An empirical model of long-term development for accommodation facilities: the role of smart destination
This paper draws on the literature on innovation and networking in tourism industry to investigate how the promotional tools developed by destinations – websites for information and booking, mobile apps, e-commerce websites, tourist cards, Business Intelligence (BI) and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software – may contribute to the long-term development of accommodations in the territory. A model is created to analyse the impact of destinations’ digital tools on booking channels, direct and intermediated (both online and offline), and in turn their effect on revenue. Furthermore, a deeper investigation is conducted to have evidence of possible different output by clustering accommodation facilities by location, typology or clientele. Hypotheses are tested with a generalized linear model and an ordered logistic regression on data retrieved from 1,226 accommodations distributed in the Italian territory. Empirical results evidence the contribution of smart destinations in increasing the competitiveness of the tourism firms in the same area
The Process of Business Model Design in a Dynamic Context: the Case of Mobile Middleware Technology Providers
The purpose of the paper is to explore the evolution of a company’s business model, analyzing how external changes due to the market turbulence can determine the reshaping of the previously adopted model. Considering the case of a Mobile Middleware Technology Provider (MMTP), the study assesses how the market fluidity impacts on a firm’s approach towards business modeling, by comparing the business model designed right before the company’s market entry, to the one present after two years of activity within the industry. Employing the longitudinal single case study methodology, the research identifies which are the most critical choices to be made at a business modeling level for a MMTP, and shows how these parameters can be combined to constitute a thorough configuration; afterwards, a comparison is carried out between the initial and the current business models adopted, so to identify any change in the parameters prioritization and in the approach towards business modeling as a whole. The research findings allow to provide a business model parameters reference model for MMTPs. Moreover, the longitudinal comparison makes evident that not only the market’s characteristics, but also the initial strategic approach towards the new business, strongly affect the firm’s business model definition process
B2e Mobile Internet: an Exploratory Study of Italian Applications
Purpose – The paper presents an exploratory study to investigate the impact of B2e MI applications
and, in particular, an empirical analysis of the main features of Italian B2e MI applications for
automating sales- and field-force activities.
Design/methodology/approach – The study has been carried out with 16 case studies of B2e MI
applications employed in different Italian companies.
Findings – The paper describes the main features and impacts of the applications, showing how the
network is utilized, how the device and the usage mode (online or offline) affect these applications and
indicating the major opportunities for improvement.
Practical implications – Some indications for management regarding B2e mobile applications are
the need: to develop simple applications; and to start mobilizing the sales-force, because this provides
faster pay-back and easiest implementation.
Originality/value – The paper provides material to illustrate the current situation and serve as a
starting point for scientific analysis. Findings regarding the use of mobile phones and mobile networks
as compared to fixed-line solutions are presented and explained. Differences in the use patterns of the
applications are also discussed with real case example
