    Managing the boundary of an 'open' project

    In the past ten years, the boundaries between public and open science and commercial research efforts have become more porous. Scholars have thus more critically examined ways in which these two institutional regimes intersect. Large open source software projects have also attracted commercial collaborators and now struggle to develop code in an open public environment that still protects their communal boundaries. This research applies a dynamic social network approach to understand how one community-managed software project, Debian, developed a membership process. We examine the project's face-to-face social network over a five-year period (1997-2001) to see how changes in the social structure affected the evolution of membership mechanisms and the determination of gatekeepers. While the amount and importance of a contributor's work increased the probability that a contributor would become a gatekeeper, those more central in the social network were more likely to become gatekeepers and influence the membership process. A greater understanding of the mechanisms open projects use to manage their boundaries has critical implications for research and knowledge-producing communities operating in pluralistic, open and distributed environments.open source software; social networks; organizational design; institutional design;

    Knowledge Spillover on Complex Networks

    Most growth theories have focused on R&D activities. Although R&D significantly influences economic growth, the spillover effect also has a considerable influence. In this paper, we study knowledge spillover among agents by representing it as network structures. The objective of this study is to construct a framework to treat knowledge spillover as a network. We introduce a knowledge spillover equation, solve it analytically to find a workable solution. It has mainly three properties: (1) the growth rate is common for all the agents only if they are linked to the entire network regardless of degrees, (2) the TFP level is proportional to degree, and (3) the growth rate is determined by the underlying network structure. We compare growth rate among representative networks: regular, random, and scale-free networks, and find the growth rate is the greatest in scale-free network. We apply this framework, i.e., knowledge spill over equation, to the problem of firms forming a network endogenously and show how distance and region size affect the economic growth. We also apply the framework to network formation mechanism. The aim of our paper is not just showing results, but in constructing a framework to study spillover by network.

    Rhodes, GreeceAlbert was born November 10, 1914 to immigrant parents Rosa Boullissa and Marco Franco of the Island of Rhodes. He attended Leschi Elementary, Garfield High School and graduated from the University of Washington and University of Washington Law School Class of 1939. He served in the US Army Intelligence Corps. Returning to Seattle, he became a founding partner of the law firm Franco, Asia, Bensussen and Coe, and practiced immigration and business law, also serving as the representative of the Mexican Embassy in the Northwest. Albert was an early civil rights advocate, and helped author King County's Civil Rights Ordinance. He also served on the King County Human Rights Commission. A strong philanthropic supporter of the Jewish Community and United Way, Albert was past president of the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle and was active in the Anti-Defamation League, the American Civil Liberties Union and the American Jewish Committee. In this interview Mr. Franco discusses the lawsuit of Eugene Levy vs. Jewish Family and Child Service (JFCS) of 1948. The Bucky family emigrated to the United States of America in 1923, settling in New York City.     The aim of this paper is to understand the interactions between productive effort and the creation of synergies that are the sources of technological collaboration agreements, agglomeration, social stratification, etc. We model this interaction in a way that allows us to characterize how agents devote resources to both activities. This permits a fullfledged equilibrium/welfare analysis of network formation with endogenous investment efforts and to derive unambiguous comparative statics results. In spite of its parsimony that ensures tractability, the model retains enough richness to replicate a (relatively) broad range of empirical regularities displayed by social and economic networks, and is directly estimable to recover is structural parameters.

He experienced discrimination by his fellow Jews when no Sephardic student could join a Jewish fraternity or sorority. This interview gives illuminating insights concerning the history of an early day Sephardic family and how a child who grew up in that era reacted as shown in his community work as as adult. His account of his father, Marco Franco, as a liaison between the various segments in the community is interesting.
