Verdazyl radicals as mediators in living radical polymerisation and dopamine end-functionalised polymers for application as friction modifiers
Verdazyl Radicals as Mediators in Living Radical Polymerisation:
The aim of this work was to investigate verdazyl radicals as an alternative to
nitroxides as mediators in stable free radical polymerisation. Verdazyl radicals and
their unimolecular initiators were synthesised and utilised in the polymerisation of
styrene and n-butyl acrylate. Varying degrees of success was observed in the
polymerisations depending on the structure of the verdazyl radical. The
polymerisation of methyl methacrylate and the copolymerisation of styrene and
methyl methacrylate were also investigated. Correlations between observed
molecular weight and theoretical molecular weight were poor but may be improved
by optimisation of the reaction conditions. Electron paramagnetic resonance was
used to elucidate the radical structure as well as to confirm the living nature of the
polymerisation technique. Electron paramagnetic resonance was also utilised to
provide an insight into radical stability and reactivity in the various reactions
undertaken.
Dopamine End-Functionalised Polymers for Application as Friction
Modifiers:
The aim of this work was to synthesise oil soluble dopamine end-functionalised
polymers for mechanical testing to determine if the polymers can reduce friction by
film formation at a surface. A dopamine based initiator was synthesised and used in Cu(I) and Cu(0) mediated polymerisations with little success and the dopamine
catecholic end-group could not be identified as the polymer end-group. To enable a
successful living polymerisation, the catechol groups on dopamine required
protection. Complete deprotection of the catechol group can be achieved post
polymerisation. The polymerisation of lauryl methacrylate was achieved using a
polymerisation method designed for the long chain, non-polar molecule which
utilised Cu(I)Cl. The polymerisations were scaled up to obtain a baseline, protected
dopamine and deprotected dopamine polymers for mechanical testing. A reduction
in friction and wear observed for the deprotected dopamine polymer, however,
corrosion was also observed and may have affected the results
Gene loss and lineage specific restriction-modification systems associated with niche differentiation in the Campylobacter jejuni Sequence Type 403 clonal complex
Campylobacter jejuni is a highly diverse species of bacteria commonly associated with infectious intestinal disease of humans and zoonotic carriage in poultry, cattle, pigs, and other animals. The species contains a large number of distinct clonal complexes that vary from host generalist lineages commonly found in poultry, livestock, and human disease cases to host-adapted specialized lineages primarily associated with livestock or poultry. Here, we present novel data on the ST403 clonal complex of C. jejuni, a lineage that has not been reported in avian hosts. Our data show that the lineage exhibits a distinctive pattern of intralineage recombination that is accompanied by the presence of lineage-specific restriction-modification systems. Furthermore, we show that the ST403 complex has undergone gene decay at a number of loci. Our data provide a putative link between the lack of association with avian hosts of C. jejuni ST403 and both gene gain and gene loss through nonsense mutations in coding sequences of genes, resulting in pseudogene formation

Maintenance and Update Frequency: notPlannedStatement: This South Georgina Basin Traverses Sandover, Marqua (P200080), gravity point data contains ground gravity point data for the South Georgina Basin Traverses Sandover, Marqua (P200080) survey acquired for Haines Surveys Pty Ltd. This dataset contains a total of 654 point data values. The data is located in NT and were acquired in 2000. The point located data were collected in traverses layout at a station spacing between 500 and 1000 metres.
Terrain corrections were calculated using the INTREPID Geophysics software package. The processed data are checked by GA geophysicists using standard methods for assessing quality to ensure that the final data are fit-for-purpose.
All data are provided in EPSG:4283 coordinates, Australian Height Datum (AHD) and gravity datum of AAGD07. The units are degrees, meters, and micrometres per second squared, respectively.

