No full textThis work is about the role of asymmetry in distribution of portfolio returns
and preferences of investors. It is known that skewness of distribution can play some
roles about preferences but usually in economic theory this role is merged with the
concept of utility function, and in particular with expected utility maximization. This
perspective seems me unsatisfactory in two respects. Firstly the financial intuition behind the opportunity of consider asymmetry become too abstract and difficult to grasp
for practitioners. Secondly this strategy work only if the third moment exist, this is not
a weak assumption for financial returns. Here we suggest another strategy. It takes in
consideration the comparison between mean and median of return distribution. So we
achieve a representation that give us an intuition about the opportunity of consider with
favour positive asymmetry and with disfavour negative one. The main advantage of
this representation is that it involves probabilistic concepts only (no utility theory) and
it is easy to understand and communicate for practitioners too. Moreover in this way
the existence of third moment is not required, first one it is enough

Monitoring activity on Canale Reale
No full textThis study is part of the Canale Reale environmental monitoring plan drawn up as part of the HUREDEPIS project.
The Canale Reale, more than 60 Km long, is perhaps the most extensive hydrographic system in the Province of Brindisi, naturally collecting the rainwater falling within its catchment area. The Canale Reale is in close proximity to and highly affected by both a urbanized landscape and the rich agricultural areas of the Province of Brindisi. Unfortunately, in the last few decades it has been transformed into a receptacle for urban runoff and treated wastewater from the municipalities lying along its course, particularly Latiano, Francavilla Fontana, and Mesagne, and all introduce contaminants to Canale Reale waters. Agricultural runoff introduces contaminants along the stream too. One of the reasons why deterioration in the water quality of the Canale Reale is a key issue is that its estuary is next to the Torre Guaceto protected area. As a result in the past the research and monitoring activities have been conducting only on the Canale Reale Estuary. These activities were typically geared for a specific need, limited in coverage, and failed to provide an overall picture of the Canale Reale's condition.
The aim of the present paper is to provide water quality data on the whole Canale Reale and to investigate the impact of the urban runoff and treated wastewater from the municipalities lying along its course

No full textSono qui pubblicate e annotate cento lettere a Giuseppe Vitali, di notevole interesse, scelte tra le 230 contenute nell'Archivio Vitali, donato dalla figlia Luisa all'Unione Matematica Italiana. Per quanto riguarda l'analisi reale, la raccolta registra i nomi di Lebesgue, Fréchet, Fubini, B. Levi, Arzelà, Nikodym, Peano, Sierpiński, W. H. Young. In margine allo svolgimento della nuova Analisi, dalle lettere a Vitali emerge un'intensa discussione sui fondamenti della matematica ed in particolare sull'assioma della scelta e sui numeri ordinali, che vede interventi di B. Levi, Fubini, Pieri, Peano, Burali-Forti. Alcune lettere di Arzelà, Landau, Vivanti, Pincherle, riportano l'attenzione sugli importanti contributi del Vitali alla teoria delle serie di funzioni di variabile complessa. Alle ricerche del Vitali sul calcolo differenziale assoluto e le sue applicazioni geometrico-differenziali si riferiscono le lettere di Ricci-Curbastro e di Levi-Civita. Alle prime ricerche del Vitali e alle sue vicende accademiche sono legate le lettere di Appel, Bianchi, Dini, Arzelà, Enriques, Tonelli. Particolarmente frequenti e calorose quelle di Enriques che fu professore di Vitali a Bologna e quelle di Guido Fubini che fu suo compagno di studi a Pisa ed amico per tutta la vita. Vi sono poi diverse lettere interessanti per la storia delle matematiche e dell'insegnamento delle matematiche di Bompiani, Giorgi, Pincherle, Sansone, Scorza, Severi, Tonelli, Tonolo, Vivanti. Tra queste, alcune di Berzolari riguardano la collaborazione di Vitali alla Enciclopedia delle Matematiche elementari
