Miss Ann C. Whitman
Secretary to General Dwight D. Eisenhower
Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
Dear Miss Whitman;
I was very pleased to learn that General Eisenhower plans to attend
the meeting of the Board ol Trustees of Gettysburg College to be held at the Union
League in Philadelphia on December 12.
The meeting will open at 9:00 A.M. and will doubtless extend into
yJs the afternoon. There will be a luncheon, of course, at the League, Probably the
meeting will close by 3:00 and no later than 4:00.
I will be driving to Philadelphia on December 11 and would be very
happy to stop in Gettysburg for General Eisenhower and then drive him to Phila¬
delphia. I will be returning after the meeting and would, of course, be glad to
bring him to Gettysburg. If I can be of any assistance in the trip to or from
Philadelphia, I would appreciate your contacting me.
Please advise General Eisenhower that all of the members of the
Board of Trustees will look forward to having the General present at the meeting.
Very truly yours,
Paul H. Rhoads

Dr. Carl Arnold Hanson, President
Gettysburg College
Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
Dear Dr. Hanson:
I am enclosing herewith a copy of a letter which I have received
from the Secretary of General Eisenhower. Also enclosed is a copy of my reply.
I am very pleased with this interest shown by General Eisenhower. I am certain
that he can be of very substantial assistance to the College if his aid is requested.
We were very glad to learn that one of our friends from the Harris¬
burg area, Robert S. Trullinger, Jr. , entered with the Freshman Class this Fall.
He is a very outstanding young man. I hope that he will have contact with you
from time to time.
With best regards,
Very truly yours
