DEVELOPMENT OF VORTEX GENERATORS TO ENHANCE THE AERODYNAMIC EFFICIENCY OF A FORMULA 4 CAR

Aerodynamic development plays a vital role in race car performance. With the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and track testing, this project aims to develop a series of different vortex generator (VG) designs for use on an MSVR Formula 4 car. A systematic design process is followed to analyse the aerodynamic flow characteristics associated with each vortex generator design. Fitted to the suction side of the front wing flap, each VG design is tested in CFD over a wide range of flap angles. Validation studies using both track testing and a wind tunnel experiment is carried out to confirm the accuracy of the results. Flow visualisation techniques are used to outline the physical characteristics of each VG and show that all VGs contribute to a large increase in aerodynamic performance by suppressing flow separation. A maximum downforce increase of 84N is achieved with only 4N in drag by increasing the stalling angle of the front wing flap from 36°-45°. Device spacing is analysed along with height and length to find an optimal VG device. Configurations such as co-rotating and counter-rotating are tested and show that the co-rotating VG results in a much earlier vortex breakdown than other designs at around 65% chord, compared to a vortex breakdown of 95% chord observed with the counter-rotating configuration. The designs studied in this project suggest that a small sub-layer VG design in counter-rotating reversed configuration provides the greatest level of separation control

Multi-storey block details: four 16-storey blocks containing 490 dwellings; Multi-storey block name(s): Ratcliffe Towers; Mottram Towers; Millbrook Towers; Lincoln Towers; Image detail: View of Ratcliffe Towers with Millbrook Towers behind Original Commissioning Authority: Stockport County Borough Council; Image taken: 1987;Context: Tower Block UK is a project supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, bringing together public engagement and an openly-licensed image archive in an attempt to emphasise the social and architectural importance of tower blocks, and to frame multi-storey social housing as a coherent and accessible nationwide heritage. The Tower Block UK image archive is a searchable database of around 4,000 images of every multi-storey social housing development built in the UK. The photographs were largely taken in the 1980s by Miles Glendinning and are made available here for public use. As many of the blocks documented and photographed have since been demolished, the archive functions in part as a repository of information on an important aspect of UK heritage that is now vanishing. The archive itself catalogues multi-storey blocks as part of the developments within which they were initially commissioned and built. It gives details of notable dates, such as when local authorities approved the developments and when construction began or finished. Alongside this, the archive provides information on the local authorities, architects, and other agents involved in the processes of commissioning, designing, and constructing mass social housing. While the most historically 'accurate' identification labels in the database are the original overall development or project names, the archive also contains details of the individual blocks built
