing, but Kainai kept them contained very well. We did manage to slip two of our eleven shots past the Kainai goalie. The successful shooters were Dustin Handel assisted by Ryan Nishikawa and Del Thompson unassisted. Our exhibition game was a very close and exciting game. We lead the entire game, but ended up on the short end of a 5-4 score, as Raymond snuck a goal at the 18:46 mark of the third period.
