It's easy to believe that the rich and famous are born well...rich and famous. Not so! On the way to being famous...Gwen Stefani worked at Dairy Queen, Madonna was fired from Dunkin' Donuts, Brad Pitt handed out flyers wearing a chicken suit for El Polio Loco, Rachel McAdams was a server at McDonald's and Beyonce was swept up hair in her mother's salon. There are jobs you will have before you 'make it' too. Some you will enjoy. And some - not so much. On my way to becoming a teacher I was a waiter, a landscaper, a tree planter, and a bartender. Some of these jobs I liked and some I hated. But ALL of these jobs brought me to the profession I love and shaped who I have become. At W.R. Myers High School we are proud of being a school where every student can find an avenue for success and in being part of a community where everyone in the Rebel family strives to find the best in themselves and others. As Christian Larson said, "Believe in yourself and all that you are. Know that there is something inside you that is greater than any obstacle." I chose "REBEL RESILIENCE" as the yearbook theme this year as I thought it was rather fitting given our current 'COVID-1 9' situation. Some of you are already VERY RESILIENT, while others may feel like you are not. One thing is for sure - you can always WORK on becoming MORE resilient. Here are 10 ways you can work on becoming more resilient: Have the courage to be imperfect Take time for yourself Sign up for that course, join that club Be active every day in as many ways as you can Spend time with people who make you feel good Laugh out loud each day Invite your neighbor (friend) over for a cup of tea (chat) Do one thing now that you've been putting off Focus more on things you can control Remember, this too shall pass (~https://wayahead.org.au/get-the-facts/building-resilience/) Thank you to all those who gave me a big smile (or at least didn't run away) when I put the camera in front of your face! I apologize to those teams I missed getting photos of (that actually had the opportunity to play). Because this year is unlike any other, I also decided to change up the color scheme from the traditional red/black/yellow! I would love some feedback on this decision (love it/dislike it etc). A huge shout-out to a stellar group of grade 9's who helped me with the yearbook in June (Madisen and Bryden O'Connor, Kiernan Gyepesi, Will Evanson, Madison Reid, Heston Bevans and Allen Clements). Thank you specifically to Bryden O'Connor for creating the color graphic used throughout the yearbook. Some of the quotes found through out the yearbook were from the survey you filled out in the spring, which in, most cases, does not have the author information and therefore simply states the grade level the quote came from. All other quotes with Author Unknown" were found online and in most cases didn't have any author information either. In any case, my hope is that they will either put a smile on your face, make you go 'hmm' or possibly even take time to pause and reflect on the message being shared. But very thankfully, and in true Rebel Spirit, we made the most of the situation and were able to organize and provide our student-athletes with a few opportunities to participate in sport. The Rebels made teams and practiced as much as they possibly could in football, volleyball, cross-country, golf, basketball, and curling. Unfortunately, a few of our traditional sports were not able to get off the ground in the Spring, but hopefully that will only fuel the fire of the up and coming athletes for next season! We want to give a big thanks to all those student-athletes and coaches who committed to one or more of our teams during these tough, unprecedented circumstances, and a special shout out to all the Grade 1 2 student-athletes for all of their years of dedication to High School Sport! Myers Concert and Stage Bands were unable to perform this year due to COVID, but we were lucky enough to still be able to play our instruments. Vince Gassi, a composer from Toronto, was commissioned by the W.R. Myers Band Parent Association to write a piece for the Concert Band. The band students met with Mr. Gassi via Zoom in October to talk to him about the piece and the writing process. He completed the piece for us in January and we began working on it. Again the band students met with Mr. Gassi on Zoom for him to listen to us play and give feedback. But unfortunately due to the COVID restrictions, we were unable to premier the piece. Hopefully, next year we will be able to play Tomorrow Shines Soon. The Minister's Youth Council consists of 40 junior and senior high school students (in Alberta) all of which have many diverse interests, perspectives, and backgrounds. Students get the opportunity to share their perspectives on many different topics in education. Over the last couple of years students on this council have worked with the Alberta Government Education Department, MLA's, industry professionals, teachers and school boards to help better education in out province. Specifically, these students helped inform a vaping policy from Edmonton Public Schools, assisted in the creation of Bill 1 9 which aims to reduce vaping use in Alberta and helped shape the Ministerial Order on Student Learning. ^ef Keira1' created all of these masterpieces during 'Round 1' of Covid shutdown. That qualified Sayge to go to the National High School Rodeo Finals 2021 in Lincoln, Nebraska. Way to go Sayge!! Kayce Liptak has also had a great showing this year so far. She placed 2nd at Provincials, just behind Sayce Turcato. This meant that she also qualified to go to the National High School Rodeo Finals 2021 in Lincoln, Nebraska. 