Possibilities for converting conventional cattle production to the organic model in the Grijalva River Basin, Mexico PUBLIC INTEREST STATEMENT Subjects: Bioscience; Environment & Agriculture; Environmental Studies & Management Keywords: organic livestock
Abstract: The possibilities for converting conventional cattle production to the organic model were evaluated in the Grijalva River Basin, Mexico, and possible interventions were identified. A multi-criteria organic livestock conversion index (OLCI) with 10 indicators comprising 35 variables was used. Information was obtained through participatory workshops, direct observation, and interviews to 91 farmers of 11 different communities in the municipalities of Mazapa de Madero (n = 17), Huitiupán (n = 30), and Tacotalpa (n = 44). Results show higher OLCI values in Mazapa (56.8%) and Tacotalpa (56.7%) than in Huitiupán (49.0%). The production units evaluated show: (i) limitations with respect to indicators ecological weed control in pastures and crops, veterinary prevention and treatment, food safety, and ecological management, and (ii) strengths to reach the organic standards are: feed management, sustainable pasture management, soil fertilization, ecological pest and disease control in pastures and crops, breeds and reproduction, and animal wellbeing. In order to revert the future scenario of conventional livestock production and to transition to organic cattle raising, it is necessary to: (1) train and advice farmers regarding ecological production techniques and management, principally with respect to the limitations pointed out, and (2) implement a policy for development of livestock raising with specific functional and structural changes. Additional information is available at the end of the article ABOUT THE AUTHOR J. Nahed is a specialist in animal production systems; Nahed has participated in several scientific meetings, and he has taught undergraduate and graduate courses and published several articles in national and international journals on issues related to animal production systems, agricultural production systems, silvopastoral systems and organic farming. He is a National Researcher Level II in the National Research System of Mexico's National Council on Science and Technology (CONACYT according to its Spanish initials), and is an honorary member of the State System of Researchers in Chiapas, Mexico. PUBLIC INTEREST STATEMENT In this research, the opportunities and limitations for converting conventional cattle production to the organic model in the Grijalva River Basin, Mexico, were evaluated. The purpose of the research has a wider societal relevance for the farmers of the three communities studied, because conventional livestock production is an important activity in the zone and has a great potential for converting to the organic model. The research began by the interest in the topic of a group of farmers, which were supported by several researchers of our team. To conduct the research, an intense field work with farmers was carried out, and eventually got to know the main aspects of conventional livestock that favor or limit its transformation to the organic model, in addition to its approximation to this model. The hope of our research team is that farmers in this zone achieve the development of organic livestock production

A framework to measure e-participation level of government social media accounts
© 2019 held by the owner/author(s). Publication rights licensed to Association for Computing Machinery. There is a rising attention to the importance of social media for e-participation due to its value in creating a convenient communication channel with citizens. Evaluating e-participation is eventually an important milestone for progress. The objective of this research is to provide guidelines for a framework that assesses e-participation on government\u27s social accounts. Based on the work of Tambouris at el., 2007 [1] and Nelimarkka at el., 2014 [2], the research proposes a framework that could be applied to Facebook government accounts. This research though covers three major gaps in previous e-participation assessment research: scarcity in evaluating eparticipation within developing contexts, reliance on limited rather than large-scale empirical data, focusing on online government portals as an assessment e-participation platform and not considering social accounts\u27 performance. This research is supported by Crowd Analyzer [3], a social media monitoring tool, to enable data crawling and users comments\u27 sentiment analysis
A framework for using data analytics to measure trust in government through the social capital generated over governmental social media platforms
© 2018 is held by the owner/author(s). It has been noted that citizens\u27 trust in public institutions is continuously declining. Low social capital has been confirmed as one of the main reasons for this decrease in trust towards government. As social media offer a number of features that could foster social capital, governments worldwide are embracing these new tools in an attempt to restore citizens\u27 trust. Having an existence on social media doesn\u27t guarantee that it would increase trust; it can even compromise on the reputation of a public agency in the absence of a clear strategy targeted towards developing confidence and trust. To ensure the reflection of this strategy on the content of governmental social media, there should be a mechanism that measures the degree of trust on social media in government taking into account different aspects related to trust. Despite the importance of this kind of evaluation, it is though overlooked in both academia and practice. This paper therefore aims to fill this research gap through suggesting a standard technique to measure different trust dimensions on social media accounts of governments. A proposed framework for evaluating trust was applied on Facebook accounts of three Egyptian ministries -selected based on their apparent contribution to the national economy- taking into account six dimensions of trust: Responsiveness, Accessibility, Transparency, Effectiveness, Efficiency, and Participation.https://fount.aucegypt.edu/faculty_book_chapters/1225/thumbnail.jp

