Education and Intergenerational Mobility: Evidence from a Natural Experiment in Purerto Rico
Get PDFThe existence of intergenerational spillovers to public investments in schooling is often assumed in policy discussions regarding economic development. However, few studies to date have forwarded convincing evidence that externalities exist for developing countries. In this paper, we address this issue using the arguably exogenous schooling consequences of a major hurricane strike on Puerto Rico in the 1950s. Using data from the US. Census of Population for Puerto Rico, we first find that individuals on to margin of school entry at the time of the storm and residing in the most exposed regions of the island had significantly lower levels of education as adults than their counterparts in less exposed regions. Using the interaction of wind speed and age at the time of the storm as an instrument, we then find that maternal education is related to the probability that a child speaks English. Our estimates imply an additional year of education raise the probability that a child speaks English by between 4.3 and 4.5 percentage points, c approximately 24 to 28 percent. We find no conclusive evidence that parental education increases the probability that a child is enrolled, literate, or in an age-appropriate grad, On balance, these findings suggest that education is responsible at least in part for the persistence of human capital across generations.education, intergenerational mobility, natural experiment, hurricane

Get PDFOLittle is known about amblypigid spiders in Puerto Rico. The objective of this study is threefold to revise the taxonomy, to update data about geographical distribution and to provide information about the biology of each of the four species of tail-less whipspiders in the island. Three apulvillate phrynids, Phrynus longipes, P. marginemaculatus, and P. damonidaensis, are redescribed. P. damonidaensis is reported for the first time from Puerto Rico, its easternmost range in the Caribbean. Charinus aguayoi is a new species described from the Río Grande municipality. It is the first report of this genus, and it is the only pulvillated amblypygid of the Charinidae in Puerto Rico. A taxonomic key for species identification is also included.El conocimiento sobre los amblipigios de Puerto Rico es limitado. Este trabajo tiene tres objetivos: realizar una revisión taxonómica, actualizar los datos sobre distribución geográfica y proveer observaciones sobre la biología de las cuatro especies de guabás presentes en la isla. Tres especies de frínidos no pulvilados, Phrynus longipes, P. marginemaculatus y P. damonidaensis se vuelven a describir. P. damonidaensis es reportado por primera vez de la isla de Puerto Rico siendo su distribución más oriental en el Caribe. Se describe la especie nueva Charinus aguayoi coleccionada de el municipio de Río Grande. Esta especie es el primer reporte de este género en la isla, y es el único amblipigio pulvilado de la familia Charinidae en Puerto Rico. Se incluye una clave taxonómica para la identificación de las especies en la isla

Get PDFThe article poses the need for a historiographical revision on the history of radicalism, trade unionism, and communist activity in Puerto Rico during the 1920‘s and 1930‘s in view of new documentation available in the Comintern archives, located at the Russian State Archive of Social and Political History (RGASPI), in Moscow. It also questions the apparent continuity in the cronology and periodization concerning these issues by suggesting a wider panorama of economic, political, and social developments outside the limits of the island‘s radicalist movement, both at the regional and the international spheres, that may have served as catalysts for local events. The presentation includes a summary of the history of the Comintern archive, useful hints on working with Russian archives, and a complete list of documents on Puerto Rico available at the RGASPI, a short explanation of the content of each file.

También cuestiona la aparente continuidad en la cronología y periodización relacionados con estos elementos, y sugiere un panorama mucho más amplio de asuntos políticos, económicos y sociales, tanto en la esfera regional caribeña como en la internacional, que pueden haber sido agentes catalíticos para desarrollos locales en el movimiento radical. La presentación incluye un resumen de la historia del archivo del Komintern, sugerencias útiles de cómo trabajar con los archivos de Rusia, un inventario de todos los documentos sobre Puerto Rico disponibles en RGASPI y una corta explicación del contenido de cada uno de éstos.

No full textThis article provides examples of the interactive dynamics that fuse the international, regional, and local spheres within the history of communist radicalism in Puerto Rico, particularly throughout the 1930‘s. The discussion also underlines the need to include this interaction as part of the cultural experience of the Puerto Rican diaspora in New York. The archival sources of the Communist International (Comintern) in Moscow confirm the direct participation of external institutions in the organization of the local movement and its native cadres in New York. It also, tests to the role of regional intermedia-ries in international communist activity involved in the formation of the future local organizers, an unprecedented contribution to the historiography of the subject. Finally, the article proposes a possible "communist connection" in the iconographic tradition of the Popular Democratic Party.Este trabajo expone ejemplos de la dinámica interacción entre el ámbito internacional, el regional y el entorno local dentro del radicalismo comunista en Puerto Rico durante la década de 1930. También señala la necesidad de incluir este tema como un elemento en la discusión sobre la experiencia cultural de la diáspora puertorriqueña en Nueva York. La documentación del archivo de la Internacional Comunista (Comintern) en Moscú confirma la intervención de agencias internacionales con sede en Nueva York en la formación de organizadores, así como la presencia de dirigentes regionales en el proceso de aprendizaje de los cuadros puertorriqueños, algo que hasta ahora no se había documentado. The communicative process of seventh grade students: an approximation from the study of ratio and proportion*
No full textLa comunicación es una parte esencial de las matemáticas y de la educación matemática, pues permite identificar dificultades conceptuales y procedimentales en los estudiantes y genera aprendizajes colectivos de un objeto matemático. En el presente trabajo se realizó un estudio sistemático que procura caracterizar el proceso comunicativo de estudiantes de séptimo grado involucrados en la producción de textos alusivos a la razón y la proporción. La presente investigación se desarrolló siguiendo cinco fases consecutivas para la realización de la experiencia en el aula: análisis de contexto, diseño de actividades, intervención, análisis y caracterización de habilidades. Las habilidades comunicativas de los estudiantes fueron organizadas y analizadas mediante diez categorías diferentes de naturaleza interpretativa, explicativa y justificativa. Finalmente, se presentan tres apartados relacionados con las reflexiones que dan respuesta al objetivo general de la investigación de aula realizada. Como resultado principal, se encontró que la práctica de la producción de textos favorece en gran medida el trabajo en equipo, el pensamiento crítico y creativo de los estudiantes, y establece una relación maestro-educando más horizontal. In the present work, a systematic study was carried out that seeks to characterize the communicative process of seventh grade students involved in the production of texts alluding to reason and proportion. The present research was conducted through five consecutive phases for the accomplishment of the experience in the classroom: analysis of context, design of activities, intervention, analysis, and characterization of abilities. On the other hand, the communication skills of the students were organized and analyzed through ten different categories of interpretative, explanatory, and justifying nature. Finally, three sections are presented related to the reflections answering to the general objective of the classroom research carried out. As a main result, it was found that the text production incentives teamwork, critical and creative thinking of students, and establishes a horizontal teacher-student relationship. We expect that the present results will constitute as a first step to motivate mathematics educators to design activities that respond to the educational needs of the students. * work. ** Facultad de Ciencias.