5ft Looks like Blaze Hansen could give us all a few lessons in surf technique!! Abby and Brennan Abela - both experienced Taekwondoin's. Colby Garner - playing Junior A hockey with the Sherwood Park Crusaders. The Taber Thrashers get a season after all! With vaccinate numbers up and COVID cases dropping substantially after a short shutdown the Lacrosse league got the green light to play. And play they did! If you enjoy watching playing a high-intensity, high-contact sport, then this is a game for you! With the Lacrosse league in its infancy in ^ber (this is just the second season of play) the team did a stellar job working on basic skills, learning plays, and Alling as a team unit. They definitely had their ups and downs where the scoreboard was concerned. Travel Club has returned from New York! This Easter sixteen of us travelled to New York, staying right in Times Square and seeing as many sights and shows as we could within the time we were there! We saw two Broadway shows, took part in an Improv workshop with an award winning Broadway actor, and conquered the NY subway!! We took a ferry out to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, visited the 9/1 1 Memorial museum, visited Lincoln Center, Juliard School of Arts, the MET opera house as well as taking a fast elevator ride to the top of the Empire State building!!! We shopped, and shopped, then shopped some more! It was an absolutely amazing experience with some fantastic students and parents!! 1 .Tour of Wall Street. 2 .Walking across Brooklyn Bridge. He became one of the greatest statesmen in world history. Churchill reached the height of his fame as the heroic prime minister of Great Britain during World War II. Churchill was also a noted speaker, author, painter, soldier, and war reporter. Sir Winston Churchill's personal courage, the magic of his words, and his faith in victory inspired the British to "their finest hour. " The mere sight of this stocky, determined man - a cigar in his mouth and two fingers raised high in a "V for victory" salute - cheered the people. Churchill not only made history, he also wrote it. As a historian, war reporter, and biographer, he showed a matchless command of the English language. In 1953, he won the Nobel prize for literature. Churchill entered the service of his country in 1895 as an army lieutenant under Queen Victoria. He ended his career in 1964 as a member of the House of Commons under Queen Elizabeth II, the great-great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria. Few men ever served their country so long or so well. In a few weeks time I shall be entering the Provincial Superintendency and leaving Taber for what is still an unknown destination. Wherever we go we shall consider ourselves extremely fortunate to find a home as happy as the one we are leaving, to find a community as friendly as Taber, and to find schools developing as rapidly as W.R. Myers. During the two years I have been here I have often heard remarks to the effect that big schools like ours lose the personal touch of smaller centres and therefore are bound to have a lesser degree of success. But you know, this is nonsense. Of course we cannot get to know one another as well as in much smaller schools, but this is a minor disadvantage when compared to the many great advantages our school offers its students and its teachers. What are these advantages? First there’s the quality of the teaching. Most teachers prefer to specialize and in our school they can do this. Secondly there is the question of physical plant and equipment. How far superior are our facilities than those of smaller centres! Thirdly there is the matter of the wide and varied programme. Only in the major cities can students have a more varied programme than ours, and this means that practically every student obtains a grade XII diploma in one subject field or another. There can be no doubt whatever that the students at W. R. Myers have greater opportunity and greater chance of success than any students in smaller schools, and each year the opportunities and the possibilities of success are increased. Next year Mr. George will take over the principalship. I know he will do a fine job and I know the staff and students will give him every support. I wish him every success and I know that he will find, as I have, a great deal of personal satisfaction in guiding W. R. Myers on its road to becoming a bigger and better school. I have one final word of advice to all. It is time to stop talking about the problems we have had, the lack of spirit we once showed, the poor morale we used to display. Those days are gone for Myers. The future is brighter and more promising than ever before. We must think positively and the ghosts of problems-past will no longer haunt us. Myers High School, and the whole of the North American continent is mourning the needless death