Economic Impacts of Rail Transit on Recreational Shore Communities: Case of the North Jersey Coast Line

    No full text
This study estimated the impact of spending by North Jersey Coast Line (NJCL) riders during summer weekends on the economies of the Jersey Shore communities known for beach-oriented recreational activities. The NJCL is a commuter rail line that provides many workers with access to their workplaces on weekdays throughout the year. The line also provides a large number of recreational visitors from New York City and other parts of New Jersey with direct access to the Jersey Shore communities on summer weekends. To estimate the economic benefits to the shore communities from spending by NJCL riders on summer weekends, this study used a software program (R/ECON) regional input–output (I-O) model developed by the Rutgers Economic Advisory Service of Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey. Visitor expenditure data from an onboard survey of NJCL riders were used as model inputs. The survey was conducted during the summer of 2013 and was completed by 2,241 riders returning from the shore area. The R/ECON I-O model provided estimates of economic benefits to the shore communities in terms of jobs, earnings, gross domestic product, state taxes, and local taxes. The model also generated return-on investment multipliers for these variables. The study showed that the 14.8millionspentbyNJCLridersonsummerweekendsintheshorecommunitiesgeneratedapproximately225annualizedjobs,morethan14.8 million spent by NJCL riders on summer weekends in the shore communities generated approximately 225 annualized jobs, more than 9 million in earnings, and more than $1 million in state taxes. Full text link
(2) Subtansi Hukum, yairu Peraturan Mahkamah Agung Nomor 5 tahun 2019 tentang Pedoman Mengadili Pemohonan Dispensasi Kawin. ABSTRACT Child Marriage since there was a change in law, namely No. 16 of 2019 concerning changes to Law No. 1 of 1974 concerning the minimum age limit for marriage has increased in Indonesia, especially in Lumajang Regency, this has caused all government agencies to try and try to minimize number increase of child marriages. Likewise, the Lumajang Regency Religious Court also participated in reducing the increase in the number by launching an innovation, namely OKLING DEKA (Optimization of Marriage Dispensation Counseling). The author in this case aims to examine the role of OKLING DEKA in reducing the number of dispensations for marriage in the Lumajang Religious Court. Then how is the effectiveness of OKLING DEKA in the Lumajang Religious Court in terms of Lawrence M. Friedman's theory of legal effectiveness. The type of research used is empirical legal research with a qualitative approach. The data used in this research comes from primary and secondary data. The author conducted research in the Lumajang District Religious Court. The methods used by researchers in collecting data are observation, interviews, and documents. The data obtained will go through the process of editing, classification, and verification. The results of the data will be analyzed using Lawrence M. Friedman's legal effectiveness theory and finally conclusions will be made. The results of this study are that OKLING DEKA provides counseling and direction to prospective brides and grooms with the hope that underage marriages will decrease in number. Then regarding the Effectiveness of OKLING DEKA based on Lawrence M. Friedman's legal theory, there are 3 aspects that must be fulfilled. (1) The legal structure, namely the Lumajang Regency Religious Court as the organizer and the OKLING DEKA Officer as the executor, has implemented it as well as possible. (2) Legal Substance, namely Supreme Court Regulation Number 5 of 2019 concerning Guidelines for Trialing Applications for Dispensation of Marriage. (3) Legal Culture, people have a habit of marrying off their children after graduating from school and believe that if they refuse the application they will become an old maid. Of the 3 aspects above, the third aspect is ineffective, because people still marry off their children who are still under the age limit for marriage.

Manipulation of particles in a Hele-Shaw cell using sources and sinks

    No full text
The interest in manipulating particles, droplets and bubbles have garnered significant attention in recent years, owing to the advantages offered by micro-fluidics and the advancement in micro-fabrication technologies. These manipulation activities have found its applications in myriad fields of engineering, ranging from medical diagnostics to chemical industry to drug discovery. This has increased demand for the development of devices such as 'Lab on a chip', which performs laboratory-sized experiments and analysis on a single small chip, with the same speed and accuracy as its room-sized counterpart. However, manipulation activities carried out in these devices has fixed channels, designed to serve purpose for specific manipulation tasks. This makes the device suitable for a specific application. Addressing this aspect, a device designed without having any real channels would give an opportunity to integrate multiple functionalities onto a single-chip in the long run. As a first step towards reaching this 'bigger picture', it is necessary to explore the feasibility of manipulating particles, droplets and bubbles by generating so called 'virtual channels'.The present thesis focuses on an attempt to manipulate particles without the use of any real channels or external field. Although such manipulation is desired in the micro-scale, a top down approach is preferred and hence, the manipulation is carried out in a scaled up model. First, a Hele-Shaw flow cell is designed with sources and sinks in the millimeter scale to deviate streamlines in the same range. Thereafter, four different velocity fields are studied under different combination of sources and sinks, which are then compared to the computational ones. The property of a Hele-Shaw cell that the averaged velocity over the height of the channel is irrotational, makes it possible to compute velocity fields by the use of potential flow theory. The same velocity fields are hence, computed using a discrete source based Panel Method. A good agreement is found between computation and experiment, making PIV measurements not a necessary option for evaluation of velocity fields under these sources and sinks. Finally, individual particle is inserted into the Hele-Shaw cell and manipulated using unsteady fields. The manipulation includes tasks such as diverting particles having same initial position to different end locations; trapping particle for different instances of time and then releasing them into different directions; flipping positions of two particles; and deflecting a particle by ninety degrees. The individual particle trajectory for the above manipulation activities are tracked down using a particle tracking code and then compared with the ones generated using the Panel Method. This, however, excludes the activities where particles need to be trapped because of particle fluctuation near stagnation point. Overall, the Panel Method serves well in predicting particle path-lines and can be used as a tool for manipulating particles.Mechanical Engineerin
