Does the Current Account Matter?
No full textThe purpose of this paper is to investigate in detail the behavior of the current account in emerging economies, and in particular its role if any in financial crises. Models of current account behavior are reviewed, and a dynamic model of current account sustainability is developed. The empirical analysis is based on a massive data set that covers over 120 countries during more than 25 years. Important controversies related to the current account including the extent to which current account deficits help predict currency crises are also analyzed. Throughout the paper I am interested in analyzing whether there is evidence supporting the idea that there are costs involved in running 'very large' deficits. Moreover, I investigate the nature of these potential costs, including whether they are particularly high in the presence of other type of imbalances.

Groundwater availability modeling: Northern segment of the Edwards Aquifer, Texas
No full textThe northern segment of the Edwards aquifer covers an area that includes some of the fastest growing counties in Texas. As a result of rapid population growth, demand for water in this region is also rising. A groundwater availability model simulating flow through this segment of the Edwards aquifer was constructed as a groundwater resource management tool. The purpose of this tool is to aid groundwater conservation districts, regional water planning groups, and others in evaluating groundwater resource management strategies to meet projected groundwater demands. This model was constructed by calibrating to steady-state conditions for 1980 and historical transient conditions for the period 1980-2000. The calibrated model can be used to predict future water-level changes that may result from projected pumping rates and/or climatic conditions. The model results indicate that (1) no historical regional-scale cones-of-depression exist in the northern Edwards aquifer, (2) 60-80 percent of natural discharge is baseflow to perennial streams that cross the aquifer outcrop, (3) pumping is less than 20 percent of total discharge, (4) the flow system is more active in the unconfined part of the aquifer than in downdip portions, and (5) gradual long-term water-level decline is occurring in the Pflugerville-Georgetown area. Historical pumping trends indicate steadily increasing municipal, rural domestic, and industrial pumping, rising from 20,000 to 30,000 acre-feet/year over the past 20 years. Regional-scale drawdown associated with increasing pumping has not been observed, so far, largely because pumping is a relatively small portion of the total water budget of this segment of the Edwards aquifer. This species is widely distributed in Europe, being found from Ireland (Ashe & O’Connor 1989), Great Britain (Edwards 1921) and Spain (Dahl et al. 2002) to European part of Russia (Petrašiūnas & Paramonov 2013) and further east to Japan (Nakamura (2014) as well as the specimens collected by T. Nakamura and donated to the senior author of this report, stored in MZVU) and Korea (the present study). Effect of heat treatment on small scale fragmentation of aluminium alloy
No full textSmall scale explosions, using a detonator, of 7075 aluminium alloy cylinders,
15-100 mm outside diameter, were carried out to investigate the effects of heat
treatment on fragmentation. This was the finest for the strongest as received
alloy and coarsest for the softest overaged alloy. This effect was similar to
that seen in investigations of the fragmentation of steel. Cylinders of 50 and
100 mm in diameter did not fragment but plastically deformed with maximum
deformation at the cylinder bottom. Fragmentation of 33 and 42 mm diameter
cylinders produced long fragments typical of the break-up of thick walled
cylinders. At smaller diameters, break-up gave fragments of several shapes,
finer fragments being largely associated with the smallest diameter cylinders
and the highest strength alloys. Results followed those seen in large scale
studies of cylinder break-up and suggest the possibility of using small scale
fragmentation experiments in the investigation of the effects of composition,
heat treatment and processing on natural fragmentation

Edwards fut d\u27ailleurs le premier bibliothécaire de la bibliothèque publique de Manchester. L\u27objectif de son livre est de servir de manuel quant à l\u27organisation de ce type de bibliothèque et de promouvoir celui-ci plus largement. Dans un second temps, il vise à comparer les différents systèmes mis en place dans quelques pays étrangers, spécialement la France, l\u27Allemagne et les États-Unis. Composé de quatre livres, l\u27ouvrage offre une étude comparative des diverses expériences menées et s\u27appuie sur les textes législatifs, notamment en ce qui concerne la Grande-Bretagne. Cette oeuvre est fondamentale pour l\u27historien s\u27intéressant au développement des bibliothèques publiques au XIXe siècle. Elle est complétée par de précieuses notices sur les grands collectionneurs européens et américains (qui forment le quatrième livre)
