Using a nominal GDP rule to guide discretionary monetary policy
Get PDFGiven doubts about the reliability of the monetary aggregates as intermediate targets of monetary policy, the Federal Reserve attempts to meet its dual goals--gradual reduction of inflation and mitigation of cyclical downturns in output--through purely discretionary adjustments of an interest rate instrument in response to myriad incoming data. A procedure in which the Fed would consult a nominal GDP feedback rule, while retaining the flexibility to use discretion in its monetary policy decisions, might contribute to achieving its long-run inflation goal without significantly interfering with its ability to pursue its short-run cyclical goal. How to be a woman. Models of masochism and sacrifice in young adult fiction
No full textBuffy, Bella, Veronica, Katniss, Clary, Tris and Saba : For two decades post-feminist heroines have faced life-threatening trials as part of their progress to womanhood. In this chapter I consider how young adult popular fictions operate as forms of pedagogy for young women by offering them particular models of maturity and womanhood. I explore the recurrence and reformulation of a persistent pattern of behaviour in which heroines engage in risky and/or masochistic behaviours for which they are emotionally rewarded.. These recurrences function as a form of vicarious experiential learning in which readers and viewers learn that emotional gratification and adult status are conferred through self-harm and self-sacrifice. Popular culture is not a monolithic form and young adult fictions are no exception. An analysis of fictional examples of this behaviour pattern challenges the idea that heroines today are empowered agents as a result of the legacy of feminism. At the same time, the analysis belies any notion that fictions are universally hegemonic and oppressive – fictions can and do disrupt and interrogate this pattern of emotional masochism. Scholars of public pedagogy have explored the complexities, contradictions and subtleties of the pedagogical process. Sandlin O’Malley and Burdick (2011) in their review of public pedagogy literature acknowledge that some scholarship has demonstrated how “the teaching and learning inherent within daily life can be both oppressive and resistant” (p. 144). Jubas and Knutson (2012) also see public pedagogy as an arena where contradictions and tensions are in play. They argue that we can see “New examples of dialectic or tensions … between the authority of the producer and the consumer; between traditional structures which ground identities and help people make sense of cultural texts, and personal agency which frees people to choose and invent identities and meanings” (p. 86). This analysis aims to contribute to understandings of the complexities of public pedagogy by showing how fictions aimed primarily at young women both resist and accommodate patriarchy

Odoyevsky (1803-1869) was the Russian writer, philosopher, musicologist and subtle musical critic, public figure, founder of "Society of philosophy-lovers" and author of "Motley Tales with Witticisms", fascinating monument of native culture; the book was published only once during the life of the writer and afterwards was not republished as the cycle. In literary criticism "Motley Tales" as the unified and important cycle by V. F. Odoyevsky were given scant coverage, although this literary work marked the beginning of new period in the writer's oeuvre; an image of narrator Homoseyko is especially interesting because it is not only the intellectual hero, but also the alter ego of the writer. "Motley Tales" manifest a unique opportunity of watching the rising of themes and motives which will be revealed in the writer's creation later, as well as following the formation of philosophical, aesthetic and artistic principles of author, as his fairy tales include the patterns of philosophical grotesque, social and moralizing story, folklore/psychological fantasy
Parametric Structural Design of Vertical-Axis Tidal Turbine Arrays
No full textThesis (Master's)--University of Washington, 2023This thesis presents an approach for the structural design of vertical-axis tidal turbinearrays, including both the turbine blades and the supporting superstructure. Design load
cases and performance goals are established in a Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD)
framework. A simplified frame model is derived to efficiently perform a parametric study
on blade structural performance using loads derived from hydrodynamic simulations. This
model is compared to a higher resolution finite element model of the blade to identify ways
in which the simplified model may underestimate stresses and deflections. A frame model
is developed for the superstructure using loads derived from experimental hydrodynamic
data. The design approach and component models are implemented in a parametric design
algorithm which determines the required size of each structural component for a given set of
flow, control, and geometric parameters. The parametric design algorithm is applied for a
range of turbine conditions representative of potential sites and control strategies. Trends in
the structural requirements, controlling limit states, and limits of feasibility are discussed
