Collecting Older Lesbians' and Gay Men's Stories of Rural Life in South West England and Wales: "We Were Obviously Gay Girls ... (So) He Removed His Cow From Our Field"

    No full text
The emerging recollections, perceptions and storied biographies of older lesbians and gay men and their experiences in rural Britain are presented in the article, alongside consideration of the multiple qualitative methodologies used in a unique multi-method participatory action research project. The project aimed to empower older lesbians and gay men in rural areas through a collaborative design and meaningful participation in the research process itself. Methods included the core Biographic Narrative Interpretive Method (BNIM) (JONES, 2001, 2004; WENGRAF, 2001) with its interpretation of data by panels of citizens. In addition, visual ethnographic site visits, a focus group and two days of theatrical improvisation of interview data to explore action within the texts were used. The project embraced the principles of a performative social science (GERGEN & JONES, 2008; JONES, 2006, 2012a, 2012b) in its dissemination plan. Four of the collected stories are elaborated on here. These and other stories, reports and observations contributed to the creation of the main output of the project—a short professionally made film (Rufus Stone). The film is used to encourage community dialogue and inform service providers, opening up new possibilities of connectivity, communication and common ground at both macro and micro levels

Mapping the Discipline of the Olympic Games An Author-Cocitation Analysis

    No full text
The authors conducted an author cocitation analysis on prominent authors writing about the Olympics during the 1990s. Author cocitation is an established bibliometric technique that can be used to measure the relative similarities of topics written about by the cited authors. This enables a visual representation of the “intellectual space” of the discipline, in this case the Olympics, to be created for the period under review. So core and peripheral research areas are identified, along with their major contributors. The representation appears as a two-dimensional cluster-enhanced map. Subject expertise was then applied to the results to place labels on the generated clusters of authors and their topics

The Expanded Interiors Re-Staged commission was part of the Expanded Interiors Re-Staged exhibition, which forms one of the key outputs of the Expanded Interiors Re-Staged project. The exhibition, Expanded Interiors Re-Staged, relocated to Newcastle’s Hatton Gallery contemporary installations created by visual artist Catrin Huber as part of an earlier project, Expanded Interiors, which had been sited and displayed at the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Herculaneum and Pompeii. The installations sited at the House of the Beautiful Courtyard in Herculaneum and the House of the Cryptoporticus in Pompeii, had responded to and were in dialogue with the specific nature of the buildings and wall paintings from these two Roman houses. They were shown in situ from May 2018 – January 2019. In the Hatton Gallery in Newcastle these installations were exhibited alongside new work developed by Catrin Huber to set them in a fresh dialogue in a new context, with the distinctive architecture of the Hatton Gallery. Artist Rosie Morris, who was part of the original Expanded Interiors research team was commissioned to develop her own contemporary installation in response to the research done within the Roman houses, and the new venue. </p

The role of the third sector in work with offenders: the perceptions of criminal justice and third sector stakeholders

    No full text
This paper examines the views of national criminal justice and third sector stakeholders on the strategic position of the sector, and its role in the resettlement of offenders. The interview data suggests that although the involvement of the third sector in the criminal justice system is promoted in national policy, considerable gaps have been identified. These include the quality and availability of regional commissioning, implementation strategies and the long-term plans for the re-specification of the criminal justice system. The findings also indicate that increasing emphasis on competitive policy may put a strain on future inter-sector partnerships. The implications of the findings are discussed and areas of further research are highlighted in relation to both the prison and probation services.<br/
