    No full text
By applying a hexagon-diamond search (HDS) method to an ultrasound image, the path of an object is able to be monitored by extracting images into macro-blocks, thereby achieving image redundancy is reduced from one frame to another, and also ascertaining the motion vector within the parameters searched. The HDS algorithm uses six search points to form the six sides of the hexagon pattern, a centre point, and a further four search points to create diamond pattern within the hexagon that clarifies the focus of the subject area

Performance Analysis of Hexagon-Diamond Search Algorithm for Motion Estimation using MATLAB

    Get PDF
To achieve a high compression ratio in coding video data, a method known as Motion Estimation (ME) is often applied to reduce the temporal redundancy between successive frames of a video sequence. One of ME techniques, known as Block Matching Algorithm (BMA), has been widely used in various video coding standards. In recent years, many of these BMAs have been developed with similar intention of reducing the computational costs while at the same time maintaining the video signal quality. In this paper, an algorithm called Hexagon-Diamond Search (HDS) is proposed for ME where the algorithm and several fast BMAs, namely Three Step Search (TSS), New Three Step Search (NTSS), Four Step Search (4SS) as well as Diamond Search (DS), are first selected to be implemented onto various type of standard test video sequence using MATLAB before their performances are compared and analyzed in terms of peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), number of search points needed as well as their computational complexity. Simulation results demonstrate that HDS algorithm has speed up other algorithm’s computational work up to 56% while at the same time maintains close performance in terms of PSNR to others

Off-Grid System Development for House Car Pouch Lighting

Practically to electrify lighting system electricity supply is a necessity to power the light. Thus, solar energy is known as an alternative source to provide electricity. This paper presents an off-grid system development for house car porch lighting system. Development of the system is composed of photovoltaic panel, environmental sensors, charge controller, battery and lighting loads such as florescent lamp. The off-grid system focuses to supply electricity in small scale which is integrated with some energy saving characteristics. An auto timer and smart charge controller is integrated into the off-grid system to turn-on and turn-off the lighting at the house car pouch. Integration of some smart functions is an ideal solution for small scale electricity supply or particularly for location which cannot be accessed by grid supply

This paper presents the development of a knowledge-based features recognition system for mechanical parts. The main aim of the research is to concentrate on recognition of rotational features, namely, blind hole, through hole and slanting hole to be used in automatic process planning system. The rule-based technique applied to recognise rotational features. The recognition criteria are based upon geometrical data from STandard for Exchange of Product data file (STEP) of computer-aided design (CAD) system. The system consists of several modules, namely, pre-processing module, inference engine module and user interface module. The developed system succeed the design activities in manufacturing industries

Water Pressure Loss Analysis of Mobile Machine for Fire Fighting Purpose

Fire fighting is risky profession. They are not only extinguishing fires in tall buildings but also must drag heavy hoses, climb high ladders and carry people from buildings and other situations. There are many fire fighters lost their lives in the line of duty each year throughout the world. The statistics of the fire fighter fatalities are still maintain at high level every year and it may continue to increase if there is no improvement in fire fighting techniques and technology. The paper describes the water pressure loss analysis of mobile fire fighting machine prototype

Accreditation Engineering Scenario and Future of Engineering Education in Malaysia

Engineering education in Malaysia is a strong and vibrant enterprise. Malaysia government is projecting to produce 222,000 engineering graduates in the next 9 years. This number of engineers is needed to ensure the development industries, infrastructures and general well-being of Malaysia are carried out as planned. However, since Malaysia has engineers in various fields, engineers have provided the driving forces behind high technology services and products to enhance the Malaysia economy growth locally and internationally. It is also cited that there are 33 accredited engineering programmes in Malaysia universities and colleges. Engineering degree is the common degree entry to the engineering profession nowadays, such as civil engineering, electrical engineering, electronics engineering and mechanical engineering. The Malaysia engineering degree requires a completion of four years full time study. For an engineering degree programme to be recognize, all the engineering degrees in Malaysia are governed by Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC). EAC ensure all the engineering degree programmes that are offered by Malaysian universities are subjected to the minimum academic requirements for registration as a graduate engineer with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM). BEM is representing Malaysia in Washington Accord since 2009, engineering education in Malaysia took on a broader international aspect and agreed to achieve equivalent standard with the other 14 signatories’ countries. Due to the upcoming challenges of the future, it is ideated that Malaysia engineers must progress working hard with all the necessary technical competencies in engineering science. This role is very important so that they will be flexible enough to be involved in multidisciplinary engineering tasks in Malaysia and around the world. Globalization is a trend that affects humanities, cultures, traditions and history of a country. Globalisation is defined as “the flow of people, culture, ideas, values, knowledge, technology, and economy across borders facilitating a more interconnected and interdependent world”. Engineering graduates are facing fierce challenges and competition not only locally but also internationally. Due to the global challenges and competition, local engineering graduates need to equip themselves with flexibility, ethics, professionalism, knowledge and skill in facing the global challenges. Government, educational institutions and industry plays an important role to upgrade the quality of local engineering education. The modern engineering profession deals constantly with uncertainty, incomplete data and competing (often conflicting) demands from clients, governments, environmental groups and the public. It requires technical competent and professionalism skill, as well as to be exposed to the global scenarios, current trend and future requirements. Whilst trying to incorporate more “humanity” skill into their knowledge base and professional practice, today’s engineers must also cope with continual technological and organizational changes in the workplace. In addition they must cope with the commercial realities of industrial practice in the modern world, as well as the legal consequences of every professional decision they make. The challenge for engineering education in Malaysia is to improve the current engineering education system so that the Malaysia engineering graduates are recognized internationally. Nevertheless, engineering education in Malaysia is constantly reviewed together with the professional members from the industries and education departmental. This study is expected to provide the current scenario of engineering education which later will foresee effect and the future design of accreditated engineering curriculum in Malaysia. This aim of this paper is to describe the modelled current scenario of accreditated engineering education and the accreditation process on future engineering education in Malaysia

The ability of utilize free resources of energy to generate electricity is one of the major tasks for environmentally research engineers. Numerous researches have been conducted to convert sunlight to direct current through Photovoltaic (PV) system. Nowadays PV research has become a popular study and has gained attention of many engineers and researchers due to free application, improving efficiency and high reliable energy source availability and is predicted to grow in years to come. With understanding of the aforementioned importance, PV systems aim to satisfy the growing demand for sustainable energy. This paper proposes a model of a real time grid assisted from low power direct current to high power alternating current as a solar educational training kit for an early education process to understand about the sustainability of energy conversion process. Integrating the switching concept, grid connection will only be switched on if the stored energy in the battery is insufficient to energize or supply the training kit. Programmable Integrated Circuit (PIC) is integrated into the educational training kit to enable it to display and indicates the battery voltage level as it also take part in switching between the battery and grid. In the nutshell, a simple and user friendly measurement training kit is intentionally designed for user’s handwork purposes
