    The article reviews briefly the astronomy and astronomy-related content of the six A-level physics specifications in the UK, of physics in the International Baccalaureate and GCSE astronomy. A web-link is provided to a detailed analysis by topic and by specification. The role of robotic telescopes controlled over the Internet is also discussed. The article follows on from the article in the last issue of SSR (Beare, 2004) which surveyed useful resources for teaching astronomy at this level

    Mosaic materials in an art deco steel-framed building

    The mosaic coving at the Grade II* listed Freemasons’ Hall in London is an example of a mosaic on an Art Deco steel-framed building. Microstructural and chemical characterisation of loose mortars and tesserae were undertaken to inform conservation efforts and advise whether a protective coating was needed to prevent further fading of gold gilding. Rigorous testing used optical imaging, scanning electron microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis with differential scanning calorimetry. Laboratory evidence demonstrated the glass tesserae were created using traditional techniques. The glass tesserae were soda-lime-silica glass with lead. The gold glass tessera was produced in the ancient Roman style which included a glass cartellina layer, so further protective coating was not needed. Historical records confirmed sheets of mosaic tesserae were prefabricated in Italy. The grout and thin-set mortar were the same low hydraulicity mortar mix, which enabled mosaic tesserae positions to be adjusted as required. The bedding coat mortar was a hydraulic cement mortar that was applied on top of an early example of foamed mortar from 1932. This unique study analyses a traditional style mosaic that was installed during a pivotal point in construction history where foamed mortars and steel framed buildings were introduced. It demonstrates how archival research and laboratory testing of small-sized samples enhance the building’s significance and architectural interest by improving the knowledge of its history

    Elliptical Distance Transforms And Object Splitting

    The classical morphological method to separate fused objects in binary images is to use the watershed transform on the complement of the distance transform of the binary image. This method assumes roughly disk-like objects and cannot separate objects when they are fused together beyond a certain point. In this paper we revisit the issue by assuming that fused objects are unions of ellipses rather than mere disks. The problem is recast in terms of finding the constituent primary grains given a boolean model of ellipses. To this end, we modify the well-known pseudo-Euclidean distance transform algorithm to generate arbitrary elliptical distance transforms to reduce the dimension of the problem and we present a goodness-of-fit measure that allows us to select ellipses. The results of the methods are given on both synthetic sample boolean models and real data

    Informal Transnational Police-to-Police Information Sharing: Its Structure and Reform

    This thesis examines the informal sharing of information and cooperation between police agencies across international borders, and how it is or should be informed by international human rights law. The author looks at how intelligence-led policing theory has affected transnational policing. A distinction is made between police actions made on domestic soil that have adverse consequences abroad and police actions made on foreign soil that have adverse consequences. The first category of cases is firmly within jurisdiction and covered by domestic and international legal obligations. The second category of cases introduces the concept of the extraterritorial application of international human rights instruments. The theory is illustrated by the case studies of the Bali Nine and of Maher Arar. Finally the author suggests methods of best practice for transnational information sharing and suggests that all government agencies should follow these rules

    A simple yet accurate method for students to determine asteroid rotation periods from fragmented light curve data

    Professional astronomers use specialized software not normally available to students to determine the rotation periods of asteroids from fragmented light curve data. This paper describes a simple yet accurate method based on Microsoft Excel® that enables students to find periods in asteroid light curve and other discontinuous time series data of the sort that they might obtain from robotic telescopes like the Faulkes Telescopes. The method is based on least squares fitting of a Fourier sum model. An initial estimate of the rotation period is made using a composite light curve obtained by superposition of the separate data sets. This initial estimate is then refined by observing how the variance of residual errors changes as the period is varied and the model moves in and out of phase with individual sets of observations. Examples are given relating to the rotation periods of six asteroids based on light curve data of varying quality from excellent to poor
