Numerical simulations of strong wind situations near the Mediteranean French Coast: comparison with FETCH data

    No full text
A detailed analysis is made of some typical strong wind situations near the French Mediterranean coast. Special attention has been paid to the wind from the north-northwest in the Gulf of Lion, also called the mistral. The analysis is made from both the synoptic and mesoscale point of view with the aid of numerical simulations carried out with the Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS) to study the main atmospheric, climatic, and meteorological characteristics of this wind in the Gulf of Lion. Simulations were made with this model during the periods of 20-22 March and 24-26 March 1998. Afterward, a comparison was made with the meteorological measurements collected during the international Flux, Etat de la Mer et Te´le´de´tection en Condition de Fetch Variable (FETCH) campaign (Gulf of Lion, March-April 1998). The comparison between the simulated wind fields and the values measured by the coastal meteorological stations, an oceanographic buoy, and the ship Atalante at sea help to give full understanding of the complicated physical processes that characterize strong wind situations in coastal zone

Tight Bounds on List-Decodable and List-Recoverable Zero-Rate Codes

    No full text
In this work, we consider the list-decodability and list-recoverability of codes in the zero-rate regime. Briefly, a code ⊆ [q]ⁿ is (p,,L)-list-recoverable if for all tuples of input lists (Y₁,… ,Y_n) with each Y_i ⊆ [q] and |Y_i| = , the number of codewords c ∈ such that c_i ∉ Y_i for at most pn choices of i ∈ [n] is less than L; list-decoding is the special case of = 1. In recent work by Resch, Yuan and Zhang (ICALP 2023) the zero-rate threshold for list-recovery was determined for all parameters: that is, the work explicitly computes p_*: = p_*(q,,L) with the property that for all ε > 0 (a) there exist positive-rate (p_*-ε,,L)-list-recoverable codes, and (b) any (p_*+ε,,L)-list-recoverable code has rate 0. In fact, in the latter case the code has constant size, independent on n. However, the constant size in their work is quite large in 1/ε, at least || ≥ (1/(ε))^O(q^L). Our contribution in this work is to show that for all choices of q, and L with q ≥ 3, any (p_*+ε,,L)-list-recoverable code must have size O_{q,,L}(1/ε), and furthermore this upper bound is complemented by a matching lower bound Ω_{q,,L}(1/ε). This greatly generalizes work by Alon, Bukh and Polyanskiy (IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 2018) which focused only on the case of binary alphabet (and thus necessarily only list-decoding). We remark that we can in fact recover the same result for q = 2 and even L, as obtained by Alon, Bukh and Polyanskiy: we thus strictly generalize their work. Our main technical contribution is to (a) properly define a linear programming relaxation of the list-recovery condition over large alphabets; and (b) to demonstrate that a certain function defined on a q-ary probability simplex is maximized by the uniform distribution. This represents the core challenge in generalizing to larger q (as a binary simplex can be naturally identified with a one-dimensional interval). We can subsequently re-utilize certain Schur convexity and convexity properties established for a related function by Resch, Yuan and Zhang along with ideas of Alon, Bukh and Polyanskiy

Surface reflectance anisotropy of indium-terminated GaAs(100) surfaces

    No full text
The growth of thin indium-layers on the GaAs(100) As-rich (2 x 4)/c(2 x 8) surface has been investigated by reflectance anisotropy spectroscopy (RAS), LEED and AES. Clean surfaces of the (2 x 4)/c(2 x 8) reconstruction were prepared in UHV by thermal desorption of a protective arsenic layer deposited on homoepitaxially grown MBE layers. Room temperature deposition of indium on the (2 x 4)/c(2 x 8) surface and subsequent annealing at 450 degrees C leads to a 90 degrees rotation of symmetry in the LEED pattern at a threshold coverage of 0.5 monolayers, i.e. a change from the (2 x 4)/c(2 x 8) to the (4 x 2),/c(8 x 2) reconstruction. The RAS spectra show the evolution of a distinct negative feature at 1.8 eV, that shifts to 2.1 eV after annealing, corresponding to optical transitions attributed to In-dimers orientated along the [011]-direction. AES analysis shows a change in growth mode beyond 0.5 ML indicating saturation of all available adsorption sites at this coverage and RAS spectra show a contribution from additional disordered In. The AES spectra display no evidence of a surface exchange reaction between gallium and arsenic atoms, thus indicating a surface termination by In-dimers adsorbed on a layer of As

Optical characterization of indium-terminated GaAs(001) surfaces

    No full text
We have investigated the growth of thin indium layers on As- and Ga-terminated GaAs(001) surfaces by reflectance anisotropy spectroscopy (RAS), low energy electron diffraction (LEED), and auger electron spectroscopy. Room temperature deposition of indium on the (2 X 4)/c(2 X 8) surface and subsequent annealing at 450 degrees C leads to the formation of an In-terminated surface showing a (4X2) LEED pattern, accompanied with strong changes in the measured surface optical anisotropy. When indium is deposited onto the (4X2)/c(8 X2) surface, on the contrary, the (4X2) In-terminated surface is already formed at room temperature deposition without needing annealing, as demonstrated by the RAS spectra. The finding that almost identical RAS spectra and (4X2) LEED patterns are obtained in both cases shows that the same final atomic structure is achieved. Finally, we conclude that the structure of the In-terminated surface is similar to that of the clean Ga-rich surface, although a more detailed model would need accurate calculations of the microscopic origin of the measured anisotropy

The Historical \u27Wiener Zeitung\u27 and its Necrologies as a Basis for a Vienna Time Machine: Digital Approaches to an Automatic Identification of Toponyms

The Historical ‘Wiener Zeitung’ and its Necrologies as a Basis for a Vienna Time Machine: Digital Approaches to an Automatic Identification of Toponyms: In the context of the focus on ‘Viennese Pulp’, Claudia Resch, Nina C. Rastinger, and Thomas Kirchmaier’s contribution on the Wiener Zeitung forms something of a counterpoint – the sheets the periodical was printed on in the eighteenth century were good quality, and the contents it disseminated also had little in common with a sensational yellow press. As other newspaper creations of the eighteenth century, the paper, founded as Wien[n]erisches Diarium in 1703, presented itself as a leading medium and serious source of news from the start, thus clearly distancing itself from a number of other products of daily (leaflet) journalism. The digital workshop report presents the necrologies as starting points for an automatic identification of toponyms – and as a basis for a ‘Vienna Time Machine’.In the context of the focus on \u27Viennese Pulp\u27, Claudia Resch, Nina C.
