Cartographier et représenter les migrations internes en Italie

Contemporary society is increasingly characterized by an intense mobility of individuals, which has been boosted by the evolution of transportation. Indeed, although the development of means of communication has greatly reduced the need to physically reach places, it is evident how nowadays people can move easily and faster than in the past. Undoubtedly, internal migration represents a fundamental aspect of mobility, whose concept is strongly linked to that of space. In this regard, while international migrations refer to a wide territorial context, internal migration involves a detailed and precise territory. Thus, chartography techniques are widely considered to be the best representation of internal migration. In fact, cartography has been used since the earliest studies of internal migrations. However, given the size and density of the flows, other methods of representation have often been preferred. The objective of this research, is therefore to investigate different methods of representation of internal migration, including cartography. In doing so, it is here presented an overview of the different methods of representation adopted by scholars to describe internal migration in Italy, with the aim of highlighting their limits and possibilities. Through a chronological approach, this article tries to demonstrate how the first map, created with traditional graphic instruments, seems to be the best appropriate tool through which representing the phenomenon at hand.

Demographic sustainability in Italian territories: The link between depopulation and population ageing

Since the Second World War, Italy has experienced major demographic changes, including increasing survival, decreasing fertility and higher rates of immigration. These changes have silently and slowly led to important shifts in the structure and the territorial distribution of the population. Thus, like in many other European countries, population ageing and depopulation have become the most relevant demographic phenomena in Italy. In this paper, we studied the relationship between depopulation and ageing in Italian territories in the 1971–2019 period using the census data of the Italian municipalities and applying spatial techniques. We found that high levels of depopulation later result in high levels of population ageing, and that recent population ageing processes are also connected to ongoing depopulation processes, thereby creating a vicious circl

In European Countries, many territories experienced and are still experiencing a depopulation. The negative balance of births and deaths is combined with a negative net migration. At the same time, the decrease in births and increase in life expectancy caused the population ageing. Depopulation is strongly connected with population ageing. The aim of this work is to understand the relationship between depopulation and ageing population and the sustainability of a high level of two phenomena. We study these phenomena and their relationship in the Italian territories in the period 1951-2011. We analyse the most detailed administrative level, the municipalities. Census data are used. Correlation coefficient between depopulation and population ageing indicators are calculated in order to investigate the association between the two phenomena. A regression model is applied in order to understand if population ageing is determined by the population variations. Finally, the municipalities, which experienced continuing depopulation, are examined in depth. A strong depopulation has determined the high level of population ageing, but the recent population ageing has contributed to the ongoing depopulation, creating a vicious circle. Long-term depopulation and strong ageing population seem to be not sustainable in the near future

Population ageing in Italy after the 2008 economic crisis: a demographic approach

Population ageing is a significant demographic change. The Italian population is one of the oldest in the world. Studies have demonstrated that the economic crisis, beginning in 2008, is related to demographic dynamics. We believe that this crisis has an impact on Italian population ageing. We show that effects of the current economic crisis on population ageing are already observable. We predict how the current economic crisis will affect population ageing in the future until 2026. We estimate the number of births and net migration entries that did not take place due to the economic crisis. We find that missing births and missing net migration entries attributed to the current economic crisis have already had and will have an effect on the speed of population ageing in Italy. The demographic effects of this short-term economic crisis will become even more visible in the future. The results can help institutions have an overview of the consequences of the worsening demographic dynamics on the population structure due to adverse economic conditions. This paper is an important warning about the consequences of unexpected shocks. Demographic scientists, as well as policymakers, should be very interested in our results

Territory and population: demographic trend of the metropolitan city of Rome

Since the 1970s, in Italy, there have been deep changes in demographic processes that have led to the Italian population has experienced firstly a slight growth, then a growth due only to immigration, and, in recent years, a demographic decline. The demographic trends of the large cities was different, also influenced by internal migration and opposed to the trends of the rural territories. In particular, Rome has grown rapidly and its attractiveness has spread to the entire province, which in 2014 became the Metropolitan City of Rome. The aim of this paper is therefore to examine the evolution of the population in the municipalities of the Metropolitan City of Rome, from 1971 to 2019, distinguishing the municipalities of the central area, the municipalities forming a ring around this area, and the other municipalities of the Metropolitan City. A descriptive analysis of the inter-censual growth rate of the municipalities of the metropolitan city of Rome was then be carried out. Then, we applied a simultaneous equation model where the endogenous variable is the inter-censual growth rate of the municipal resident population. This allowed us to take into account that the population trend observed in each of the intercensal periods depends on the intensity and geographical distribution of the same phenomenon in the previous decade. In the Metropolitan City of Rome, the demographic evolution of the municipalities is not at all homogeneous. The increase in population in the municipalities of the metropolitan city has certainly been influenced by the distance from the capital city. In our model, in which both the past evolution of the population and the demographic and geomorphological characteristics are taken into account, the geographical position with respect to the capital resulted in being important in explaining the demographic dynamics of the various municipalities of the metropolitan city. This result shows the peculiarity of this area

Italians and Foreigners Internal Mobility in Italy: an Application of Gravitational Models

In Italy, between 1995 and 2005, the changes of residence between Italian municipalities increased of nearly 19%. Simultaneously, the contribution of the foreign population to internal migrations reached the level of 14%. Structural factors and a greater propensity to mobility may partly explain the foreign population’s contribution to internal mobility. This work aims at assessing the structural characteristics of internal migrations of the foreign and the Italian population. Besides the classical measures, we adopt a gravitational model which allows to quantify the effects on internal mobility due to the dimension of the populations in the areas of origin and destination and the distance between macro-areas. The estimates obtained for the years 1995, 2000 and 2005, clearly highlights the different behaviours of Italians and foreigners and a different evolution of phenomenon
