Edith Matilda Raymond
Edith and Wilmot Hope Raymond arrived in the Territory in April of 1892; Wilmot had employment with the Easter Extension Cable Company. Arthur Wilmot, their first child, was born in September 1893 and their second child was born during a visit to England. The family returned to the Territory in 1894. In 1895 Edith was one of the 82 Territory women who enrolled to vote after the franchise was granted to South Australian and Territory women in 1894. She registered to vote at Palmerston and her occupation was listed as 'married woman'. In January 1896 Edith gave birth to son Leonardo and daughter Dorothy was born in 1898. A year later the family sold all their possessions and sailed overseas on the Taiyuan.PioneerEnglis
Women and work in Egypt
This brief study of the role of women in the labor force of Egypt has occupied my time and attention, off and on, for about two years. While I alone am responsible for the final result, a number of people have helped reduce its deficiencies in one way or another and I owe each of them a special debt. Matilda Toma and Nadia Hanna each typed parts of the paper and Edith Dimond prepared the final manuscript for publication. Adel Labban helped in some of the early stages of data collection and Soha Abdel Kadar, Raymond Baker, Kareen Aboul Kheir and Barbara Ibrahim commented on an earlier version. Their observations were especially helpful, as were those of Nadia Abdel Naby. Nelly Effat and Amany El Khateeb who helped correct some of my misperceptions about the contemporary role of women in Egypt. But one individual served as my reseach assistant as I was finishing this paper and without her help I doubt it would have been completed. Maha Ghalwash was an indefatigable data gatherer and critic who helped improve the quality of this paper in a number of ways. Convention dictates that an author accept all responsibility for whatever inadequacies remain in a publication, while granting full credict to those whose criticism and assistance were helpful. Who am I to flaunt convention? Obviously, a foreign man writing a study of Egyptian women needs all the help he can get. In addition to those individuals mentioned above, I should like to thank the Editorial Board of Cairo Papers, numerous colleagues and students, and finally, the women (and men) of Egypt who made me believe that such research was worth doing.https://fount.aucegypt.edu/faculty_book_chapters/1852/thumbnail.jp
"different sentiments & different connections supports them" : sensibility, community, and diversity in British women's Romantic-period poetry
With diversity
as an overarching theme, women writers' responses to the
cultural
feminisation and developing social climate of
late eighteenth- and early
nineteenth-century Britain
are explored through analyses of their poems on
sensibility, community, and abolition.
To determine a
focus for
expressive criticism
and recover Romantic women writers
from the social and historical
contexts that have
previously succeeded in highlighting
male literary
achievements, women's poetry is
considered a distinct
contribution to Romanticism. This dissertation analyses poems
written
by Joanna Baillie, Anna Barbauld, Harriet
and Maria Falconar, Frances
Greensted, Frances Greville, Elizabeth Hands, Eliza Knipe, Isabella Lickbarrow,
Hannah More, Amelia Opie, Priscilla Pointon, Mary Robinson, Mary Scott, Helen
Maria Williams, Ann Yearsley, and Mary Julia Young.
Although literature brought together the public and private spheres, sensibility
mediated
between the two and served as a social currency
for
women.
The
various
applications of sensibility are apparent
in its dual-gendered nature,
its link
with
reason, and the significance of economic
language. A
new genre of the "Address to
Sensibility" was prominent
in the period and
followed
a
loose formula
which
defined
sensibility,
traced its
personal
impact,
and
determined
a
link between the Romantic
culture and
heightened
emotion.
Through
explorations of poems on
intellectual
coteries, patronage, creative
influence, Reviews, and
literary
critique,
it is
evident that women poets' affiliations
with the literary
community were marked
by
a
discomfort based on their literary
associations,
the anxiety about their public reception, and the social
differences in the
literary
community.
However, the development
of social,
intellectual, literary,
and
critical communities alleviated this discomfort
and contributed
to women's
participation
in literary
culture.
In
addition, women poets expressed sensibility and used images of community
in diverse ways in their works against slavery and the trade.
Abolitionist
poetry acts
as a case study of the particular motifs,
highlighted throughout, such as the
amalgamation of masculine and
feminine, the political and economic applications of
sensibility, the association of
feeling
with reason and community, and the assertion of
individuality
amidst commonality.
Women
poets' petitions
to alleviate the sufferings
of slaves paralleled arguments
for the improvement
of
British
society to benefit
women.
The poems discussed signify the complexity of the issues of sensibility,
community, and diversity

The life and works of Osbert of Clare
Osbert of Clare was an English monastic writer, whose works extended from
the mid-1120s to the mid-1150s. His Latin hagiography reflects a deep admiration for
Anglo-Saxon saints and spirituality, while his letters provide a personal perspective
on his turbulent career. As prior of Westminster Abbey, Osbert of Clare worked to
strengthen the rights and prestige of his monastery. His production of forged or
altered charters makes him one of England's most prolific medieval forgers. At times
his passion for reform put him at odds with his abbots, and he was sent into exile
under both Abbot Herbert (1121-c.1136) and Abbot Gervase (1138-c.1157). Also
Osbert, as one of the first proponents of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, wrote
about the feast, worked to legitimize its celebration, and provided us with the only
significant narration of its introduction to England.
This thesis is divided into two sections. The first section is principally
historical and the second is principally literary. In the first section, I provide an
overview of Osbert of Clare's career and examine in greater detail two of his most
significant undertaking: his promotion of Westminster Abbey and his attempted
canonization of Edward the Confessor. In the second section, I give a philological
study of Osbert Latin style and examine themes that nm throughout his writings, such
as virginity, exile and kingship. Osbert's promotion of the feast of the Immaculate
Conception is included in the second section of the thesis because of its ties to the
themes of virginity and femininity within his writings. There are also two appendices:
the first is a survey of the extant manuscripts of Osbert's writings, and the second is
an edition of Osbert's unpublished Life of St Ethelbert from Gotha,

The intimacy which is knowledge : female friendship in the novels of women writers
The thesis offers a historical account of the
representation of friendship in the novels of English
women writers from the nineteenth century to the
present. Questioning the prevalent understanding of the
history of women's friendship in terms of a single major
rupture, from nineteenth-century 'innocence' to
twentieth-century 'guilt', the thesis identifies
narrative configurations which recur throughout this,
period, and which define friendship as a formative
learning experience integrally related to the
acquisition of gendered identity. It concludes that
there can be no final and 'perfect' representation of
friendship, since the nature of the "knowledge' shared
has continually shifted in relation to changing
understandings of femininity.
Chapter 1 identifies the origins and nature of the
Victorian concept of the "second self", in which the
friend acts as the mirror of, and means of access to, an
idealised female subjectivity. Chapter 2 analyses the
ways in which this concept informs the narrative
patterns and rituals in Victorian fictions of
friendship. Chapter 3 offers a new reading of novels by
Elizabeth Gaskell, George Eliot and Charlotte Bronte, in
which the conventions identified in Chapter 2 are
adapted to question the existing boundaries of feminine
identity. Chapter 4 examines the impact of changes in
women's education upon the representation of friendship
in turn-of-the-century feminist and anti-feminist
novels, and in a new genre, the school story for girls.
Chapter 5 shows that the scientific construct of
lesbianism produced a new distinction between the
'healthy' and the 'unhealthy' relationship, but that the
terms of this distinction were contested; in
twentieth-century novels of the 'gyriaeceum', the
tradition continues, but is newly eroticised. Chapter 6
looks at friendship as 'revision' in recent English and
American novels, in which earlier configurations are
redeployed in the light of contemporary feminist concern
to recuperate and re-imagine the past
