Get PDFThe purpose of this thesis was to demonstrate the significance of the life and ministry of David Martyn Lloyd-Jones in post-war British evangelicalism and to show that, so far as Protestant churches in England and Wales were concerned, no history of the period can afford to ignore him. It is our contention that despite differences of opinion and self- marginalization Lloyd-Jones was and has remained a major force in evangelical thinking. In order to understand how this developed the thesis has been structured along thematic lines highlighting events, persons and questions. The study begins by setting the stage with a biographical chapter and goes on to examine the kind of impact that Lloyd-Jones's preaching had on Christians of all denominations. He believed preaching to be the greatest need of the day and the position of this thesis is that preaching was Lloyd-Jones's greatest contribution to twentieth- century Christianity. As a preacher he attracted one of London's largest congregations and in chapter three we look at the history and nature of Westminster Chapel comparing it with neighbouring ministries, and establishing the kind of people who went to hear him. Chapters four and five ascertain the factors which shaped Lloyd-Jones's views on the church and show how his Reformed evangelicalism led in a separatist as opposed to an ecumenical direction and finally, to a position which was neither Congregational nor Presbyterian. Our further argument is that while he favoured unity among believers his separatist ecclesiology only exacerbated the situation and left evangelicals more divided than before. Chapters six to eight evaluate Lloyd-Jones's background, the nature of his leadership and the extent of his influence - factors which either shaped or were the outcome of his ministry - and looks at the issues which these questions raise

Influence of higher order effects on the vortex instability of thermal boundary layer flow in a wedge shaped domain
Get PDFWe reconsider the onset of streamwise vortices in the thermal boundary layer flow induced by an inclined upward-facing heated semi-infinite surface placed within a Newtonian fluid. Particular emphasis is laid upon how the induced flow in the isothermal region outside the boundary layer affects the boundary layer itself at higher order, and how this, in turn, affects the stability criterion for the onset of vortices. We find that the stability criterion for thermal boundary layers in air is less susceptible to changes in external geometry than for boundary layers in water. In general, we conclude that the variation of the stability criterion with wedge angle (between the heated and the outer boundary surface) is too great for the theory to predict reliably where disturbances first begin to grow
Investigating the implications of Hattie’s (2012) synthesis of meta-analyses for teaching higher education in further education
No full textThis paper investigates the implications of John Hattie’s synthesis of over 800 meta-analyses for lesson design and delivery within the context of a teacher training programme. A case study approach is used to structure a two-stage investigative strategy (Yin, 1981). Stage one involves an interpretive cycle that allows Hattie’s attributes of effective practice to become meaningful through a consideration of the context in which they are applied. Stage two builds on the findings of this review to translate ‘ways of thinking about teaching’ into ‘ways of teaching’ that accommodate different goals and abilities in order to impact a range of student outcomes. This paper documents progress from the first stage of the analysis. Through the investigation, effective teaching is represented as a process of evidence-informed inquiry and problem solving in which a cycle of reading, deliberation, and dialogue continues until a shared understanding emerges of the practices that enhance learning for individual students (Smythe et al., 2008). These practices include but are not limited to: providing feedback that takes students forward in their learning, using data on student learning to inform collaborative evaluations of teacher impact, and modifying teaching based on an informed consideration of the strategies that facilitate learning. Results suggest that practitioners need to develop a shared commitment to thinking that is willing to engage with evidence and use this as the basis for questioning mindsets, critiquing existing practices, and exploring new ideas; and a commitment to action that is open to managing a complex process of change

No full textThe author tries to argue that J. Kim’s exclusion argument is not incompatible with the acceptance of a certain form of ontological emergence and that C. D. Broad’s and C. Lloyd Morgan’s doctrines should be actually taken as weakly emergentist doctrines – even if Lloyd Morgan’s doctrine can be also interpreted in strongly emergentist terms. The crucial point of such versions of emergentism – what grounds the very occurrence of emergence – lies in external relations’ being involved in the emergence bases. First, the author distinguishes between weak and strong ontological emergence and between internal and external relations. Secondly, he reconstructs Broad’s and Lloyd Morgan’s doctrines. Thirdly, he examines Kim’s exclusion argument and he argues for the general conclusion of the article. In conclusion, insofar as physicalists accept that non-physical entities can depend in special ways on physical ones (e.g., by involving irreducible, external relations in the dependence bases), they can also accept certain forms of ontological emergence