Maintenance and Update Frequency: asNeededStatement: Since 1956 the Bureau of Mineral Resources (BMR) has been making reconnaissance geological and geophysical investigations of the Georgina Basin in Queensland and the Northern Territory. As part of this programme, the BMR Seismic Party No. 1 carried out setstic surreys in the south-eastern part of the basin between the Toko Syncline and Canary in 1963 (Robertson, 1965) and 1964 (Jones, 1965). Prior to completion of the latter survey it was decided to follow it with a seismic reconnaissance survey to investigate the general configuration of the basin over the large
area of outcropping Lower Palaeozoic sediments that occur in the southern part of the Georgina Basin in the region of the Northern Territory - Queensland border. This survey was originally scheduled to commence in September 1964
and to continue throughout 1965 with a break in the field season during the summer months from December to March. It was planned to commence the survey with a programme of experimental work designed to develop a suitable technique for reconnaissance seismic work on the Lower Palaeozoic formations, which cover a very extensive area.
Completion of the survey in the south-eastern Georgina Basin in 1964 was delayed until late in October, with the result that only about four weeks remained in the 1964 field season for work on the Lower Palaeozoic areas. This time was devot-ed to experimental work to develop a suitable shooting technique, on the understanding that the testing programme would, if necessary, be continued at the beginning of the 1965 field season. At the request of the BMR, the author, geophysicist from the Institut Francais du Petrole spent two weeks with the party in November to advise on the conduct of the experimental programme.In November 1964, the Bureau of Mineral Resources made a brief experimental seismic survey near Cockroach Wdterhole in the centre of the Tobermory 1:250,000 map area, Northern Territory. This survey was designed as part of a more extensive reconnaissance seismic survey to be made in 1964 and 1965 on areas of outcropping Lower Palaeozoic rocks in the southern part of the Georgina Basln. In this initial part of the survey a shortial profile was shot using a simple recording technique and noise tests and tests of various shot and geophone arrangements were carried out. It was established that, despite diffibult drilling conditions and the prevalence of random, high frequency noise, a suitable seismic technique for reconnaissance in this area, which it was hoped was representative of a very extensive region, could be developed

This 1965 photograph shows Maria Cristina Arellana of Havana, Cuba, Georgina Estevez and Laura Tobie, both of Caracas, Venezuela in Hubert Hayes Memorial Log Cabin. Founder and director of the Mountain Youth Jamboree, Hubert H. Hayes (1901-1964) auditioned and directed youth to perform in folk dance, music, and folk and ballad singing. The jamboree was held in the Asheville City Auditorium (now known as Thomas Wolfe Auditorium) from 1948 to 1973, and Hayes’ wife, Leona Trantham Hayes (1913-1989) continued to direct the program after his death in 1964. Hubert Hayes was an author, playwright, and alumni of Duke University
The Philosophy of Life Reflected in The Poetry of Emily Jane Bronte and Christina Georgina Rossetti
The writer of this thesis became interested in the poetry of Christina Georgina Rossetti through the study of The Blessed Damozel,” a poem by her brother Dante Gabriel. After receiving some helpful suggestions from her adviser, the writer decided to make a rather thorough and careful study of Miss Rossetti\u27s poems. In the meantime, the adviser, Dr. Myrta E. McGinnis, head of the English Department, selected Dr. Clarice Short as director and guide for the study. Dr. Clarice Short suggested that the writer make an additional study of the poetry of Emily Jane Bronte to ascertain likenesses and unlikeness in the two poets, thereby making it a comparative study. After utilizing every available source in Forsyth Library to gain knowledge about the two poets and after a rapid reading of the poems of these two women, the writer decided upon making a comparative study of the religion or philosophy of life of Emily Jane Bronte and Christina Georgina Rossetti through the medium of their literary works. In pursuing this study, the author read practically all the poems of Emily Jane Bronte and Christina Georgina Rossetti. During a rapid reading of the poems, she selected for a more detailed and thorough study those poems of each poet which seemed to be pertinent to and illustrative of the proposed problem. As far as the writer could learn, there are not many graduate students who have written theses on these two poets. In consulting the lists of theses available in Forsyth Library, the author found that Miss Wilhelmina Rose Schreiner wrote a thesis in 1937 entitled : The Criticism of Emily Bronte, 11 and Miss Mary Louise McCluskey on Christina G. Rossetti: The Development of her Character and its Effect on her Poetry in 1941. Both of these studies were made at the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1931, Miss Eleanor Walter Thomas wrote a doctoral dissertation: Christina Rossetti at Columbia University

Abstract
Objective
To define the protective effect of ischemic preconditioning on cold ischemia and reperfusion injury associated with intestinal transplantation, and the role of nitric oxide in this process.
Summary Background Data
Ischemia/reperfusion injury continues to be a significant obstacle in small bowel transplantation. Preconditioning is a mechanism that protects against this injury.
Methods
To study the capacity of preconditioning to prevent cold ischemia-associated injury and the inflammatory response associated with intestinal transplantation, the authors studied a control group of animals, cold ischemia groups with or without previous preconditioning and with or without previous administration of L-NAME or NONOS, and intestinal transplantation groups with or without previous preconditioning and with or without previous administration of L-NAME or NONOS.
Results
Histologic findings and the release of lactate dehydrogenase into the preservation solution showed that preconditioning protects against cold ischemic preservation-associated injury. Preconditioning also prevented the inflammatory response associated with intestinal transplantation, measured by the above parameters and by neutrophil recruitment in the intestine. Inhibition of nitric oxide eliminates the protective effect.
Conclusions
Preconditioning protects the intestinal grafts from cold preservation and reperfusion injury in the rat intestinal transplantation model. Nitric oxide is involved in this protection.Peer reviewe
