    Strain sensing using optical fibers

    No full text
The main source of attenuation which will be studied is the optical fiber's sensitivity to bending at radii that are much larger than the radius of the fiber. This type of environmental attenuation causes losses that are a function of the severity of the bend. The average attenuation caused by bending varies exponentially with the bend radius. There are many different fibers, sources, and testing equipment available. This thesis describes tests that were performed to evaluate the variables that effect bending related attenuation and will discuss the consistency of the results. Descriptions and comparisons will be made between single mode and multimode fibers as well as instrumentation comparisons between detection equipment. Detailed analysis of the effects of the whispering gallery mode will be performed along with theorized methods for characterization of these modes

An Econometric and Experiential Analysis of the Recycling Industry

    No full text
iv, 32 p.Royal Oak Recycling is an independent recycling company located in Royal Oak, Michigan. The author spent the summer of 2012 assisting the management team, specifically Habib and Ed Mamou (owner and vice-president respectively), in the day-to-day management of the company, the acquisition of new customers and lengthy negotiations over price. Prior to that experience, the author completed an econometric analysis of components of the recycling industry to gain knowledge about the field. This research proved to be valuable, and eased the transition into the recycling industry. Ed and Habib own two companies, Royal Oak Storage and the Root Restaurant and Bar, in addition to Royal Oak Recycling. The author was afforded the opportunity to work at both places, diversifying his experience. The exposure to these three industries elucidated a vast array of business concepts in finance, marketing, econometrics statistics, and accounting
