The work consists of an edition, translation and commentary of a collection of jurisprudential cases from the Byzantine era. The publication of the two volumes, edited by Dieter Simon and Diether Roderich Reinsch, created an opportunity for discussion and dialogue on various topics pertaining to Byzantine law, for which the Peira is an important source of knowledge

No full textKritobulos of Imbros, the author of a historical work covering the period from 1451 to 1467, describes the deeds of the Sultan Mehmed Fatih. The work written between 1465 and 1467 is an autograph of the author. Apart from a knowledge of literature (Thucydides), one can discern in this work a definite interest in medicine. K. was sultan's governor of Imbros for almost ten years. At the same time he was a patriot in the sense that he expressed solidarity with the unfortunate inhabitants of Constantinople

No full text Diether Roderich Reinch Τα παραθέματα στην Ἀλεξιάδα της Άννας ΚομνηνήςΤα τελευταία χρόνια η μελέτη των παραθεμάτων έχει δείξει την ανάγκη απεμπλοκής από την απλή ένδειξη των φιλολογικών παραλλήλων στο υπόμνημα πηγών, όπως αυτό παρατίθεται στις κριτικές εκδόσεις βυζαντινών κειμένων. Η ανάλυση παραθεμάτων από τον Όμηρο και την Καινή Διαθήκη που χρησιμοποιούνται από την Άννα Κομνηνή στην Ἀλεξιάδα υποδεικνύει ότι η συγγραφεύς χειρίζεται ελεύθερα τις πηγές της διασκευάζοντας, παραφράζοντας και προσαρμόζοντάς τις ανάλογα με τις αφηγηματικές ανάγκες του κειμένου της. Οι αποκλίσεις, επομένως, από το αυθεντικό κείμενο δεν μαρτυρούν σύγχυση, αλλά συνειδητή επεξεργασία. the readers/listeners of his Chronographia. The intended readers are, in
addition to Constantine Leichoudes and Emperor Michael VII which he addresses
directly, the educated people at and around the imperial court. Psellos deals
with his story in full command as a sovereign author and by many remarks
which guide the readers. It is set out how the six provable real readers of
the Chronographia (Michael Attaleiates, Skylitzes Continuatus, Nikephoros
Bryennios, Anna Komnene, Ioannes Zonaras and Michael Choniates) have made use
of the text

No full textMichael Psellos’ Chronographia as Oral Prose. Until now only Herbert Hunger and Warren Treadgold had pointed out that Michael Psellos has his Chronographia not written by his own hand but dictated to a professional scribe. Therefore also the structure of this work clearly has an oral character: many references back and forward, transition formulas, dialogues instead of orations. All this corresponds to its almost entirely oral sources and its aural reception. Psellos thinks of the recipients of the Chronographia not als readers but as listeners, may it be in a public θε?ατρον or privately, of course always read out loudly
