Twa Fryske gedichten fan Albert ten Broecke Hoekstra
In this article I publish two Frisian poems by the Frisian scholar Albert tenBroecke Hoekstra (1765-1828), of which the former has been publishedbefore but with errors, while the latter is published for the first time. Bothpoems, from 1815 and 1817, are welcome additions to the trickle ofFrisian literature of the period. They also afford us a glance at the poeticskills of the author and the reason for which he wrote them
The Baby and the Bath Water
UrbanismArchitecture and The Built Environmen

Young People’s Housing Opportunity in Post-reform China
The inquiry that has culminated in this thesis was inspired by the challenges that many young Chinese people were facing when trying to gain access to affordable housing at the time of study, the early 2010s. By then, more than thirty years of housing reforms had completely changed how housing was being provided in China. The resulting structure had led young people to access housing in ways that were very different from those of their parents’ generation (Deng, Hoekstra & Elsinga, 2017). These observations prompted the following research question: What are the key factors defining young people’s opportunity to access housing, and how do these factors relate to China’s institutional changes during and after the market reform? The ensuing research has demonstrated that parental resources and intergenerational reciprocity are indispensable to the housing opportunity of young people, as home ownership has come to mediate the exchange of resources between...A+BE | Architecture and the Built Environment No 22 (2018)OLD Housing System

The Effect of Own-Gender Juries on Conviction Rates
PublicFinanceThe right to an impartial jury is the cornerstone of the U.S. justice system and is enshrined in the Bill of Rights, but are these juries truly impartial, or do they favor defendants who are similar to themselves? In PERC working paper 1803, PERCs Rex Grey Professor Mark Hoekstra and co-author Brittany Street study whether gender matches between jurors and defendants affect criminal conviction rates using administrative data on the juror selection process and trial proceedings for two large counties in Florida. Findings show that own-gender juries result in significantly lower conviction rates on drug charges, though no evidence of effects were found for other charges. Estimates indicate that a one standard deviation increase in expected own-gender jurors (and estimated 10 percentage points) results in a 19 percentage point reduction in conviction rates on drug charges and a 13 percentage point decline in the likelihood of being sentenced to at least some jail time
