    We sampled blood plasma of family’ groups (females, males and chicks) of Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) from Martillo Island, Argentina. We used stable isotope analyses on plasma samples to examine food provisioning, isotopic niche, trophic position and diet composition of penguins between the early and late chick-rearing period.     A telecoupling analysis for the Patagonian Shelf seascape: a suggested template on how to study the wider seabirds‐fisheries interactions worldwide for sustainability

    The Southwest Atlantic Ocean and the extended Patagonian shelf in particular, is a highly productive seascape. It is a very complex ecosystem of global relevance and maintains a great diversity and abundance of seabirds and marine mammals, too. Fisheries have been identified as a main stressor for the marine ecosystems and as the main cause of seabird population declines. Using the framework of telecoupling - the sophisticated natural and socioeconomic interactions over wider distances - we present a fresh look at the dynamic fisheries and (endangered) seabird interactions for the Patagonian Shelf seascape. We found that these waters are affected by many nations and players, inside and outside. Here we show how the input, output and spill-over of the Patagonian shelf ecosystem are distributed almost globally. In addition, we also show ?losers? (=nations that are left out entirely from this global resource and its governance). Our findings are based on best available public trade and harvest analysis for this region, linked with predictive modeling (machine learning and some open source geographic information systems GIS) for nine seabird species. We extend this analysis with a perspective from the financial sector and ethical banking policy that support the Patagonian fisheries as international investment projects. As increasingly recognized elsewhere, we believe that telecoupling can serve as a new but rather sophisticated study template for an improved more holistic conservation research on oceans and global sustainability questions.Fil: Raya Rey, Andrea Nélida.     Breeding experience and foraging behaviour of Imperial Shags (Leucocarbo atriceps) in Argentina

    Breeding success depends on efficient foraging behaviour by breeding individuals. However, foraging skills are acquired over time and foraging behaviour is expected to be optimised over the course of successive breeding events. In 2008, 32 Imperial Shags (Leucocarbo atriceps) breeding at the Punta León colony, Argentina, either with prior breeding experience (4 males and 9 females) or without (10 males, 9 females), were fitted with tracking devices to record one foraging trip during the early chick-rearing period. Birds did not differ in the maximum distance from the colony or duration of foraging trips, but males spent more time flying than females. Inexperienced individuals spent more time diving than experienced individuals, and inexperienced males in particular spent more time flying and performed more dives than other birds. Experienced males and females differed in the areas that they searched most intensively, and inexperienced males used different areas from experienced males. This study shows the importance of considering sex- and age-related differences when studying behavioural aspects, such as foraging patterns in seabirds.Fil: Harris, Sabrina.     Animals’ use of the space is the result of a complex decision-making process since the energetic efficiency while foraging is ultimately linked to individuals’ fitness and population dynamics. In penguins, foraging behavior is shaped by changes in the environment and, therefore, is a good indicator of the health of the southern oceans.     New records of South American sea lion Otaria flavescens predation on southern rockhopper penguins Eudyptes chrysocome at Staten Island, Argentina

    Predation by fur seals and sea lions has been identified, among others, as a potential cause of the declines in rockhopper penguin populations. Here, we report a multiple predation event of southern rockhopper penguins Eudyptes chrysocome by South American sub-adult male sea lions Otaria flavescens at Staten Island, Argentina. The sea lions attacked and preyed on penguins mostly using a wait and rush tactic at sea, but in some cases, penguins were also pursued on land. Although observations suggested that only a few sea lions are involved in predation, further research is necessary to elucidate the importance of this predation in the rate of population decline.Fil: Raya Rey, Andrea Nélida.     New Magellanic penguin Spheniscus magellanicus colony in a subantarctic island

    This paper provides data on a newly discovered colony of Magellanic penguins Spheniscus magellanicus in the southwest Atlantic Ocean. A new settlement was found while conducting southern rockhopper penguin Eudyptes chrysocome studies in the San Juan de Salvamento colony in Staten Island, Argentina. The colony holds 88 breeding pairs. While the origin of the founders was unknown, it is possible that they came from the nearby Observatorio Island colony located ~ 20 km away. New colonies allow populations to expand and establish in new areas, which could allow a species to respond to changes in climate.     Stable isotopes identify age- and sex-specific dietary partitioning and foraging habitat segregation in southern giant petrels breeding in Antarctica and southern Patagonia

    We examined the isotopic signatures (δ 13C, δ 15N) of adult body feathers from southern giant petrels Macronectes giganteus collected at two breeding colonies in Antarctica (Potter Peninsula and Cape Geddes) and one in southern Patagonia (Observatorio Island), as well as in whole blood collected from adults of both sexes at each Antarctic colonies and from chicks at Potter Peninsula. As body feather moult is a continuous process in giant petrels, feathers provide an integrated annual signal of an adult's diets and foraging habitats. In contrast, the stable isotope values of adult and chick blood are reflective of their diets during the breeding season. We found that sex-specific dietary segregation in adults breeding in Antarctica was notable during the breeding season (blood samples) but absent when examined across the entire year (feather samples). In addition, blood stable isotope values differed between chicks and adults, indicating that adults provision their offspring with a relatively higher amount of penguin and seal prey that what they consume themselves. This finding confirms previous work that suggests that chicks are preferentially fed with prey of presumably higher nutritional value such as carrion. Finally, based on isotopic differences between major oceanographic zones in the Southern Ocean, our data indicate population-specific differences in foraging distribution, with Antarctic populations move seasonally between Antarctic and subantarctic zones, while Patagonian populations likely forage in subtropical waters and in continental shelf habitats year-round.Fil: Raya Rey, Andrea Nélida.