in Alabama of a Boston clergyman. h You may be wondering who two obviously unrelated events have apparently been linked together. If your c curiosity has been roused then read on. You may yet see that there is, in fact, a connection. tl o The study of chemistry is full of many fascinations. Chemicals are wonderful things. They fuel our engines sc clothe our backs, improve our farms, and fight our diseases. You name it—chemicals do it! Chemicals are all around you----- in fact chemicals ARE you. Your origins were two cells made of chemicals arranged variously into patterns called genes and chromosomes. You had no say in how these patterns were formed, neither could w your parents control them; yet in an instant of time they decided whether you would be short or tall, stout or thin, blue-eyed or brown-eyed, of high intelligence or not so high, white-skinned or black-skinned. It would be very strange if the tall people in W. R. Myers school dissociated themselves from the short people or the blue-eyed from the brown-eyed. It would be made disturbing if the suggestion was ever made that one group was worthier than the other. This would be generic prejudice, the product of ignorance. It is easy for us in Canada to malign our southern neighbours for such behavior, but we must not forget that behind the gene of skin colour are many differences of culture, established and perpetuated by generations. Recognizing this, it would be foolish to allow a new cult to develop in our own midst—the cult of intelligence, based as it is on similar chemical factors. Teachers have been criticized for placing too much importance on intelligence, but other public groups are more to blame. A world wide club exists membership of which is open to persons of very high I. Q. only; parents have been known to regard high I.Q. 's in their children as the latest status symbol; and, alas, some students in our own school, who see themselves as "smarter,” have adopted lordly attitudes over their classmates. Such self- glorification must surely breed prejudice. It is high time that the whole question of intelligence and worth be viewed in clearer perspective. Intelligence alone will not guarantee a free pass to a worthwhile life. There is the story of the student who was smart enough of mind to realize that by acting stupidly he would not be expected to produce at school. It was only after he "dropped-out" that he realized that undisciplined smartness produced little more than unemployment. Real smartness is knowing our own capabilities and working towards their realization. This smartness of personality is the key to the worthy life; it is not an accident of birth, but the sum total of every word we have ever heard, sight we have ever seen, and thought that has ever crossed our mind. It is something which develops continuously through life, and which is nurtured by good habits especially during the formative early years. Here we find the main reason for the existence of schools and compulsory education: to make available to all the benefits of a stimulating environment where personalities can develop. With the right personality behind it there will be a satisfying place in the world for any ability be it low or high. Let us "look to the ant” as Socrates advised his students thousands of years ago. Man will always be more capable than ants, but we can gain by studying the selfless purposefulness in their every activity which allows them to perform amazing feats, for the benefit of the whole colony. Ants are never idle, but faithfully carry out their assigned tasks according to their various specializations. Not all can be queens; some are soldiers; some are workers; but all are worthy because they know their purpose and dedicate themselves to its achievement. School can help you to know yourselves and to appreciate others, to identify yourselves with realistic and worthwhile goals, and to strive for these goals to your own satisfaction and for the good of your total society. S. ^akdktorg ^Message Madame Chairman, honored guests, parents, and fellow students: Graduation is a word that has several connotations or meanings. Each person thinks of graduation in different terms. To the student, graduation is a time of celebration, now that he is truly on his own in the adult world. He is also apprehensive of the future, not knowing what lies ahead. The parents are proud-- proud that their child, who started school only yesterday (so it seems), has achieved this momentous step in his life. With this proudness, the parents feel a little remorse and have a few misgivings about their child now having the chance to make his own in life. Teachers are happy at graduation--happy that we students finally made it out of Grade Twelve. The twelve years of schooling before graduation have been compared to the climbing of a previously unconquered mountain, to the arduous plight of a small boat which eventually reaches harbor after being caught in a storm at sea, and to the journey of an explorer, who, following years of diligent search, finally attains his goal. Graduation is all these and more. Each graduate has a different concept of graduation. But they all have one thing in common; namely, each encountered snares and pitfalls as he struggled toward his