Submarine geohazard identification: problems and prospectives.

    No full text
Continental margins are geologically and tectonically active areas experiencing rapid geomorphic evolution. Geological processes ranging from volcanic activity to active faulting and slope instability are frequently documented on continental margins and result in areas of potential geohazard relative to human settlements along the coasts and infrastructures in the offshore. With reference to the recent developments in seafloor imaging and mapping techniques, we briefly discuss some of the main and more frequently encountered geohazards, focusing on reconnaissance and interpretative aspects that take into account the different requirements of purely scientific and purely practical issues
