LANCE gave Rice three great years of basketball; during the 1951-52 and 1952-53 seasons when Rice beat the reigning collegiate champs and finished second in the SWC, and 1953-54 when the Owls put it all together to be co-champs then smashed Texas in the playoff to go to the NCAA tournament.
The latter two seasons, Don was consensus all-SWC along with his four-year teammate, Gene Schwinger. He also received plenty all-America attention. Drafted by the Minneapolis Lakers, he turned down pro ball to go into business.
Coach Don Suman found Lance almost unknown at West Texas’ small Sudan High. Don’s favorite trick was to see enough daylight to take a chance then drive for the bucket. There he was either fouled, he scored, or he set up and easy tip-in for the taller Schwinger following on his heels.
