Rickie Wright (Class of 1977) was interviewed by Nia Kamau in the Oral History Studio at Fondren Library at Southern Methodist University on October 17, 2019. Ms. Wright was born in Dallas, Texas and spent her early childhood in the city. She proudly recollected the African-American community that she grew up with in South Dallas and what is now known as Uptown Dallas. Ms. Wright was raised by her father and grandparents, so she normally lived with them during the week and her father on the weekends. She described the integration of the city's public schools, which she experienced as a child and teenager, and which motivated her to excel in her studies. Ms. Wright wanted to attain a university education and applied to various institutions like Harvard, Southern Methodist University, and Howard. Ultimately, she decided to pursue her studies at SMU because she wanted to help her family as a number of them developed chronic illnesses. During her time at SMU, Ms. Wright became involved in prominent groups like the Black League of African American Students (BLAACS). Ms. Wright led and helped establish the first black women’s sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha, one of her proudest moments. She appreciated the opportunity to meet and hear prominent leaders like Angela Davis, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, and Ronald Reagan at the school. Today, Ms. Wright takes pride in her two children, who acquired university degrees, and heads a non-profit which provides resources to students in their academic endeavors
