Fire Management on Container Ships. New Strategies and Technologies

    No full text
Design and construction of container ships follow consolidated requirements, with standard consideration of fire management. Indeed, cargo fires can have important consequence on crewmembers and cargoes, as well as impacting coastal zone and marine environment. Innovative strategies include prevention of events and mitigation of consequences. Digital solutions, providing with situational pictures onboard and around the vessel are fundamental for new fire management solutions, seamless and integrated in o the vessel IT infrastructure, according to IMO regulations and the recent EMSA CARGOSAFE Report. The assessment of these solutions requires theoretical evaluation, validation activities in simulated environment and demonstration activities in real environments, with use cases to prove feasibility and benefits. This paper, after a review of traditional preventing and mitigating solutions against fire and an analysis of container ships fires, proposes applicable innovative technologies and operational measures, emerging problems for their potential implementation and requirements for virtual and real tests design

Natural Variation of the Circadian Clock in Neurospora

    No full text
Most living organisms on earth experience daily and expected changes from the rotation of the earth. For an organism, the ability to predict and prepare for incoming stresses or resources is a very important skill for survival. This cellular process of measuring daily time of the day is collectively called the circadian clock. Because of its fundamental role in survival in nature, there is a great interest in studying the natural variation of the circadian clock. However, characterizing the genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying natural variation of circadian clocks remains a challenging task. In this chapter, we will summarize the progress in studying natural variation of the circadian clock in the successful eukaryotic model Neurospora, which led to discovering many design principles of the molecular mechanisms of the eukaryotic circadian clock. Despite the success of the system in revealing the molecular mechanisms of the circadian clock, Neurospora has not been utilized to extensively study natural variation. We will review the challenges that hindered the natural variation studies in Neurospora, and how they were overcome. We will also review the advantages of Neurospora for natural variation studies. Since Neurospora is the model fungal species for circadian study, it represents over 5 million species of fungi on earth. These fungi play important roles in ecosystems on earth, and as such Neurospora could serve as an important model for understanding the ecological role of natural variation in fungal circadian clocks.Advances in Genetics, Vol. 99

On some variations of two-way probabilistic finite automata models

AbstractRabin [M. Rabin, Probabilistic finite automata, Information and Control (1963) 230–245] initiated the study of probabilistic finite automata (pfa). Rabin’s work showed a crucial role of the gap in the error bound (for accepting and non-accepting computations) in the power of the model. Further work resulted in the identification of qualitatively different error models (one-sided error, bounded and unbounded errors, no error etc.) Karpinski and Verbeek [M. Karpinski, R. Verbeek, There is no polynomial deterministic simulation of probabilistic space with two-way random-tape generator, Information and Control 67 (1985) 158–162] and Nisan [N. Nisan, On read-once vs. multiple access to randomness in logspace, in: Proc. of Fifth IEEE Structure in Complexity Theory, Barcelona, Spain, 1990, pp. 179–184] studied a model of probabilistic automaton in which the tape containing random bits can be read by a two-way head. They presented results comparing models with one-way vs. two-way access to randomness. Dwork and Stockmeyer [C. Dwork, L. Stockmeyer, Interactive proof systems with finite state verifiers, IBM Report RJ 6262, 1988] and Condon et al. [A. Condon, et al., On the power of finite automata with both nondeterministic and probabilistic states, SIAM Journal on Computing (1998) 739–762] studied a model of 2-pfa with nondeterministic states (2-npfa). In this paper, we present some results about the above mentioned variations of probabilistic finite automata, as well as a model of 2-pfa augmented with a pebble studied in [B. Ravikumar, Some observations on two-way probabilistic finite automata, in: Proc. of the Foundations of Software Technology and Theoretical Computer Science, 1992, pp. 392–403]. Our observations indicate that these models exhibit subtle variations in their computational power. We also mention many open problems about these models. Complete characterizations of their power will likely provide deeper insights about the role of randomness in space-bounded computations

    Herida de bala de aorta

    No full text
The author presents the case of a 16-year old girl with a bullet wound in the abdominal aorta, operated under shock with two perfusions of rapid onset. Linen suture was performed and recuperation followed without sequella. This seems to be the first case published in Uruguay of survival of aortic wounds.

Dynamics of Network Formation Processes in the Co-Author Model

    No full text
This article studies the dynamics in the formation processes of a mutual consent network in game theory setting: the Co-Author Model. In this article, a limited observation is applied and analytical results are derived. Then, 2 parameters are varied: the number of individuals in the network and the initial probability of the links in the network in its initial state. A simulation result shows a finding that is consistent with an analytical result for a state of equilibrium while it also shows different possible equilibria.Dynamics, Network, Game Theory, Model,Simulation, Equilibrium, Complexity

Solar powered charge stations for electric vehicles

    No full text
Every hour, the sun emits more energy onto the Earth’s surface than our entire world population uses in one year. [1] Solar power provides us with the possibility of a cleaner and more renewable future. Global climate change as a result of greenhouse gases and the effects of low air quality caused by pollutants have become very substantial issues in our world today. The costs associated with greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions, and the effect they have on human lives and human health, are major and growing concerns. The development and installation of solar powered charging stations will reduce the amount of greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere, future costs associated with climate change, and health issues. Thus, there is environmental, social, and economic value associated with the installation of solar powered charge stations. Solar powered charging stations have the potential of significantly reducing air pollutants and improving urban air quality. The electrification of transportation and the use of solar powered charging stations as an electricity source will improve people’s quality of life
