Perceived Credibility in News Depending on Author Race & Statistical Evidence
This 2x2 between-subjects experiment investigated the impact of the race of the reporter and statistical evidence upon perceived credibility. This study was run at a small midwestern university with 65 participants (60% female and 40% male) that had an average age of 19.26 years. These participants were asked to read a news article in an online format, answer a few short-answer questions over the content of the article, take a quick survey, answer a set of multiple choice questions about the content, and complete a demographic survey. The survey that the participants completed was adapted from a credibility scale utilized by Gaziano and McGrath (1986) and measured credibility on a five-point likert scale. It has been hypothesized that articles with more statistical evidence present will lead to higher ratings of credibility in relation to the report and a white male author will lead to higher ratings of credibility in relation to the article. Finally, an interaction was also hypothesized between the race of the author and the statistical evidence present in the article such that when there is a presence of statistical evidence, the credibility ratings of the black and white male authors will not show a statistical difference. Whereas, without the presence of statistical evidence, the black male author will lead to significantly lower ratings in credibility in comparison to the white male author. A 2x2 between-subjects ANOVA indicated no significant results (p \u3e .05) suggesting that neither race or statistical evidence has a significant impact upon credibility
Differential gene expression of γ-actin, Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR-2) and interleukin-1 receptor-associated kinase 4 (IRAK-4) in Mya arenaria haemocytes induced by in vivo infections with two Vibrio splendidus strains
Immune function gene expression in Mya arenaria haemocytes was evaluated following in vivo infection with Vibrio splendidus LGP32-GFP and 7SHRW. Elongation factor 1α (EF-1α) with 2 (EF-2), after challenge with LGP32-GFP, and EF-1α with the ribosomal protein S-18, after challenge with 7SHRW, were found to be the most stable housekeeping genes. Using these internal controls and comparing the regulation induced by both strains, up-regulation of γ-actin, down-regulation of TLR-2 and up-regulation of IRAK-4 was significantly higher after challenge with LGP32-GFP (p<0.001, p=0.001 and p<0.05, respectively). These results suggest specific responses at a molecular level modulated by the bacterial strains. LGP32-GFP induced marked responses which coincide with a similar trend previously found on phenotypic responses under our experimental model
Changes induced by two strains of Vibrio splendidus in haemocyte subpopulations of Mya arenaria, detected by flow cytometry with LysoTracker
Flow-cytometric characterisation of bivalve haemocytes is usually performed by light-scatter profiles based on size and complexity of the cells. Additional means of characterisation such as specific fluorescent dyes are not commonly used to discriminate cell subpopulations in challenged and unchallenged haemocytes. In the present study, we characterise the changes in haemocyte subpopulations of soft-shell clam Mya arenaria induced by in vivo challenge with 2 strains of Vibrio splendidus by using a fluorescent probe. Responses were measured 24 h after infection with either a local wild strain (7SHRW) or a modification (LGP32-GFP) of a strain associated with oyster mortalities in France (LGP32). Changes in haemocyte subpopulations were analysed using flow cytometry based on 2-parameter scatter profiles and lysosomal content reflected by LysoTracker staining. Forward and side-scatter profiles revealed 2 haemocyte subpopulations: hyalinocytes and granulocytes. Granulocytes exhibited significantly higher levels of lysosomal staining (p<0.01). Following infection with LGP32-GFP, both subpopulations merged into a single continuous group and their lysosomal content significantly decreased (p<0.05). Independent modifications after infection were observed in the proportions of subpopulations established by their lysosomal content. While the subpopulation of hyalinocytes had lower levels of lysosomal content after infection, especially with LGP32-GFP (p<0.001), the subpopulation of granulocytes had similar levels of lysosomes after infection with 7SHRW and significantly decreased levels after infection with LGP32-GFP (p=0.001). Black Author Representation in Environmental Curricula at Three California State Universities
Environmental studies and science programs play a crucial role in training future leaders to address environmental challenges and develop sustainable solutions. However, Black perspectives are notably absent in environmental education, with low representation among students and faculty, as well as limited integration of Black voices into the curriculum. This thesis examines the extent to which environmental studies and science courses taught at California State Universities incorporate Black voices in their curriculum. In this study, the researcher collected 383 syllabi from environmental studies and science departments at San José State University, San Francisco State University, and California State University East Bay from department online archives and through direct contact with department analysts. The readings listed in these syllabi were analyzed to determine to what extent Black voices are integrated in the environmental studies and science curriculum at these three universities. Reading material considered included academic publications, online content, and gray literature such as dissertations, surveys, and newsletters. Audio-visual media and government reports were excluded from this study. Author racial identity was determined through photographs, videos, biographies, company websites, and positionality statements. This analysis reveals that only 10% of environmental studies and science syllabi examined in this study referenced Black authors. This research concludes by providing recommendations for environmental studies and science faculty interested in decolonizing their syllabi and increasing the visibility of Black voices in environmental education
Functional mechanism study of the allelochemical myrigalone A identifies a group of ultrapotent inhibitors of ethylene biosynthesis in plants.
