Ovdje donosim gotovo nepoznatu biografiju Ivane Rossi, sažetak njezine disertacije i pregled recepcije Bergsonove filozofije u nas.The Croatian woman philosopher Ivana Rossi (1892–1963) was the first Croatian woman to defend a doctorate in philosophy in 1916 at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb. The topic of her dissertation was „The Basic Thoughts of Henry Bergson’s Philosophy“ (Osnovne misli filozofije Henri Bergsona). This dissertation was written much before Henri Bergson’s death in 1941, while he was professionally still very active. Ivana Rossi’s dissertation is the first serious presentation of Henri Bergson’s philosophical thought among the South Slavs. For hitherto unknown reasons — mostly likely personal — Ivana Rossi did not even attempt to work as a professional philosopher in the Academia. (She spent her entire professional career as a high school teacher in Zagreb, working in three different gymnasia: the “Kraljevska ženska realna gimnazija”, the “Partizanska realna gimnazija”, and the “III. muška realna gimnazija”.) In 1929, she published the article, „Some of Henri Bergson’s Thoughts on Aesthetics“ in the journal Književnik. Her second published work is her translation of James Barrie’s „Peter Pan in Kensington Park“ published in 1922. This book is the first Croatian translation of a book on Peter Pan. In this article, in addition to the hitherto little–known biography of Ivana Rossi and the reception of Bergson’s philosophy in Croatia, the author also presents a summary of her dissertation

The triterpenoid curcumene mediates the relative hydrophilicity of Bacillus subtilis spores

    No full text
: Spores of Bacillus subtilis are surrounded and protected by the coat and the crust, multi-layered structures mainly made of proteins and polysaccharides. These polysaccharides are covalently linked to some of the coat and crust proteins and influence some spore properties, such as surface adhesion and hydrophilicity. This study reports that a mutant strain lacking the spsA-L operon, encoding 11 enzymes involved in the synthesis of spore surface polysaccharides, produced spores exposing on their surface hydrophobic molecules that were responsible for the drastic reduction of hydrophilicity of the mutant spores. Biochemical and genetic data support the identification of the C35-terpenoid curcumene, a precursor of the spore-associated lipid sporulene, as the highly hydrophobic molecule present on the surface of mutant spores.IMPORTANCEBacterial spores are the most resistant cell forms on Earth. The metabolically quiescent spores withstand conditions that would be lethal for other cells, maintaining the capacity to sense the environment and respond to the presence of favorable conditions by germinating. Such remarkable resistance is also due to the complex layers that surround the spore cytoplasm and protect it against damaging factors. Altogether, the spore surface layers form a complex cell structure composed of proteins, polysaccharides, and, as highlighted by this study, also of lipids. Understanding the complexity of the spore surface and the specific molecules involved in its structure is an essential step for unraveling the mechanisms underlying the spore's resistance to environmental assaults

ABSTRAKT Univerzita Karlova, Farmaceutická fakulta v Hradci Králové Katedra biologických a lékařských věd Název diplomové práce: Western blot analýza markerů endotelové dysfunkce v myší aortě po podávání vysokotukové diety Vedoucí práce: RNDr. Metody: V práci byly sledovány změny v expresi endotelové syntázy oxidu dusnatého (eNOS), endoglinu (ENG), endotelinu-1 (ET-1), intercelulární adhezní molekuly 1 (ICAM- 1) a vaskulární adhezní molekuly 1 (VCAM-1). Giants as Mythological Creatures in two Stories by Ivana Brlić - Mažuranić

    No full text
This master's thesis is based on previous research concerning giants in which the characteristics of giants as mythological creatures were described. Based on those studies, this work analyzes giants in two tales by Ivana Brlić – Mažuranić – Regoč and Priča o Zorku Bistrozorkom i o Sreći. Most authors who have written about the literary opus of Ivana Brlić – Mažuranić wrote mostly on the influences of Slavic mythology on her inspiration, her Tales of long ago and the mythological creatures within them, while giants and the rest of her literary works were somewhat less researched. This thesis focuses on researching and describing giants from a psychological aspect and, in that manner, contributes to previous research concerning Ivana Brlić – Mažuranić. Giants appear in numerous mythologies around the world, but each one of them presents a different version of the creature and this thesis describes the characteristic of giants as presented by author in her unique way. The tales have been analyzed from a psychological viewpoint and the characters have been described using the Big Five personality traits theory

Clinical Characterization of a 6-Year-Old Patient with Autism and Two Adjacent Duplications on 10q11.22q11.23. A Case Report

    No full text
Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder presenting in the first 3 years of life. Deficits occur in the core areas of social communication and interaction and restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests or activities. The causes of autism are unknown, but clinical genetic studies show strong evidence in favor of the involvement of genetic factors in etiology. Molecular genetic studies report some associations with candidate genes, and candidate regions have emerged from several genome-wide linkage studies. Here, we report a clinical case of autism in a 6-year-old boy with double duplication on 10q11.22q11.23 with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), intellectual disability, developmental delay, hypotonia, gross-motor skills deficit, overgrowth and mild dysmorphic features. In the literature, only five cases of ASD with 10q11.21q11.23 duplication are reported. This is the first extensive clinical description of an ASD subject with 10q11.22q11.23 duplication. Our findings suggest that 10q11.21q11.23 microduplication could represent a copy number variant that predisposes to autism

The paper focuses on the phraseology of the early 20th century, used by Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić in her most famous prose works. Phraseology is observed from two perspectives – as a linguistic discipline that studies phraseological units, and as a particular manner of expression unique to the author herself. We have analyzed the structural and semantic aspects of phraseological units, and concluded that her phraseology belongs to conversational style
