Tracking and co-location of global point clouds for large-area indoor environments

    No full text
Extended reality (XR) experiences are on the verge of becoming widely adopted in diverse application domains. An essential part of the technology is accurate tracking and localization of the headset to create an immersive experience. A subset of the applications require perfect co-location between the real and the virtual world, where virtual objects are aligned with real-world counterparts. Current headsets support co-location for small areas, but suffer from drift when scaling up to larger ones such as buildings or factories. This paper proposes tools and solutions for this challenge by splitting up the simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) into separate mapping and localization stages. In the pre-processing stage, a feature map is built for the entire tracking area. A global optimizer is applied to correct the deformations caused by drift, guided by a sparse set of ground truth markers in the point cloud of a laser scan. Optionally, further refinement is applied by matching features between the ground truth keyframe images and their rendered-out SLAM estimates of the point cloud. In the second, real-time stage, the rectified feature map is used to perform localization and sensor fusion between the global tracking and the headset. The results show that the approach achieves robust co-location between the virtual and the real 3D environment for large and complex tracking environments. This research was funded by the European Union (HORIZON MAX-R, Mixed Augmented and Extended Reality Media Pipeline, 101070072) and the Flanders Make’s XRTwin SBO project (R-12528)

Ahead of others in the authorship order: names with middle initials appear earlier in author lists of academic articles in psychology

    No full text
Middle name initials are often used by people in contexts where intellectual performance matters. Given this association, middle initials in people’s names indicate intellectual capacity and performance (Van Tilburg and Igou, 2014). In the current research, we examined whether middle initials are associated with a typical academic indicator of intellectual performance: authorship order of journal articles. In psychology, authorship early in the author list of an article should correspond with greater contribution to this intellectual endeavor compared to authorship appearing later in the author list. Given that middle initials indicate intellectual capacity and performance, we investigated whether there would be a positive relationship between middle initials in author names and early (vs. late) appearance of names in author lists of academic journal articles in psychology. In two studies, we examined the relationship between amount of authors’ middle initials and authorship order. Study 1 used a sample of 678 articles from social psychology journals published in the years 2006 and 2007. Study 2 used a sample of 696 articles from journals of multiple sub-disciplines in psychology published in the years from 1970 to 2013. Middle initials in author names were overrepresented early (vs. late) in author lists. We discuss implications of our findings for academic decisions on authorship orders, potential avenues of further investigation, and applications

Minimum Circuit Size, Graph Isomorphism, and Related Problems

We study the computational power of deciding whether a given truth-table can be described by a circuit of a given size (the Minimum Circuit Size Problem, or MCSP for short), and of the variant denoted MKTP where circuit size is replaced by a polynomially-related Kolmogorov measure. Prior to our work, all reductions from supposedly-intractable problems to MCSP / MKTP hinged on the power of MCSP / MKTP to distinguish random distributions from distributions produced by hardness-based pseudorandom generator constructions. We develop a fundamentally different approach inspired by the well-known interactive proof system for the complement of Graph Isomorphism (GI). It yields a randomized reduction with zero-sided error from GI to MKTP. We generalize the result and show that GI can be replaced by any isomorphism problem for which the underlying group satises some elementary properties. Instantiations include Linear Code Equivalence, Permutation Group Conjugacy, and Matrix Subspace Conjugacy. Along the way we develop encodings of isomorphism classes that are efficiently decodable and achieve compression that is at or near the information-theoretic optimum; those encodings may be of independent interest. This article is "to appear" in SIAM Journal on ComputingPeer reviewedAn extended abstract of this paper appeared in the Proceedings of the 9th Innovations in Theoretical Computer Science Conference (ITCS’18)

Evaluating the societal relevance of academic research: A guide

    No full text
A number of Dutch organisations involved in quality assurance in research are collaborating on a project entitled Evaluating Research in Context, or ‘ERiC’. One of the aims of the project is to develop methods for evaluating the societal relevance of research. This guide has been written to supplement two Dutch protocols for the ex post evaluation of research groups and research institutes. ERiC is a partnership between the Netherlands Association of Universities of Applied Sciences (HBO-raad), the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), the Association of Universities in the Netherlands (VSNU) and the Rathenau Institute’s Science System Assessment department.Architectur

Evaluating Research in Context: Pilot Study at Faculty of Architecture TU Delft

    No full text
The vice chancellor of Delft University of Technology, Prof.dr.ir. J. Fokkema, introduced a pilot Evaluating Research in Context (ERiC) at the Faculty of Architecture. The Faculty of Architecture perceives a serious confl ict between the demands and criteria in evaluation procedures and the ambition to be relevant for the practice of architecture, planning and building. The goal of this ERiC pilot is to develop an evaluation method that judges research in the Faculty of Architecture on all its merits and takes into account the specifi c characteristics of architecture research. A second goal is the improvement of the evaluation of research contributions to society. This report presents the full results of this project and gives recommendations how to use these results in an evaluation according to the Standard Evaluation Protocol 2009-2015.Architectur

Majority of erectile dysfunction patients would have preferred earlier implantation of their penile prosthesis: validation of the recently changed EAU guidelines

    No full text
Until 2019, the European Association of Urology guidelines recommended the implantation of a penile prosthesis as a third-line therapy, which has since then changed to "if other treatments fail or depending on the patient's preference". Primary endpoint was to assess whether patients with a penile prosthesis and their partner would have preferred earlier implantation. Secondary endpoints were the reason why patient and partner wanted earlier implantation, how much earlier they wanted it, satisfaction of patient and partner and if patient and partner would have recommended the intervention. We selected patients with a virgin inflatable penile prosthesis operated between April 2013 and December 2019. We included 155 patients and 65 partners. Telephonic interview was conducted in a structured manner. Further data were collected retrospectively. The preference for earlier implantation was reported in 59.4% of patients and 46.2% of partners. Of them, respectively 53.2% and 46.6% would have wanted the prosthesis more than 5 years earlier. Satisfaction was seen in 83.2% of patients and 73.8% of partners. Respectively 82.6% and 78.4% of patients and partners would recommend the procedure. Our results indicate that a more patient-oriented approach with good counseling is desirable and that the "three-level" concept must be abandoned. All contributors to the article are mentioned in the author list.