goal--graduation. Tonight marks the leaving of a familiar way of life and heralds the beginning of a new way of life. During the first years of our lives, our teachers and parents have bravely attempted to instill some knowledge in us, the students. They realized the importance of our school years, for upon them depends the future. We students ofte fail to realize this until it is too late. Graduation is only the first small hill in a range of goals, tasks, and achievements. The hills will become mountains with steeper slopes and wider precipices. But these obstacles ol the adult world need not be feared; we have only to apply the skills of learning and reasoning garnered in the pas twelve years to find a solution to these problems. Not every oneofuswillbean Einstein or a Rockefeller, but we graduates must endeavour to make somethin! of ourselves according to our individual abilities. Never has a generation had so much to look forward to, to anticipate. These anticipations will only be realized if we, tomorrow's society, make it so. Herein lies our responsibility to man and to God. We may fail in fulfilling some of our goals and responsibilities. But the values of life should not be measured by material success. If we have done our best in an honest and truthful manner, we need not be ashamed of our failures. Tomorrow we take our place in the world where we must either learn and work by ourselves or fail. Life is now our school; may it be as happy and rewarding an experience as our school years have been. Ron Friesen Valedictorian ^ardxtcll— The pupils and teachers of W.R. Myers High School were very distressed recently, to learn of Mr. Jepson's departure from Taber at the end of the present school term. In the two years that Mr. Jepson was with us, he advanced the status and well-being of pupils and teachers alike. His wise counsel, sound judgment, keen insight and delightful sense of humor instilled a sense of confidence and purpose in the entire school. Never was morale as high as during his principalship! Mr. Jepson came to us from Cold Lake, Alberta where he was vice-principal and principal for five years. He took most of his schooling in Manchester, England which accounts for most of his old world charm. He is quite fluent in French and Spanish among many other personal accomplishments. It is with a sincere sense of loss that we wish Mr. and Mrs. Jepson happiness and success in the former's new position as Superintendent with the Department of Education. The influence of intertidal mudflats on the dissolved inorganic carbon and total alkalinity distribution in the German Bight, southeastern North Sea

The distribution of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and total alkalinity (TA) in the German Bight, southeastern North Sea, was investigated during winter (February/March) 1996. Generally, high biological activity and riverine input dominate the carbon chemistry of this area for most of the year and mask impacts of other processes. During the investigation period, the presence of extended ice sheets, low river discharge and minimal primary productivity in the German Bight allowed the recognition of a considerable influence from sediment–water interaction. Water masses in front of the North Frisian Wadden Sea were clearly distinguished from others by considerably higher DIC and TA concentrations and a different DIC : TA ratio. We suggest that remineralisation products of Wadden Sea sediments and the DIC- and TA-enriched porewaters were subsequently released into the water column by enhanced erosion due to ice drift. The DIC : TA ratio of 1 : 1 indicates that either sulphate reduction or a combination of carbonate dissolution and aerobic remineralisation were the main processes generating this DIC. The calculated amount of DIC delivered from the Wadden Sea to the German Bight of about 10,000 t (equivalent to 76 mmol m−2 d−1) was in the same order of magnitude as the riverine input and about ten times higher than by diffusion alone. Apparently, for the carbon cycling in the coastal waters, sediment–water interaction may be a relevant process

Named after Dr. Cleveland Hickman, Jr., who graciously invited the first author to the Galápagos, and collected the first specimens of this new species. Noun in the genitive case. Material examined. Type locality: Ecuador, Galapagos: Floreana I., La Batielle, 1.2904°S 90.4989°W. Holotype: Specimen number MHNG-INVE-67495. Colony of approximately 40 polyps connected by well-developed coenenchyme on two branches of Antipathes galapagensis Diechmann, 1941 branches. Both branches approximately 7 cm long. Polyps approximately 1.5–4.0 mm in diameter, and approximately 1.0–6.0 mm in height from coenenchyme. Coenenchyme covers branches of antipatharian. Polyps and coenenchyme sand encrusted, cream-yellow in color. Collected from La Batielle, Floreana I., Galapagos, Ecuador, at 31.4 m by A. Chiriboga (AC), March 13, 2007. Preserved in 99.5% ethanol. Sequences. See Table 1. Description. Size: Polyps in situ approximately 4–12 mm in diameter when open, and approximately 4–15 mm in height. Morphology: Antipathozoanthus hickmani has approximately 40 bright yellow and/ or red tentacles, with long red, yellow, or cream-colored polyps that extend well clear of the coenenchyme (Figure 