The Singer or the Song? Developments in Performers' Rights from the Perspective of a Cultural Economist

    No full text
Over the last century, performers gradually acquired statutory protection of their economic and moral rights. These rights are not copyright in the legal sense but neighboring rights and until recently, they were mainly remuneration rights that are collectively administered. With the WPPT (WIPO Performers and Phonograms Treaty), performers now have individual exclusive rights for digital performances; this leads to the question: what has motivated this change – is it a change in the perception of the value of performer or a change brought about by the changing technology of copying or, indeed, a change that reflects different economic costs and benefits? The paper discusses the role of copyright law as an incentive to performers and asks if the economic role of the performer is so different from that of the author. The conclusion is that a complex interaction of the legal regulations, economic conditions and institutional arrangements for administering these new rights will determine the outcome

Vaccination Against Lawsonia intracellularis Decreases Shedding of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium in Co-Infected Pigs and Alters the Gut Microbiome

Deposited here are fastq files of sequencing of the V1-V3 region of the 16S rRNA gene from feces of each animal of the study from the time point of prior to infection (0 days post infection) to 49 days post infection. Descriptions of each sample are in the mapping file named “MappingFileSubmission.txt”. The sequences are in the file “FastqCoinfectionMicrobiome.tar.gz”.Salmonella enterica is a leading cause of foodborne illness worldwide and pork can serve a source of infection. In this study, we investigated if vaccinating pigs against Lawsonia intracellularis, a common pathogen of swine that has previously been shown to favor Salmonella enterica infection, confers protection against Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium. We investigated the underlying changes in the gut microbiome mediated by single S. Typhiumurium infection compared to co-infection with L. intracellularis as well as the effect of vaccination on the microbiome. In this study, a total of five treatment groups were used: 1) challenged with S. Typhimurium alone (Sal), 2) challenged with both S. Typhimurium and L. intracellularis (Sal Law), 3) challenged with S. Typhimurium and vaccinated against L. intracellularis (Sal Vac), 4) challenged with both S. Typhimurium and L. intracellularis and vaccinated against L. intracellularis (Sal Law Vac), and 5) non-infected control (Control).USDA-AFRI grant 1005423Leite, Fernando L L; Singer, Randall S; Ward, Tonya; Gebhart, Connie J; Isaacson, Richard E. A igualdade e as implicações do problema de singer

    No full text
Arneson, no artigo What, if Anything, Renders all Humans Morally Equal?, analisa as idéias de Singer e afirma encontrar um “problema”. No seu entender, Singer reintroduz o elitismo, que, justamente, se propõe rejeitar. Arneson fez uma interpretação “distorcida” de Singer, o que se procurará demonstrar no presente trabalho
