    Paper-based acoustic transducers with tunable resonance

    This thesis describes the use of metallized paper as an electrostatically-driven, tunable acoustic source. Cutting the paper into different patterns and shapes alters the frequency response of the vibrating membranes. This work includes the experimental characterization of five patterns with distinct responses and provides qualitative simulations to verify the observed behaviors. With this unique platform, the author demonstrates a potential application – similar to barcode scanning – that identifies objects based on their acoustic signatures. In addition, it is possible to detect changes in acoustic signatures as a result of placing slits in the membranes, which suggests the platform may be applicable to anti-tampering or security-based technologies. Changes in the measured acoustic amplitudes of vibration were as large as 50%, and for cases of intentionally patterned devices, detection of tampering and incisions in membranes resulted in changes in mechanical resonance of 12%. Overall, this platform suggests the potential viability for a new class of smart packaging that makes use of metallized paper as an environmentally benign and low-cost material.M.S.Includes bibliographical referencesby Sandesh Gopinat

    Behaviour Modelling and Anomaly Detection in Smart-Home IoT Devices

    The usage of Internet of Things (IoT) devices has been exponentially increasing and their security is often overlooked. Hackers exploit the vulnerabilities present to perform large scale attacks as well as to obtain privacy-sensitive information. Resource constraints combined with a lack of incentives for manufacturers makes it harder to implement security solutions part of these devices. This thesis aims at developing a system that monitors the behaviour of these IoT devices. Network traffic is captured and analysed as part of a network middle-box to model the behaviour of an IoT device. This traffic shows the interactions of the IoT device with other devices and hosts. By modelling the normal behaviour of a device, we can detect anomalies exhibited. Denial of Service attack was performed to evaluate the effectiveness of state machines in detecting anomalies. To verify the validity of state machines built based on network traffic in a laboratory setup, a test environment with a different setting was used. Traffic was captured from a smart home setting and used to validate the state machines. We show that state machines can be effectively used to model the behaviour of IoT devices at the packet level and can also be used to uniquely identify commands issued from smartphone to IoT device.     Effects of initial and boundary conditions on gravel-bed river morphology

    Assuming that the equilibrium geometry of river channels does not depend on their initial state but solely on boundary conditions, several formulas have been derived that relate the channel depth and width to the river bankfull discharge and bed material. However, due to the existence of a threshold for sediment motion and the strong non-linearity between sediment transport and flow rate, this assumption might not be generally valid for gravel-bed rivers. This research clarifies the role of the initial conditions, more specifically the initial channel width, on the geometry of gravel-bed rivers considering a variety of boundary conditions. The approach includes laboratory experiments and two-dimensional modeling, reproducing the evolution of alluvial channels with different starting widths, discharge regimes and sediment input rates. The experiments represent the Arc River (France). Thus, the characteristics of this river were used in the numerical model to obtain a realistic virtual case complementing the experiments. Different boundary and starting conditions resulted in either braided or single-thread channels. We found that the initial width strongly influences the evolution process and leaves a footprint on the river braid-belt extension. The active width of braided systems and the width of single-thread channels do not depend on the starting condition. They depend on sediment input rather than on discharge variability. Different initial widths result in different final bed levels. This indicates that the initial channel width may affect the degree of channel incision or aggradation.     Immune Checkpoint Inhibitor (ICI)-Induced Painful Thyroiditis: A Rare Presentation With Thyrotoxicosis