1). Tentacles are almost always longer than the expanded oral disk diameter. Cnidae: Basitrichs and microbasic p-mastigophores (often difficult to distinguish), holotrichs (large and medium), spirocysts (see Table 2, Figure 9). Table &lcedil;. Differential diagnosis. Differs from Antipathozoanthus macaronesicus (Ocaña & Brito, 2004) (with regards to distribution; Galapagos as opposed to Cape Verde), coloration (no red or cream colors observed in A. macaronesicus), substrate (Antipathes galapagensis as opposed to Tanacetipathes cavernicola Opresko, 2001). Other morphologically similar and undescribed zoanthids (epizoic on antipatharians, similar sizes, yellowish in color) have been recorded from Madagascar and Japan (specimens in JDR’s collection), although these other specimens were found on different antipatharian species than Antipathozoanthus hickmani, and were never red or cream in color. Antipathozoanthus hickmani is the only zoanthid in the Galápagos found on living Antipathes galapagensis (Table 3). Habitat and distribution. All collected samples from Galapagos were on the black coral Antipathes galapagensis, at depths of 12 m to 35 m. Although A. galapagensis is found throughout the archipelago, Antipathozoanthus hickmani colonies were observed only at Santiago, Floreana, Isabela and Pinzon Islands, and it may be that this genus has a patchy distribution in the Galápagos. A. hickmani is potentially also found at Isla del Coco (Costa Rica) on the same antipatharian species, based on Museo de Zoologia, University of Costa Rica specimen UCR 827, although this has yet to be confirmed with detailed examinations. Biology and associated species. Antipathozoanthus hickmani may cover only a portion of a living Antipathes galapagensis black coral colony, or cover the entire colony, suggesting this species may be parasitic. Some A. hickmani specimens were found on completely dead A. galapagensis colonies or branches. Notes. Previously mentioned in Reimer et al. (2008b, 2010) and Hickman (2008) as Parazoanthus sp. He is the author of many books, including the bestseller Nudge: Improving Decisions about Health, Wealth, and Happiness (with Richard H. Thaler). His 2016 book The World According to Star Wars attempts to understand the Star Wars universe in ten chapters through the lenses of Sunstein’s academic interests, namely: culture, sociology, psychology, behavioral science, and political science. The book is both personal and theoretical, practical and academic. It takes accurate measure of the genesis of the movies, the movies themselves, and briefly, but trenchantly, it examines concepts such as reputational cascades and speculates on what Star Wars can teach viewers about constitutional disputes

Myers High School Cap and Gown Ceremonies of 2014! I can’t believe how fast the year went, that I am once again standing in front of our graduating class - you are looking fine! I am happy that you are having this moment. I can’t believe the weather! Generally, on graduation day, our only complaint is that it is too hot - especially for the boys in their handsome suits later in the afternoon. Boys - we have good news ... Last Saturday, I was cleaning out the closet in my daughter’s room - and that, by the way, should be a job for someone who has done something desperately wrong and is being punished for some act! Anyway, we decided to take a break - go for a walk. It was snowing! The toques came out, the mitts should have come out - so, if we look on the up side of things, it is not snowing today! For the last two weeks or so, if I ran into someone and they know that I am connected to Myers, there was generally a comment along the line of, “Grad is coming up soon.” And so it was on Tuesday, as I took the kids for an evening haircut, that I ran into a dear friend. I was commenting that I had not yet written my speech for grad and that really all I want for the kids is for them to be happy and well. How do you turn that into a speech? And that truly is, speaking on behalf of the staff of W.R. Myers High School, our wish for you - be happy and be well. Now, if being happy and being well simply happened on their own, then I could just take my seat and wish everyone an outstanding day. That is not the case. It seems like everything takes at least a bit of work, and even something as seemingly simple as being happy and well, requires thought, time and attention. You have many journeys ahead of you - hopefully most will be joyful and exciting and some may, will be, difficult. Though it all, know yourself, treat yourself well and never sell yourself short - that would be such a shame. You know, and I know, that were Brett here today, and maybe he is, he would want only the very best for you - he would look at you with that convincing smile, that twinkle in his eye, maybe tilt his head a bit - and want you to be happy and well. Brett sat right in front of me in LA enrichment, probably because of his hearing he sat in the front in a lot of his classes, and I remember that look very well - usually there was a touch of mischief in there as well. I hope that you, our graduates, feel well-prepared to plan and navigate the next step of your journey. I hope that you will carry forward moments of pride, struggles that have turned