This study is qualitative research with an internal analysis approach (content analysis), which attempts to identify how a novelist inculcates messages of da‘wah in writing, specifically da‘wah towards non-Muslims, along with messages of any aspect that the novelist wants to convey. The results of this study found that the method used by Habiburrahman El Shirazi is to feature some non-Muslim characters in the novel, such as the family of Mr. Boutros Rafael Girgis (Maria, Yosoef, Mr. Boutros, Madame Nahed), and Alicia, a journalist who is from the United States. Through these characters, he included critical topics of discussion in the Islamic point of view that are widely misunderstood by some non-Muslims, namely the role of women in Islamic teachings, relations between husband and wife, the mixing of non-mahram men and women, and how Islam functions as a guide and provides blessings to the community, be it Muslim or non-Muslim. Similarly, through the plot of the story, the author of the novel conveys the Islamic message about the relationship between Muslims and non-Muslims. It is hoped that this study will open more minds to the fact that da‘wah can be conveyed effectively through writing and works of literature
Prevalence of serological markers for viral hepatitis B and C in female dental patients
Prevalence of serological markers for hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) among a sample of female patients receiving dental treatment at the College of Dentistry, King Saud University, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was evaluated. STUDY DESIGN: Patients who were receiving dental treatment by students for at least three successive visits and had no past history of viral hepatitis were screened for the presence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and hepatitis C viral antibodies (HCV). RESULTS: One hundred fifty-fivepatientsparticipatedinthisstudy.Fivepatients(3.2%) aged 23-53 years were found hepatitis markers seropositive. Two patients (1.3%) were HBsAg seropositive and three patients (1.9%) were anti-HCV seropositive. CONCLUSIONS: Taking medical history without screening blood test for HBV and HCV might lead to treating infected patients as non infected ones. This increases the risk of hepatitis cross infection unless strict adherence to standard precautions in dental setting is followed.Address reprint request to

Evaluation of Maternal Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Status and Its Association with Birth Outcomes
The present study examines the potential role of the Maternal Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid profile in fetal growth by investigating the association between maternal concentrations of these fatty acids in the gestation stage and birth outcome measures (birth weight, birth length, and head circumference at birth). The study covered (255) women with a mean age of 29.22 ± 5.29 years. Half of them had a Bachelor’s degree or higher, and most of them were unemployed. The author used a questionnaire for data collection. The level of fatty acids was not correlated with pregnancy outcomes such as weight, height, and head circumference. A significant positive correlation between total MUFAs and gestational age was established. There was a positive correlation between the level of total n-3 PUFA and gestational weight gain. There was also a positive correlation between nutritional knowledge and the amount of fish consumed during pregnancy. However, no correlation was found between the consumption of fish and pregnancy outcomes. This study has demonstrated preliminary results regarding the level of polyunsaturated fatty acids in pregnant women and pregnancy outcomes that can help evaluate the current or future pregnancy preventative programs when planning reproductive health programs
Aging gracefully in Greater Beirut: Are there any gender-based differences?
Background: The implications of rapid aging of the Lebanese population are under-researched. No national studies have so far investigated the living conditions and the health status of urban Lebanese elderly across gender. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study involving 905 randomly selected community dwelling elderly aged ≥65 years living in Greater Beirut. Gender differences were assessed among participants who completed a standardized questionnaire on socio-demographic factors, nutritional, health, and functional characteristics. Results: The sample included 533 men (59%) and 372 women (41%). Elderly were regrouped into 'younger elderly' (≤70 years), and 'older elderly' (>70 years) which represented respectively 44.3% and 55.7% of the total population. Women, regardless of their age, were less educated and more likely to live alone. Moreover, poor nutritional status, self-perceived health, absence of physical activity, comorbidity, polymedication and depression were significantly higher among women. 'Older elderly' women became significantly more functionally disabled compared with men of their age. Conclusions: This study evidenced that Lebanese elderly women were disadvantaged regarding their socio-economic, health and functional status. It is requested a nationwide effort to improve the socio-economic status and the health of Lebanese elderly, especially women. © 2016 The Author
