Competing models of socially constructed economic man : differentiating Defoe's Crusoe from the Robinson of neoclassical economics

    No full text
Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe has seldom been read as an explicitly political text. When it has, it appears that the central character was designed to warn the early eighteenth-century reader against political challenges to the existing economic order. Insofar as Defoe’s Crusoe stands for "economic man", he is a reflection of historically-produced assumptions about the need for social conformity, not the embodiment of any genuinely essential economic characteristics. This insight is used to compare Defoe’s conception of economic man with that of the neoclassical Robinson Crusoe economy. On the most important of the ostensibly generic principles espoused by neoclassical theorists, their "Robinson" has no parallels with Defoe’s Crusoe. Despite the shared name, two quite distinct social constructions serve two equally distinct pedagogical purposes. Defoe’s Crusoe extols the virtues of passive middle-class sobriety for effective social organisation; the neoclassical Robinson champions the establishment of markets for the sake of productive efficiency

The Daughters of Utah Pioneers, Phillips Camp biographies (circa 1940-1974) is a collection of biographical sketches of Utah pioneers submitted to the Phillips Camp, Daughters of Utah Pioneers, in Kaysville, Utah. The individual sketches give insight into the socioeconomic status of European, as well New World, converts to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during the nineteenth century. They contain biographical and genealogical information, as well as descriptions of experiences crossing the Atlantic to America and traveling across the plains to Utah. Minute details of pioneering life in Davis County, Utah, and other frontier outposts of settlement are illuminated. Described also are individual occupations and survival techniques along with information on offices held in, and services to, the church and the community. FILOCTETES E ROBINSON CRUSOÉ: MITOS DE HERÓIS SOLITÁRIOS

    No full text

This paper is part of a broader research and seeks to understand critical assessments of artistic production and broader societal movements in the face of the catastrophe represented by the new coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. To that end, this essay reflects on the figuration of catastrophe and the strategies that humanity has forged (desired and executed) to deal with it in art and in criticism. The focus is on the pandemic that spread across the world in early 2020 and its impacts on the critical reflection by Kim Stanley Robinson, an American science fiction writer whose comments on the pandemic are analyzed here. The theoretical support of the discussion is based on the concept of structure of feeling, by Raymond Williams, as well as on his discussion of science fiction, drawing consequences from the perspective of Ailton Krenak’s indigenous epistemology as well, including data analysis from pandemic management around the world (such as the number of vaccines applied in different countries). This study considers that science fiction provides a privileged space for the elaboration of humanity’s fears and hopes in the face of catastrophe, with great potential for the production of knowledge.

Deception and Britain's road to war in Iraq

    No full text
Ever since the 2003 invasion of Iraq, there has been a widely shared public perception in the UK and beyond that the British government lied in making the case for war. One major theme has been the view that the Blair government lied about the strength of the intelligence about alleged Iraqi weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and the extent of the WMD capabilities claimed by that intelligence. A second theme that has received less attention has been the view that the Blair government lied in claiming that its actions at the United Nations (UN) were aimed at securing peaceful Iraqi compliance with its disarmament obligations. Instead, most think that the UK was actually committed to a policy of regime change by force and did not want the ‘UN route’ to produce a peaceful outcome. The article argues that the conceptual focus of the discussion needs to be broadened from lying to also considering deception by omission and deception by distortion as part of a campaign of organized political persuasion. It argues that, on the WMD intelligence, it is now apparent that a campaign of deceptive organized political persuasion was conducted by UK officials. With respect to the UN route, there is mounting evidence that the Blair government ran a campaign of deception on this issue as well to pave Britain’s road to war in Iraq

    Robinson's poetical characters.

In this thesis one will be given a brief introduction to the characters that appear in E. A. Robinson's poetry. The title of the examined study has been called "Robinson's Poetical Characters." An investigation of this nature is worthy of attention for two reasons (1) to show the author's importance as a poet; and (2) to show his power of portraying characters who live as indubitably as did the man who created them