into accomplishments, memories of giggles and giddiness, friendships and true and genuine value of who you are and all you contribute. I hope you remember, always, how important you are - to your family, to your friends and to yourself - there is tremendous value in you. And because of that you are wished a lifetime of being happy and well - of discovering and nurturing your talents, of committing to work or study that is meaningful to you, enjoying the moments as they present themselves, of loving and being loved. To all the parents today - how are you doing? Another milestone! I was at my daughter’s kindergarten Mother’s Day Tea on Wednesday - same daughter with the messy room! The tea was beautiful! Mrs. Anderson was kind enough to put together a video of moments throughout the kindergarten year - and the really good thing was that I found out I was not the only sap out there - the rest of the Moms were crying too, as we watched this video capture the moments of fun and growing up for our children. And I thought about you - the parents of our grade 12s - and the love you have for your children, the insane pride we have as parents and the bumps, hugs and hoorays along the way. I hope that you too enjoy this moment. Thank you so much for all you have done for your children along the way - kids need their parents and they could not have done it without you. And, Happy Mother’s Day! I want to end with one more story. Last Friday afternoon, I took some time to make sure I actually had something nice to wear for today. After shopping, I ran into a former parent and get an update on two of his children and a nephew as well (Jance, Alex and Tom are all doing well!) - we chat for a minute and continue on. Then I go to confirm my hair appointment for this morning - the kids that spend 200 days with me know that hair is not a big priority. Anyway, I run into Jenny Meyer and say to her, “Hey, your Mom was able to find something pretty for me to wear and now I am getting my hair - I’m set.” Without missing a beat, Jenny said, “This town will take care of you.” This town will take care of you - that is what we call home! Remember that you have a home, that you are valued in this community and your hometown, as represented by everyone who made it a priority to be here today, stands behind you, wanting you to be happy and well. Whether your next step takes you down the street, across the globe or somewhere in between (like PEI), please know that this is your home, you will always be Myers alumni and that we will always wish you well. As is customary, my final task is to introduce the class valedictorian. This year’s valedictorian has been a quiet and unassuming student, someone who goes about the work with a great deal of diligence and helpful curiousity. Over the four curiosityyers, there has been a consistent display of the most pleasant manners and the presence of a warm smile. And if you talk about farming, he really lights up! Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome our valedictorian for the Class of 2014 - Ben Noble.^O J ^ l/a/ee&iforfan Ben Noble Good morning, well I’m glad that everyone was able to find the l-Rena. That’s exactly how we want to start Grad off with, 1000 tickets with arena spelt wrong. Right now all my teachers are going “Oh Ben, people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones!” And they are right; I have no room to talk about spelling mistakes. In fact when my elementary school teachers find out that I am the valedictorian they will probably say “Well he must have finally learned how to spell!” The fact is I’m still working on that one! We learned a great deal since that start of our education 13 years ago, it is hard to fathom that we started out in kindergarten sitting on the floor learning that glue was not edible, I’m pretty sure Cole Nakamura learned that the hard way, and we began to slowly progress through the school hierarchy. We went from top dogs, to the bottom of the pile when we transferred to middle school. It was at middle school that many of us had our first slow dance and learned that the opposite gender was not really all that bad. We also learned that you can actually make too many posters. We looked on at the High school kids desiring to be more like them, thinking that they knew exactly what was going on. Then we became the high school kids and we learned that we were wrong, we didn’t actually have everything figured out automatically. In high school we learned the significance of a driver’s licence and the friends that it brought. We learned so very much at school, whether it was academic or life lessons, we always learned something new. And it was due to our teachers that we learned anything at all. I think that I speak for everyone when I say thank you to our teachers. I would personally like to thank the staff at W.R. Myers for your incredible dedication, and your commitment to your student’s education. Additionally I would like to thank you for your guidance, your friendship and the role you have played in our lives. Most importantly, I would like to thank our parents for their support, their tol§rance and their understanding; it cannot be easy to raise a teenager. Without parents and teachers, none of us would be who we are today, and none of