[EN] Allelochemicals represent a class of natural products released by plants as root, leaf, and fruit exudates that interfere with the growth and survival of neighboring plants. Understanding how allelochemicals function to regulate plant responses may provide valuable new approaches to better control plant function. One such allelochemical, Myrigalone A (MyA) produced by Myrica gale , inhibits seed germination and seedling growth through an unknown mechanism. Here, we investigate MyA using the tractable model Dictyostelium discoideum and reveal that its activity depends on the conserved homolog of the plant ethylene synthesis protein 1aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid oxidase (ACO). Furthermore, in silico modeling predicts the direct binding of MyA to ACO within the catalytic pocket. In D . discoideum , ablation of ACO mimics the MyA-dependent developmental delay, which is partially restored by exogenous ethylene, and MyA reduces ethylene production. In Arabidopsis thaliana , MyA treatment delays seed germination, and this effect is rescued by exogenous ethylene. It also mimics the effect of established ACO inhibitors on root and hypocotyl extension, blocks ethylenedependent root hair production, and reduces ethylene production. Finally, in silico binding analyses identify a range of highly potent ethylene inhibitors that block ethylene -dependent response and reduce ethylene production in Arabidopsis . Thus, we demonstrate a molecular mechanism by which the allelochemical MyA reduces ethylene biosynthesis and identify a range of ultrapotent inhibitors of ethylene -regulated responses.G.H.H. was supported by a PhD studentship funded by BBSRC DTP iCASE in collaboration with Syngenta Ltd. The evolution, structure and function of the ray finned fish (Actinopterygii) glucocorticoid receptors
Basal ray-finned fish (Actinopterygii) possess a single glucocorticoid receptor (GR) and when compared to the lobe-finned vertebrate (Sarcoptergyii) GR possess nine additional amino acids between the zinc-finger of the DNA binding domain. A whole genome duplication event which occurred between 320-350 MYA in the teleost lineage following the split from the basal ray-finned fish resulted in 2 GRs: one GR group, GR1, has retained the 9 amino acids insert whereas the other group, GR2, has not. The exception to this is the zebrafish, that have lost one of the GRs, but they do possess 2 GRs with a splice variant that lacks the C-terminal portion of the GR to form GRβ which acts as a dominant-repressor of the wildtype GR. Another splice variant sees the basal ray-finned GR and teleost GR1 without the 9 amino acids insert. The molecular basis for GRs retention is beginning to be unravelled. In Pantadon buchholzi, rainbow trout, carp, marine and Japanese medaka GR2 is more sensitive to glucocorticoids (GC), thus potentially playing a more significant role in regulating gene expression at basal circulatory GC concentrations. However, this division in GC sensitivity is not seen in other species. The few studies to evaluate the significance of the 9 amino acid insert have shown that it affect maximal transactivational activity the extent to which is dependent on the number of glucocorticoid response elements (GREs) present in the reporter plasmid. The retention of these GRs would suggest there was an evolutionary advantage, which saw the development of a complex regulatory process to mediate the actions of the glucocorticoids
Design and maintenance of a closed artificial seawater system for long-term holding of bivalve shellfish
To study the potential for transmission of Perkinsus karlssoni, an apicomplexan parasite, among bivalve hosts, a long-term laboratory-scale, closed, artificial seawater system for shellfish was designed. Species of shellfish utilised were as follows: bay scallops, Argopecten irradians; blue mussels, Mytilus edulis; eastern oysters, Crassostrea virginica; European oysters, Ostrea edulis; sea scallops, Placopecten megallanicus; softshell clams, Mya arenaria; and quahaugs, Mercenaria mercenaria. All shellfish used were juveniles with shell heights of 10-25 mm. The design was duplicated for control and experimental systems with a combined population of 1600 individual shellfish. The maximum biomass in each system was estimated at < 1 kg/m super(3). Each system included six, 400 litre rectangular fibreglass tanks, a modular pump and filter unit (particle and activated carbon filters and ultra-violet sterilisers), a biological filter and a refrigeration unit. The total volume of water for each system was 2300 litres of artificial seawater (Instant Ocean super(")). The mean water temperature of 22 degree C was achieved by thermostat-controlled room temperature. Salinity was maintained between 27 and 31 ppt by addition of either freshwater or artificial seawater. Shellfish were fed daily a mixed diet of carboy-cultured algae and spray-dried algae. Mean values for water quality parameters in both systems were as follows: NH sub(3) < 0.004 mg/litre; NO sub(2) super(-) < 0.01 mg/litre; NO sub(3) super(-) < 19-16 mg/litre; and pH 8.0-8.4. The system design was adequate in maintaining healthy bivalves for a period of 22 months, with the exception of the sea scallops which succumbed to warm water. Mean monthly shellfish survival rates were 79.9-100% in the control and 74.8-98.9% in the experimental system. A method of controlling water temperature other than via room temperature should reduce slight seasonal temperature fluctuations

Phylogenetic relationships and estimation of divergence times among Sisoridae catfishes
Nineteen taxa representing 10 genera of Sisoridae were subjected to phylogenetic analyses of sequence data for the nuclear genes Plagl2 and ADNP and the mitochondrial gene cytochrome . The three data sets were analyzed separately and combined into a single data set to reconstruct phylogenetic relationships among Chinese sisorids. Both Chinese Sisoridae as a whole and the glyptosternoid taxa formed monophyletic groups. The genus is likely to be the earliest diverging extant genus among the Chinese Sisoridae. The four species included in the study formed a monophyletic group. was indicated to be earliest diverging glyptosternoid, followed by and . Our data supported the conclusion that and both formed a monophyletic group. On the basis of the fossil record and the results of a molecular dating analysis, we estimated that the Sisoridae diverged in the late Miocene about 12.2 Mya. The glyptosternoid clade was indicated to have diverged, also in the late Miocene, about 10.7 Mya, and the more specialized glyptosternoid genera, such as , originated in the Pleistocene (within 1.9 Mya).