    Description: Thyroid dysfunction occurs in 5% to 15% of patients undergoing Immune Checkpoint Inhibitor (ICI) therapy, such as pembrolizumab, typically presenting as painless thyroiditis followed by hypothyroidism. Although often mild and manageable, rare cases of painful thyroiditis with overt thyrotoxicosis can arise, potentially complicating treatment. Case Report: A 23-year-old female with breast cancer treated with pembrolizumab presented with 6 days of fever, chills, erythema, and tenderness at a port site. Despite port removal and antibiotics, fevers persisted with tachycardia. An infectious workup and repeat were negative. Thyrotoxicosis was identified; TSH \u3c 0.008 mIU/L (0.35-4.94), free T4 3.23 ng/dL (0.70-1.48); thyroid tenderness and elevated ESR, consistent with thyroiditis. Free T3 was normal. Thyroid ultrasound showed diffuse gland enlargement. Initial treatment with prednisone, methimazole, and propranolol improved symptoms. After a contrast CT, fever and odynophagia worsened, managed with IV dexamethasone and increased methimazole. At discharge, she remained thyrotoxic; however, fever subsided. Endocrinology follow-up was arranged. Discussion: ICI-mediated thyroiditis, seen in cancer patients undergoing immunotherapy, typically begins with a thyrotoxic phase, often asymptomatic, and transitions rapidly to likely permanent hypothyroidism. Unlike other thyroiditis etiologies, it is not included in hyperthyroidism or thyrotoxicosis guidelines, necessitating a tailored approach. Painless thyroiditis from ICIs usually involves transient thyrotoxicosis in 5% to 20% of cases, followed by hypothyroidism lasting about 6 months, with most recovering normal function, though 10% to 20% develop permanent hypothyroidism. Unlike subacute or postpartum thyroiditis, ICI-mediated thyroiditis is painless, transitions faster (3 months vs 6-9 months), and may involve elevated TPO or thyroglobulin antibodies. Conclusion: This case emphasizes the importance of recognizing atypical patterns in ICI-mediated thyroiditis to ensure timely and appropriate intervention. The requirement for high-dose IV steroids and escalating thionamide doses highlights the severity of the condition, deviating from the usual mild and transient course of ICI-related thyroid dysfunction. This further underscores the need for close monitoring of thyroid function in patients undergoing immunotherapy to prevent complications such as thyroid storm. Guidelines recommend checking thyroid function tests every 4-6 weeks from therapy initiation and every 2-3 weeks after a thyroiditis diagnosis to detect hypothyroid conversion

    Abstract: The main objective of this machine is to remove the coconut shell and to eliminate the skilled labour involved in dehusking. The coconut outer shell is a fibrous husk one to two inches thick. This paper deals with the design and fabrication of pneumatic operated coconut dehusking machine. This project is aimed at producing an efficient and more economical machine for coconut industry. The coconut is known for its great versatility as seen in many domestic, commercial, and industrial uses of its different parts. Coconuts are different from any other fruits because they contain large quantity of tender and when immature they are known as tender-nuts or jelly-nuts and may be harvested for drinking. When they mature they still contain some water and can be used as seed nuts or processed to give oil from the kernel, charcoal from hard shell and coir from fibrous husk. One traditional method used for coconut dehusking is using a machete. This is done by using human energy. This method is risky and tedious and yet requires skills. Hence an alternative is suggested in our project which reduces time involved in coconut dehusking and human effort. Depending upon the survey different sizes of coconut are determined. The machine is designed to accommodate different sizes of the coconut that are cultivated anywhere in the world. Keywords: coconut dehusking machine, coconut industry, fibrous husk.     Comparison of optimization methodologies for robust feed-forward controller for gust load alleviation system

    The master thesis work done by the author encompasses the design of a robust feed-forward controller for gust load alleviation based on optimization techniques to reduce the wing-box mass. The control methodology developed in this thesis is independent of the aircraft platform and can be implemented any aircraft. The author considers H2 and L00 norms in the cost function and synthesizes an optimal feed-forward controller. The actuator limits (rate and deflection) and load factor limits for passenger safety are included in the constraints of the optimization process. The optimization process is carried out after determining the worst case load scenario across the complete flight envelope and synthesizing the controller based on that scenario so as to be robust for all fuel, mach and dynamic pressure variations. The controller synthesized from the optimization process is transformed and reduced to a lower order Infinite Impulse Response (IIR) filter from a higher order Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filter. The IIR filter is further provided with a roll-off for eliminating high frequency oscillations in the actuator. The robustness analysis is carried out by performing Monte Carlo simulations for various parameter uncertainties. The controller was synthesized on a linear model (longitudinal dynamics only) with six elastic modes and it is validated on a linear model (longitudinal and lateral dynamics) with nineteen elastic modes which includes non-linear actuators.Master of Science (Aerospace Engineering