us would be where we are today. I am honored to be chosen as your valedictorian, but it is also a great responsibility because I feel that I have the obligation to say something meaningful on the day that marks our transition from children to adults. Things are going to drastically change when June arrives, we are all aware of the challenges that we will face as we head out on our separate ways. Life will not always be simple or perfect; our class knows this better than most. It is with heavy hearts that we acknowledge one of us is not present today, and that person is Brett Forchuk, I do however believe that you would all agree that he is certainly with us today in spirit. Today is significant because it indicates that we are about to set out on diverging paths. Edmund Hillary once said that “It is not the mountain we conquer, but rather ourselves.” What he means by this quote is that when one sets out to accomplish a goal, it is not the physical obstacles we face that impede our success, but rather the limitations we place upon ourselves. Like climbing a mountain, life is going to require skills, tools and companions to achieve success. Before you are able to climb a mountain you must first educate yourself on the topography, and the climate of the mountain, you will need to train long before you are able to attempt to climb. You will need people to travel with, people who you are able to trust and depend on, this being said you will have to be trusted and depended on as well to reach the summit. Einstein said “Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value.” I believe if you combined the two ideologies together, you would be able to conclude that it does not matter if you achieve your goal of reaching the summit if to do so you have to impair someone else’s journey. Your character is what will remain long after you have reached the apex. Sometimes you will need to be humble enough to allow your companion to lead rather than yourself because they know the path better than you do. And sometimes you will need to admit to yourself that you are not ready to continue the climb until you have rested. An individual is only as strong as their skills and their mindset allow them to be. So improve your skills and get in the right mindset because the only limitations you have are the ones that you allow to affect you. With that in mind climb a mountain, chase after your dreams because it is better to fail at something, than to succeed at doing nothing at all. Even if you don’t make it to the peak it doesn’t matter, because life is not about the destination it is about the journey. Go out into the world, conquer your own doubt, conquer adversity, turn your limitations into strengths, and climb your mountain. Congratulations, graduation class of 2014! The end of summer has come and with it, the start of a new school year. We've begun the day with an assembly to welcome back students and staff. This year we welcomed some wonderful new staff members to myers along with many new students. The halls were filled with plenty of students sporting smiles and some great fits. The year started off with a bang! The X-Wing boys bathroom was open for a month without being closed down once, a new record for W.R. Melissa Planger This year at Myers, we had a bulletin board saying that reconciliation should be a verb. That is because we know reconciliation comes through actions. It is an ongoing process that involves learning the truth of residential schools and also respecting Indigenous culture. September is an important time of the year because that is when First Nation, Metis, and Inuit children were taken from their homes to residential schools. We wear our orange shirts in September to remind ourselves of how residential schools stripped children of their language and culture. But, the efforts to eliminate indigenous culture were unsuccessful. Indigenous culture thrives in the modern world, despite the dark history. This year, we celebrate indigenous vibrant cultures by learning a Blackfoot word of the week, making commemorative pins, and by watching Jerry First Charger's dance group and learning about hoop dancing. We also saw Mr. Leavitt sporting some wicked eye makeup with his Rasputin costume - if you don't know who Rasputin is, look him up! 16 Carving pumpkins, trick-or-treating, and wearing scary costumes are some of the time-honored traditions of Halloween. Yet, the Halloween holiday has its roots in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (a Gaelic word pronounced "SAH-win"), a pagan religious celebration to welcome the harvest at the end of summer, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts (to the trick the spirits) as they believed the veil between the living and spirit world grew thinnest at that time. 17 Pack. As the years pass, for some, it becomes harder and harder to understand just what was given up during those wartime years. We owe the freedom we enjoy everyday to those who fought in unthinkable conditions. Thank you to Mr Leavitt for sharing your your heartfelt message and thank you to the students who placed wreaths on behalf of DA Ferguson Middle School, Taber Mennonite School and WR Myers High School. 22 I MERRY CHRISTMAS The weather our last week before Christmas holidays turned out to be one for the history books! Windchills in the mid -30's to low -40's, meant school buses weren't running for most of the week. Unfortunately this impacted our overall attendance and our yearly Christmas Festivities! But don't worry, those who were able to attend still did so with big smiles, gifts exchanged between friends..... and of course the infamous "Ugly Christmas Sweaters" were out in full force! V The Concert and Stage Bands both had V incredibly busy years. The Stage Band kicked ■ off the year by playing at the Tri-School BBQ V and Awards Night. The Music of the Night ■ Concert was held in November this year. Due to ■ bad weather, it got postponed by a week but was F a great success and it highlighted some of the talents that are in Taber. Finally, after not happening for several years due to Covid, the Stage Band performed at the Town of Taber's Remembrance Day Ceremony. The Concert Band played Shindler's List and featured Liam Ellingson on the violin at the school's Remembrance Day Ceremony. Thatcher Hughes was the bugler at both events. In December, the annual Christmas Concert was held and Tyler Gurney won for the best dressed instrument. In May, the Concert Band performed at the Graduation Ceremony. And both bands played at the 80s Themed Year End Concert. The first day, I did a concert at Central School in Taber and then travelled on to Revelstoke, Brill Columbia. On day two, the bands did a performance in Revelstoke and 1 elementary kids made them feel like rock stars. Then we travelled on to Vancouvl On day three, we did a concert at a school in Vancouver and then went to I Calpilano Suspension Bridge, Granville Market and finished off the day with o| ten pin bowling. Day four, had the band I to the Vancouver Aquarium. And then spe ,—— some time on the beach at Stanley Park. This day starts with optics lab using the University of Lethbridge Physics lab equipment, and ends ~Lith touring six different labs to see the research of six different professors. This field (lip was the first time that Myers students were able to tour the brand new Science Buildin' While the day is always a little overwhelming in terms of the information Being thrown at them, it's always a great experience to see what scientific research ■Is being done with some of the best equipment in Canada, all within 55km of Taber! BIOLOGY: Dissection of the FETAL PIG! Learning about all of the differing body ystems is what brings the fetal pig to Biology! A fetal pig dissection is helpful jecause the size of the organs makes them easy to find and identify. It is also nteresting to do because a lot of the internal anatomy is similar to humans! An sthical note - fetal pigs are pigs that died just before, during or right after birth, .earning through dissection has been part of school curriculum for decades! Why do we have pep rallies? To build school spirit and enthusiasm for the school's athletic teams and other extracurricular events. The purpose of a pep rally is to bring students, staff, and members of the community together to show ---- ' support for the school and its teams, and to build excitement for upcoming events! 2. There are academic and extracurricular benefits that come from the loyalty that is built up from the camaraderie enjoyed at such events. 3. Headstrong is a student lead group that aims to end stigma around mental health. This year the Headstrong group met weekly to discuss mental health stigma and ways to implement some awesome ideas throughout the school. Their largest initiative happened this spring, during the first week of May. Some of the activities included the making and handing out of de-stress bags, the much-loved plant give away, playing with a therapy dog and much morel! WHAT IS IN YOUR FUTURE? REGIONAL AND PROVINCIAL CARTER JENSEN Established in 1992, the Provincial Skills Canada Competition is Alberta's largest career exploration experience. Every year, the event brings together approximately 700 young people from across the province to compete in 45 trade and technology areas (30 trade and technology areas at the high school level and 45 at the post secondary level). The competition provides an opportunity for young Albertans studying a skilled trade or technology to be tested against exacting standards and against their peers. Students vie to win the honour of being crowned best in province in their chosen discipline, and for the opportunity to join Team Alberta for the Skills Canada National Competition. »us Owen Schnoor and Carter Jensen Events at the High School level include: competed at the Regional competition in Lethbridge. Both thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Carter secured a position in the Provincial competition in Edmonton, Alberta and represented Southwestern Alberta along with another competitor from Claresholm AB. There were 22 competitors in the Welding Bvent. It was a 6 hour event over 2 days. The competitors had to construct a rocketship on a platform. They had to meticulously follow a detailed blueprint that instructed them on the ype of welds (GMAW or SMAW, JP^I/downhill and stitch welds) they had to Jse in specifics areas of the build. Carter placed 8th considering (in his words) most of e competitors had a lot more experience than 16 had.
